Watch your mail for a certificate from Land Rover. It's good for a $1000 on a Land Rover Discovery or Freelander. It expires April 30, 2003.

I think the Range Rover's are rated pretty well, but for $60K they had better be! If I had $60K to blow on an SUV, I'd get an X5 plus a Mini Cooper with the $ that's left over...

How is it a good deal? I got one on the mail too from Land Rover, but on the newspaper many other dealerships post $xxxx off msrp... whatever... i'm not buying it.

They keep showing those yellow ones during the basketball games... As far as I can tell the only option it is missing is a big red stop sign and some flashing red lights.

I'm mixed on the new Rovers. At first glance, I was like, "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! THAT IS OFF THA HINGES!!!" Then I saw one in person. I really like the redesigned front end, especially the headlights. The back is also very nice. It's when I look at the side profile that I go, uhhhhhh.

I am a huge fan of the prior body style. Perfectly balanced, looks waaaay nice with the factory 17's that look like the old Testarossa wheels. And up here in Washington, Rover's are a dime a dozen. You can find a decently low mile-d Range for less than $30k easy. If you look hard enough, you can snag a 4.6 HSE. Shoot, there are 01-02 Discovery Series II's in the 30k mile range for around $20-25k.

Unfortunately, I'd still need to be bumped up 2-3 more tax brackets to get either!!! Will just have to be happy with the '94 GMC Jimmy we just INHERITED.....thing only has 55k miles!!!

GMC Jimmy's? X5? Grand Cherokees? I suppose... as long as you are not going offroad. If, however, you actually plan to go offroad, the Land Rovers are head-and-shoulders above just about any other stock SUV on the trail. If, however, you are simply into "sport urban vehicles" where the toughest thing you run over is a pot hole, then just about any old
SUV will suffice.

p.s. I dont own a Land Rover, but I have seen plenty of them in action on real trails. I've ridden in other *highly* modified vehicles (Xterras/pathfinders) in groups that contained both stock and modified Land Rovers, and the LRs are very trail worthy (which is more than you can say for 99.8% of SUVs sold)

It is pretty clear that most of the posters to this thread haven't a clue what a Land Rover can do.

I disagree.

A few years ago Car & Driver had done an offroad head to head comparison of Land Rover, Grand Cherokee and I believe 3/4 more SUV's that were popular at that time. Guess which came out tops in off road performance. Grand Cherokee, although by a slight margin over the LR. I was surprised myself, having heard so much about the LR. Surely you will agree that the editors of C&D know what they are doing. I shall try & look for that article - it may be archived in Car & Driver's website. IIRC the test was conducted somewhere in the mid west or Grand Canyon.

My comment was based on the 'value' (as opposed to cost) of the vehicle. If I can get similar performance in a vehicle costing nearly half as much then why would I even look at the expensive one? Of course there are those who buy vehicles for 'bragging rights' or even nationalistic reasons - let them spend the extra money. I shall keep mine in the bank. Thank you.

There is no doubt the LR is a very capable offroader but to say "the Land Rovers are head-and-shoulders above just about any other stock SUV on the trail" is not true. It may have been true 20 years ago but no longer.

The Defender was the only one worth buying, IMO. Too bad they don't import them into the US anymore. Stupid safety regulations

A $65K Land Rover is probably superior technology-wise to most other SUVs (I can't say for sure...the only one I've ever owned is a Grand Cherokee). But what percentage of owners out there are actually taking their $65K Rovers offroad? Despite the Rover marketing dept's attempts to convince me otherwise, my guess would be "very few". Probably the same as the % of M3 or S4 owners who show up for autocross or track events Incidentally, almost 100% of the H2 and Rover drivers I've seen in my area appear to be suburban moms--not the type to do much offroading.

My real estate agent drives the fully-loaded $65K model and I've been for numerous rides. It's cool (to this geek, anyway) that he can lower the suspension for passengers to get in and then raise it back up, but otherwise I wasn't too impressed with its comfort or convenience as a daily driver.

Incidentally, have any mags reviewed the H2? I'd be curious to see how it stacks up against the competition.
