I'm curious about why Erdogan has authorized all the leaks thus far. What's his endgame here? Is he really just upset that Saudis committed a crime in Turkey? Khashoggi wasn't a Turkish citizen or resident...and technically the murder was on "Saudi soil".

Wouldn't Erdogan normally side with US/Saudi interests over those of Iran? I don't think Erdogan holds freedom of the press in any high regard in his country. So why insert a fat wedge between MBS and the US? What does he hope to accomplish???

Sorry, but I just don't think his motivations are clear.

It's a turf war.

wut?

The Turks are close with the Iranians (minus some squabbles over the years). Erdogan even sent Turkish troops to protect Qatar from SA.

If he has info that will hurt SA and make the US pull back support he's gonna use it.

Clearly I hadn't been paying attention to that relationship... I knew they opposed sanctions because they rely on Iran's oil exports, but I didn't think they had anything other than an economic relationship.

well, he's overestimating the integrity of a country like the US under a pretend-despot like Trump. Trump won't budge, simply because his family (primarily the Kushners) are now wholly in debt to the Saudis, to the tune of at least $2 billion.

It's not like we need more evidence, but if there was ever a case that explicitly shows the pitfalls of electing a thoroughly-compromised lifelong conman who is susceptible to multiple tiers of blackmail from many international criminal groups, to the most powerful position in the world, then this is it. Country? What country? None of that matters: Trump, and only Trump, is first.

There is also significant ethnic linkage in addition to their trade/economic relationship.

I doubt Erdogan thinks can sever the relationship but he can certainly cause problems and erode a bit of SA's pull. The public pullback has been highly embarrassing to the royal family even if it's not a lot in dollars. Causing a significant and potentially ongoing loss of prestige can often be fatal (politically and/or mortally) in a court...

And Erdogan is still mift over the SA state media's glee over his presumed death during the coup attempt. He isn’t a forgive and forget kind of guy.

What was the level of threat the journalist had over SA gov for them to kill him? Or are they just a barbaric regime and miscalculated the risk they were taking over some petty journalist talking smack about their prince?

It’s not about what he had. It’s about what he could cause. Can’t have free thinking or any independent thinking.

Hey OP. My English is challenged.

Should the title say 'a' critic? Why is a/an determiner missing in front of (a?) noun?

Can someone explain to me the grammar or is it deliberately missing because it's a headline?

You are correct, in English headlines often deliberately don’t use correct grammar to keep them shorter and more to the point. (At least I think that’s why) It means ‘a critic’.

If they wanted a short headline it would have said, "Sauds being Sauds".

I do want to hear what the Suads have to say, "He just fell apart."

Well, they are barbaric; torture, rape, beheadings and cruxifiction for starters. Khashoggi, amongst other things, believed that the future of SA was in a representative democracy - hardly inline with MBS' quest for power.

Yeah definitely a lot of bad blood between him personally and SA. Some people think he also might be shaking them down for a big payout.

The second one. This was an insanely stupid thing to do. MBS clearly authorized it and the king reportedly has now stripped him of control of any foreign operations.

MBS is a millennial. That's the real reason for all of this. Goddamn millennials, again!

Anandtech thread titles can't be more than 40 or so characters. I tried to compress as much info into the title as possible. I used every allowable character and didn't have room for proper grammar and the use of "a"

I un-ironically think that his generation is spoiled, lazy and has no regard for social or political norm. That has caused him (MBS) to be rash in his actions both domestically and on the world stage.

MBS killed Khasshogi because he is a Millenial. Change my mind.

You guys believe what you want but all you have to do is look at the coverage on CNN vs MSNBC to see the difference between an organization that is pro-Saudi and one that doesn't have a stake. MSNBC is going hard and reporting everything available while CNN is omitting a lot of stuff and acting like Turkey isn't credible.
did you eat lead chips as a kid? i'm literally switching between both channels and they are covering the same info. nothing is being omitted purposefully by CNN.

You've made an assertion the onus is on you to provide actual evidence. Btw merely restating your assertion does not qualify as evidence.

Sec of State on his way back from Saudi Arabia
Before Pompeo left Riyadh on Wednesday after the meeting, a reporter asked him if the Saudis had indicated whether Khashoggi was "alive or dead." "I don't want to talk about any of the facts," Pompeo responded, and the Saudis "didn't want to either."

WTF, neither Pompeo or the Saudi's talked about the facts?? Why the hell did he go over there other then to help orchestrate the cover up??
