Not sure if anyone cares-

My wife's laptop's screen finally gave out. We got her a new one last night. I seized her old laptop and turned it into a low powered media server. I attached it to another monitor and set up media center to run with my 360. I set up remote desktop so I can set it to download torrents, move around files, etc. I attached my 650 GB external to it and installed TVersity for ultimate compatibility with everything.

Good idea. I just bought a mint condition Gateway tablet pc to replace the old Dell LS400 that I use as a GPS unit with a usb gps device. The tablet pc has twice the processor and twice the memory.

I was wondering what to do with the old Dell laptop. It would be perfect for torrents since my NAS won't do torrents. The laptop only has a 40 gig hard drive but hopefully I can just send the files over to the NAS

Thanks for the idea.

Old laptops are great. I've used them as print servers, storage servers, Exchange servers, IIS servers, Apache servers, OWA servers, game servers...

Have you experience any heat issues? I don't expect any but i will monitor it.

Depends on the laptop. I was running an old Dell D600, ran fairly cool. Other than a HDD that died, it worked fine.

I'm using an HP dv5000. So far so good. It has the rear bump due to a large battery so it lifts it off the table. Plus the back room we keep it in stays a lot cooler than the rest of the house.

Hi,

Anyone got Torrent to work on NAS/SATA ??

1) Torrent download?
2) Backup setup?

When I place a torrent file in the associated directory, it disappears.

Anyone can explain this how to make it works will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I clears out the actual .torrent file right away but starts the process. I've noticed it can take a few mins to start up the download though.

Just go to the IP of the NAS with port 4080. Example 192.168.1.100:4080 to view the progress.

So I was able to get one of the IDE ones. Not bad, it works fine hooked up to my router thats acting as a bridge out in the living room. I'm not expecting this to work with the WD player but I'll give it a shot anyway.

You don't spend much time here, do you? This is typically what happens on these forums, and it's a natural progression. You discuss the hot deal, and once everyone receives their item, they talk about how they like it/what they can do with it/how they can improve it/etc. There's no point in moving the thread.

I just picked up a VOX N1 SATA NAS drive (gigabit) for $25 on Geeks. You just need to check the website periodically.

I have the SATA version from Geeks.

Anyone have a sure fire way to get the thing to act as a Print Server.

I am out of ideas.

Plug in a printer, make sure the print server function is enabled, and connect to \\whateveryounamedyourNAS\lp0, install appropriate driver, done.

Thanks but did that. I get a Bidirectional must be enabled error when its enabled. I can send a print also but nothing happens. Tried on and off. Tried rebooting. Update the firmware.

Any other ideas?

I don't have a 360 to try it on but streams fine to my PS3.

Did you have to do anything extra to get it to stream to the PS3?

I have the IDE version and I enabled uPNP on my router and updated the printer/uPNP extension on the landisk. But the PS3 cannot find any media servers besides my laptop and desktop.

How do I get it to work with PS3? PS3 is showing UPnP enabled and Nat Type 2.

Also... anybody find updated firmware for the IDE version???

Has anyone discovered a way to enable directory browsing on the SATA NAS?

It comes in handy when I want to quickly access hidden shares on my webserver...
