Im currently embarking on having a play around with satellite internet access and have ordered a Europe Online pack with the Skystar 2 PCI card and 3 months subscription.
Ive also ordered a 60cm satellite dish and the required LMB but am a bit unsure what kind of cable/connectors i will need to hook this lot up.
If someone can can offer me some advice on what i need to hook this lot together it would be much appreciated.
Ive looked all over but am unable to find any articles that go through the ins and outs of putting this lot together - in particular how to make up the cable.
Im also thinking of trying IPviasat at some point - have any of you guys any experience with this service in Europe? Any good?

Thanx,

rockhard =)

In the US satellite internet (and television) systems use coax cables. I cant remember the different categories, but I know the # for satellite tv/internet setups is 6. Not 5. Not 59, but 6. Its important

I hope you dont want to play games and dont get a lot of rain/snow...

Thanx for the info on the cable as i wasnt sure as to which i would need.
Also i was wondering what kind of connectors will i need?

No gaming for this setup as its just for file fetching and browsing.
Ive been reading about this multicasting file sharing that runs @ up to 2Mbps!
Its more of a new toy interest than anything and i will still have my ISDN for gaming as the satellite is only downsteam. Upstream going to be by 64k ISDN.

Ive been waiting so long for ADSL but from what ive been hearing recently here in the UK were on a hiding to nothing. BT appear to be scaling back on their exchange upgrading in favour of developing business in their current enabled exchanges with self install mullarky.
Our government should be ashamed letting things lag like this.

Remember the information I am giving you is for DirecPC in the US, so it may not be correct for you.

I dont know what kind of connectors you will need. In the US DirecPC customers just used the usual coax connectors, nothing special (no clue what they are called ).

Ive found that i need RG6 coax cable with F type connectors which is cool - should be easy enough to get rigged up
Im really looking forward to playing with my new toy
Ive just about finished putting together my cache server so i can keep a cache of all the pushed multicast downloads which ive been told can add up to 30 odd gigabytes a day! Going to just leave it on 24/7 permanently d'loading. Should end up with a good collection of goodies after a few weeks all being well once ive got it all sussed out.
I was planning on cacheing for a week before refreshing on a few large HD's so that i can nosey on through all the goodies at my leisure.
Be interesting to see what turns up on the cache.

Just be careful. If the company that gives you that access is anything like Hughes (the US company that owns DirecPC) you will have plenty of problems. FAP (Fair Access Policy) for one, and they stopped carrying the binary newsgroups. Good luck.

Im sure i'll be back soon either with a big smilie or my tail between my legs
EON are changing their service in October so i'll just make the most of it while it lasts. Like you say, this kind of multicasting requested qued data cant last for too long at ?54 till October including the DVB card!
Anyone into MP3's or VCD's this service at the moment is a dream come true.
Oh well, back to my 64k browsing

Warm Regards,

rockhard =)
