I have a bunch of email and adress book stuff I want to save. However, I want to format and clean insyall xp pro. Then reinstall my email and address book from my old ME system. What would be the best way to do this?
Thanks

I dont have outlook installed on this machine so i will try from memory...

In outlook you can backup the data through I think file->export. It will start a wizard to guide you through it. Basically it will create a backup.pst file that you can later file->import from and restore your outlook to how it was preformat. The wizard should be able to guide you through backing up the messages and the address book, I am not sure if they are both backed up at the same time, or if you have to run export twice.

when i reinstall i back up the emails by just highlighting them in outlook express and then dragging them into a new folder. Then I save the folder and once windows is reinstalled I just do the reverse and drag the emails back into outlook express.
as for the address book, you need to open it (so it's a separate window of it's own) and then selct file/export/address book(WAB) and then save this file. then just import it into your fresh outlook express.
for some reason the export options in the outlook express file menu don't really seem to do what you'd expect. full outlook can export all it's data in a .pst file but i don't think express does
good luck

Outlook Express files have the .dbx extension. Do a search and save by whatever means you desire.

You can also locate them by opening OE and clicking on Tools > Options, then the Maintenance Tab and then the Store Folder button.

I usually do a copy on the path shown there and go to Start > Run and paste into the Open: field. Hit Enter and voila! Great way to navigate to copy those .dbx folders after your reinstall.

As the folks above said, search for the .dbx and you'll find your mail store on your ME box - it's in the c:\Windows\Application Data\Identities\{some long number with letters}\Microsoft\Outlook Express directory. The *.wab is the address book. Copy those to somewhere and then "import" them into the new Outlook Express.

usually i change the default store folder of outlook express, i create a store folder on my back up partition so that whenever i format my mails are safe on the other partition, also i backp-up my address book by exporting it somewhere and it's good to back-up your e-mail accounts so that you don't have to remember the password and settings etc..

Is the process for importing/exporting similar for the full version of outlook? I just had a system crash, and I need to be able to recover emails/folders and address book without the wizard's help.

As long as you have the .pst file...you should be good to go.
