HIDIYO!

Iam not very familiar with this new technology, SATA150 ...

I want to build a new machine with two Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB HD - Serial ATA (SATA150) and maybe the Intel i865G Chipset, 400/533/800 FSB, ATA100 & Serial ATA (SATA150).

- Is SATA150 good ?
- Is it working well ?
- Is it tough to install WindowsXP on new SATA150 hard disks ?

Thanks !

Look at any of the articles in the Anandtech or TomsHardware storage sections. Read The Friendly Article then ask questions.

ed - or just trust SocrPlyr he wasn't lying to you.

- Is SATA150 good ?
As was said, no better than ATA100 really at this point. In time, it will be better and faster. The only real benefit at this time is the thinner cable. The future is SATA though, so go for it. It's just not some miracle in terms of speed at this point.
- Is it working well ?
Sure, it works fine.
- Is it tough to install WindowsXP on new SATA150 hard disks ?
No. Just remember to press F6 when instructed during your WIndows install, as you will need to install SATA drivers.

LOL, how bout SATA150 is to the autobahn like a 7200rpm drive is to a pinto. Just cuz the highway is large doesnt mean that the car can take advantage of it.

What?

Right now SATA doesn't offer any more than increased maximum RAID speeds (READ: burst rates) and smaller cables.

Just like ata-133 it is limited to the PCI bus speed right now....which already has traffic on it from your other peripherals, when PCI-x becomes more mainstream you will start to see the capabilities of both ata-133 and more importantly sata150 shine through.

i think....

With current drive technology the max speed thru put is about 50MB/Sec well under the P-ATA 133 Max or S-ATA 150Max

Hard drives are reaching the physical limits with the current speed. (7200RPM) there are really only two options left for EIDE drives, first is increase the RPM as in Western Digitals Raptor, or include more arms (read/write heads)

The latter is much more difficult to do because of the ballet that has to be orchestrated in order to get the head working together. The other option is much easier to do because you are just upping the speed, but the problem is that if you have a 3in platter spinning at 7200rpm that mean the edge of the platter is moving fast.

3 inches diameter = 7.06 inches circumference, 50,884 inches a minute at 7200RPM = 4240 feet a minute, = 0.80 miles a minute = 48 miles per hour

3 inches diameter = 7.06 inches circumference, 70,600 inches a minute at 10,000RPM = 5883 feet a minute, = 1.11 miles a minute = 66.8 miles per hour

As the platter moves faster then the drive will heat up more, and the platter has to be strengthened.

ICH5 is NOT limited by PCI bus speed

Yeah as far as I understood it, we are beginning to push the limits of ATA66 in burst transfers...ATA100, ATA133 and SATA150 are all overkill at the moment.

Yes. Though only Raptors are faster then the best ATA100/133 drives. (Actually Raptor is even faster then most SCSI drives).
- Is it working well ?
As well as any other drive interface.
- Is it tough to install WindowsXP on new SATA150 hard disks ?
As easy or prehaps slightly easier then any other HD.

I would suggest the canterwood motherboard with Intels ICHR5 sata controller, it dosen't tax the PCI slot like the regular sata drives.
You'll get better performance with it.
My Gigabyte GA-8nxkp has a silicon sata 2 ports and 2 Intel sata ports for 4 ports total, plus IDE Raid and regugular IDE ports.
So I can hook up 12 Hard drives if I choose with the option of going either way on the sata drives.
I currently run 2 Raptor satas on the Intel ICHR5 sata controller and it's lightning fast.
I use a 128 stripe and score 112,000 on the Atto benchmark with the raptors
