90%+ of the people subscribed to AT forums can't handle more than a 300hp sports car.. I am talking about opening it up and driving it hard... So, the car being talked about here is just insanely out of reach for all but the best drivers..

Ok, you can drive the cars, but just don't get crazy or you will waste that money fast. Me? I'll just take a Z06 or one of numerous other stock sports cars (S2000 or Elise ocme to mind) - plenty of car for me and a heck of a lot safer. Super duper brakes and suspension can only do so much to quell poor reaction times, 6 brewskies, and no racing classes..

Well said. A $300 driving school day is the least you could do to make the most out of your car, and to become a better driver overall.

I improved greatly over the course of a day, and was passing much more capable cars doing so. You'd be surprised the number of people out there with more money than driving skills... and won't improve (don't want to hurt the car, not enough b@lls, etc).

Huh? I think you meant the '83 vette. That year skipped. The "new" C4 '84 model came out in the spring of 1983. Please know what you're talking about if you're gonna post.

A doctor owned mine since new and was buying a new one. The check engine light was on and it needed a rotor resurfaced. Chevrolet made that seem like it needed $2,000 of work to the poor doctor guy. Anyways i did buy it for 3,000 with no scratches, or any blemishes, note: spotless leather interior and exterior! I had the engine stroked to 383 since it had 160,000 miles on it. New heads, cam, carb conversion, headers, TC-Yank, 850 Demon, 3.73 gears, so for about 3,000 it now makes 500hp without any spray, etc. I guess i just got lucky watchin Yahoo classifieds at the right time. Once again, it was in perfect condition and still is. Ohh also a custom radiator and shroud...

I was always a huge import fan until the Z06 came out. One test drive sold it. It has drawbacks, but for the money, you can't touch it. It performs as well or better than cars that cost 2-3x as much. The most fun is taking it to DE days. I'm doing a DE the 17,18th up at Road America. I can't wait. You simply can't put this car to the limits on the street.

As for the LPE 427TT, it's completely awesome. It isn't that it's .7 seconds quicker to 60. It just produces so much more power everywhere. Roll on's in 5th (an overdrive on the Z06) are just incredible. The thing that is so amazing about the LPE kit is that it's as streetable as a stocker until you put the hammer down. I know all kinds of guys running wild cam and head kits and though they build some nice power, the lopey cam makes it a chore to drive on a day to day basis.

Of course, with anything much over 450 rwhp, you basically need to mini tub this car and run wider tires out back. The stock 295's just don't cut it. You won't get traction until 4th gear. With the stock Z06, you brake it loose in the first two gears even with sticky F1SC tires. At the track last year in Bowling Green, KY for the Z06vette fest all the stock Z06's were running mid 12's and the really high hp cars were running 14's and 15's because they couldn't get the power down. The track prep was for sh*t though. I can't imagine what it would be like with an old Hemi 426 with those tiny bias ply tires.

On-track events are serious fun, even if you're not driving a 'Vette. I've seen guys doing those in sh!tboxes and they would easily take more powerful cars ('Vettes, etc.) in the corners because they were so much lighter, although the power cars would take them down the straights. I used to do Summit Point now and then when I was into cars. I only had an old 5-liter Mustang though, no 'Vette.

Little lightweight nimble cars are a lot of fun on the track, but the Z06 rules at Road America because it's a hp track. I can't imagine taking something like a Miata to RA. It's funny because they can hang with you in the tight stuff, but when you get on the straights, they move right over and you pass them like they are standing still. I think that I'd get bored on the straights with an underpowered car. I'd probably want to go to a tighter track if I had less power.

The Z06 is no slouch either with close to 1g cornering. It actually feels better on the track than the street cornering wise. The car doesn't weigh all that much either. It's 3,100 lbs. I think that's the weight of a new Golf.

I'd love to get my hands on a Lotus Elise. That car would be a total blast at most tracks. I know a couple of guys that have one on order.

I rode in a brand new Z06 last night and...WOW!!! I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING!! It waas freaking amazing!! We took corners SOOO tight that I was sure we were going to slam into something, but nope, it hung on to the road like a freaking speed demon. Wow. What a thrill. We busted out over 90 at 4500 RPMs on the road and...well..i creamed my pants.

There isn't much demand for it, and stock makes very little horsepower; I've heard of dyno measurements of sub-175HP.

Also, there is no such thing as an '84 Corvette.

OMG hahahhahahah!!! I don't know what I'm talking about???? Please make me laugh again!

There is an 84 Corvette and it has the L-83 Crossfire engine. There is no 1983 corvette. Actually there were 43 of them made, but none sold to the public. There is still a white one at the National Corvette Museum if you'd like to go visit it in Bowling Green, Kentucky. $3000 is NOT feasible for a good running '87. Not yet. Maybe in 2-3 years when the C6 is out. The C3s are on the rise in price again so the early C4s should finally tank within that time period. Like I said, for $3000 it would have to be gutted of a drivetrain, be in horrible shape, or steal it out from under someone needing cash FAST.

The concave bumper was from 1984-1990 ('90 ZR1 got the convex rear and old front) and then 1991-1996 all got the ZR1 style rear and the updated fron fascia.

Anything else?

You guys got me. Last time I flame someone on 3 hours of sleep.

I stand behind the rest of my comments. $3000 is below market value but not impossible if the owner doesn't realize what he's got when he sells it.

So what do YOU drive?

The corvette is still freaking ugly...they need to figure out how to slim up that HUGE J-LO @$$. The only american sports car that is worth looking at is the Dodge Viper...ESPECIALLY the 99-02 models the smooth curves and aggressive look put the Corvette and many foreign cars to shame...OH and the stock 4 second 0-60 time isnt bad either.

I like a little ass, and i'd smack it to j-lo anyday.

The viper is an the trnasvestite of sportscars. It has the wrong kind of balls. The kind that make you feel dirty when you are done.

Cool! Are you going to track it or autox it? It's one hell of a car. I'd love to have one in my stable. I know a guy that is selling his turbocharged Miata to get one of these. The Z06 will be his street car (I think it's a waste) and the Elise will be his track car/autox car.

do they make it for honda?
No, but there are plenty of tuners that do. Don't expect to get 725 hp out of a Civic motor though. Actually, 725 is the baseline for the 427 TT package. There are other modifications that you can do to get it between 800 and 900 rwhp. I know a guy whose car dyno'd at 825 rwhp and 1000 rwtq. That's amazing for a street driven car.

I've driven a Viper GTS and they don't make as good of track cars as the Z06 IMO. It does have a butt load of torque, but I just don't like the sound of the Viper. I would've put a big block V8 in that car if I was running Chrysler development. The car looks like it should sound like a nasty V8.

It's going to be my autoX car. I'm really anxious to get it. Been waiting a long time.

For sheer balls to the walls fun, you can't beat the C5. For impressing the women, the M5 does a great job. It all depends on what you want to do. Personally, I've got a Lexus GS400 for impressing my girl, among other things

Me; I chose the C5, planted a big cam in it, added some great flowing heads, headers, yadda yadda yadda and badda bing, I've got about 425 ponies at the wheels (somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 at the crank). Let me tell you personally that my car is fast. Scary fast. I can't imagine what an extra 300hp at the wheels on top of that feels like. I've yet to run into much that is even formidable, much less fair to run against. It's nice being the fastest, yet not having to prove it. But it is also fun as hell having the option of pushing the go pedal and going bye bye when I feel like it (which is all too often the case).

Here's a shot of the Z06 in the Road America paddock last fall. This was towards the end of the weekend, so my racer tape was coming up.

Sal,

I've got the Thunder 224/224 563/563 112 cam, WestCoast Cylinder Head's heads (A&A) and Bellanger headers. Some of the numbers I've been seeing lately with just a cam and headers/tuning without heads are crazy :Q Stock heads flow like mad these days.

I know someone who has a thunder racing cam. Don't know what the numbers are on his car though. I think it's milder because he is making quite a bit less hp than you. He's still trying to get used to it on the road course. Andy's (A&A) heads.. Bellanger.. Haven't heard Bellanger in a while. Most guys are running either LGM or Kooks nowadays.

The Z06 has LGM headers, Random Tech cats, LGM x-pipe and B&B PRT exhaust good for 390 rwhp. With a cam and heads, it would probably be in the 460 range. I've seen higher numbers, but for wilder cams and heads. This car is driven on the street and the road courses, not the drag strip.
I'll build you a 700hp (at the crank like they are building, not wheels) car for much less =)
Would this be all motor or FI? Is it a streetable package?

If I had $130k to spend on a toy, I would get an airplane. You guys should try flying sometime, it's the best IMHO.

Mmmmmmm........nice!

Of course, with gas prices nowadays, and the fact that this thing will likely pass everything BUT the gas station........

then again, if you have $50k to spend on a car, then another $50k to add to it, I guess ya don't worry about that, do ya? LOL
