Stupid standardized tests. I wish these things were a good indicator of your intellectual aptitude.

It's time to retake them tomorrow (old score was 2000/2400). Anyone else taking them? And what about last minute tips...

Good luck, I had a 2010 my first and only time (didn't study though). Thank god I'm done with that crap though. Now I'm in my first year of college @ the University of Chicago.

Ugh...

I'm taking them, too.

If I can get 800 math, 720 critical reading, and 750 writing, I'll be happy.

The test is way too long.

Just relax and go in and take them with a positive mentality.

What do you think SAT stands for?

You mean you'd be happy if you placed in the 99th percentile? No wai

Stupid Ass Test

In reality, though, it is no longer an acronym. It used to be Scholastic Aptitude Test but after much debate they took the name down (according to my princeton review book).

It's ridiculous. If i do the test in multiple settings (3 sections per day for 3 days) I get around 2250's. But in one sitting, taking a four hour test is rough on your mind.

Relax.

I spent the 24 hours before mine lounging in the hot tub, watching movies, and having sex. Slept in on test day, made it to the testing room with about 2 minutes to spare. Helped keep me loose for the test.

Unless you plan on going to a top college, who cares what score you get?

I saw so many kids in high school get like 4.0 GPAs with like 33 ACT scores and then go to state college.

I was like, WTF, you could have slacked off.

In my (limited) experience the people who complained about the SAT did well in school through hard work. The people who do well on the SAT do well in school without having to work as hard.

Do you work hard and get good grades?

I think it stands for 'scholastic aptitude test' which has little, if anything, to do with intellectual ability. Although the SAT's can be a relatively good indicator of college performance they are not well correlated to IQ.

We get the results for tomorrow's test the day after the regular registration ends for the December test. They just want their $20 late fee. Grr.

Some studies find a very strong correlation between the two.. http://www.gnxp.com/MT2/archives/002360.html

Of course there are many critics to these studies, probably among the same ones who say the test are biased toward males and whites..which explains why asians do so badly on them

Oh yeah the BEST tip I can provide you with your SATs is to get a TI-89 if they still allow them. They solve equations with simple punches, which can turn a 5 minute problem into a 30 second one.

How much sleep is recommended? I'm thinking 8 hours is a good estimate right?

State Education Commissioner David P. Driscoll called the decline "disturbing," but agreed with the College Board's theories about why the scores went down.

?One year of declining results does not erase the 14 years of steady progress we have made on the SAT,? Driscoll said in a written statement. ?While any drop in performance is unsettling, without a multi-year drop in our numbers it is impossible to tell if this is the start of a downward trend, or merely a blip we will make up next year.?
[Statistics for this years' SAT] - This COULD imply this year's test is harder than previous years'.

Best tip ever. With my 89, math sections take an average of 10-15 minutes, so I can easily flip back to an english section or finish up writing the essay...

That's true... start discussing the test afterwards and you could get screwed over.

Interesting. I think that's the study I was thinking of, but I remembered it backwards for some reason. I remembered it as .40 correlation to IQ and .80 correlation to grades, but it's the opposite. Thanks for correcting my memory. Must be older than I feel.

Did ya read the part about the difference between the recentered test and the original? Very interesting.

What program do you use for the Ti-89? Let me get a link. Or are you just talking about the built in algebra computing feature?

The questions shouldn't take more than a minute or two, though. I don't know any question that has taken me more than 2 or 3 minutes to solve.

Yeah, but what are the chances he's really Adish Kasi of Massachusetts?

Yeah the built in stuff should be fine for most problems.

Add to the fact that the SATs are multiple choice, there should be no reason at all to miss any computational problem. If you get confused, just plug in the numbers and see what makes the most sense.

And what are the chances that I'm actually telling the truth about flipping back ? . Anything goes on the internet.

Yeah the built in algebra system... Solve and Factor - Also does systems of equations. Why spend the time acutally thinking about a problem when you can push a few buttons and get the result? Of course you need the ability to actually comprehend the problem. For some of the geometry ones if you've got extra time and you're stuck, use Cabri Geometry. It's time consuming but it works well as an approximation tool as a last resort.

I don't believe you are. Man, that would be funny though, getting caught cheating on the SATs...

I'm taking the PSAT next week, and it's not supposed to be more than 3 hours. What's funny though, I have a practice PSAT test (full test too)...and it looks pretty easy. Practice test for a Practice test. Yay.

It gives you a way to figure out the score on your own for the practice PSAT...but it can only get to around 270. I wonder how I could "convert" that to an estimate on how I would do on the SAT (because the PSAT is supposedly extremely similar to the SAT).
