I went to see Saw 4 last night. Not my favorite genre but oh well. I actually liked the first 3 in the series. And I've never had a problem understanding the plots for the first 3. But Saw 4 has thrown me for a loop.

The opening scene shows Jigsaw on the autopsy table and they take a wax covered tape out of his stomach. The detective listens to the tape and the the real movie begins. I think the autopsy scene in reality is the last scene in the film only time shifted to the beginning. Anyway, where I get lost is near the end of the movie they show the new jigsaw in a continuation of Saw 3. Jigsaw dying on the table in the warehouse and the same detective playing part of this game. How can he be part of the game when he didn't actually listen to the tape until jigsaw was getting an autopsy (Which presuably happened after the final scene from saw 3?

Confused? so am I. Anyone care to explain?

Well... The way i took it was the bit at the end they show the detective walking in on the operating room where that womans head was blown off is actually what happened after the end of saw 3 before the start of saw 4, then they autopsy Jigsaw shortly after and the tape is found in his stomach.

But then my friend is saying that saw 4 is all happening at the same time as saw 3, so where the detective walks into the operating room at the end of saw 4 and finds the womans body, her husband and Jigsaw.. Its actually just happened..

Its quite confusing and i can't say i gave it my full attention either so!..

He's part of the game because 1) He worked for the same department as the other cops and 2) Jigsaw picked him to be part of Eric Matthews test, as well as the fact that he was aiding Jigsaw. The tape was not his "let's play a game" tape, which we can only assume he got a long time ago and is still carrying out.

Three and four were happening at the same time. Once you hear the tape, the officer then flashes back to the events where he was the bad guy, which was the majority of Saw 4.

I did too. But, when I was watching it and some of those scenes came up the timeline seemed like it was off.

Only part that confused me was the detective getting the tape from his stomach and then ending be him getting locked in the room where jigsaw died.

Well, it's all a "retrospect" of what happened in Saw 3 that takes placec in the memory of the detective that finds the autopsy tape, and that detective is the one who helped Jigsaw out with the hard tasks, also setting up some of the targets.

Ex: Black guy who defies orders when the woman is impaled, and he goes over the mottos of Jigsaw as well as explaining you can't save everyone

Wrong detective. The one that got locked in was the FBI guy.

i took it as saw 4 happened in the same time as saw 3. i didn't take it as though the main detective guy (guy who was strapped in the chair and going to get electrocuted but lived) was in a test, but was rather just helping out jigsaw and was working with him.

however i do not understand at all what the hell his motivation for all that was. the way he acted didn' seem like it was just his "test" to do his part, he seemed like he was a sicko like jigsaw was.

We'll find out with Saw 5. There were a couple loose ends from 3 and a bunch from 4 that still need to be explained.

I believe saw 3 and 4 happened at the same time. the whole movie was a flash back from the autopsy table onward. also remember that in the movie they mentioned "another doctor has gone missing" meaning the woman from the 3rd film. and they mention "another" because one of the men from the 1st film was a doctor.
