Saw a Chiropractor for the first time yesterday....

So I have been getting massages pretty regularly for the past 4 years and recently I switched to a massage therapist in a chiropractor's office and I have been complaining primarily about my right shoulder and neck area having a tight knot for a while now. It was a real dull pain and knot in my upper shoulder area.

After all my x-rays and investigating to make sure my insurance covers the treatment I went in for my first adjustment yesterday after work. After signing up for his "program" which only ends up costing me $130 (13 visits) he performed his adjustment on me and then put these muscle electrode things on my back and let them work my back muscles for 12 minutes.

I have to say I am very happy right now. My shoulder muscle/nerve pinch pain is 85% gone and the muscle is just a little tense. When he was doing his adjustment on my neck on the right side it made a significant pop/crunch noise and I knew it was out of alignment for sure. The rest of the adjustment didn't really pop as much as that initial neck adjustment which was most of what was wrong.

I realize this isn't the end all be all of treating pain and sickness, but I must say he did something to my neck that no medical doctor could have.

Are you going to update this thread after 13 weeks, and again after 26 weeks (assuming your treatment ends after 13 weeks)?

I'm going to have to disagree with you there and stick up for Osteopathic Medical Doctors. I'm a big believer in massage therapy, osteopathic manipulative treatment, and chiropracty. Will people still hate on these methodologies? Sure. Do we have mountains of evidence to back them up? Nope, but then again, evidence based medicine is still a fairly new concept anyway. Do patients often feel better (often much better) after such treatments? Yeah, they do. Can't argue with positive results, explained or not, placebo or not, can we?

This whole experience has showed me how good my insurance benefits are! I was shocked to find out that the x-rays which were not covered contributed to my annual deductible and all my visits are $10 co-pays like medical doctors.

In the end its costing me $175(xrays) + $130 for visits and that is full evaluation plus 13 visits for a total of $305

I've been having a tingling numbness in my back for quite a while now. I went to visit the chiropractor for it(FREE school chriropractor's rawk), and the tingling was all gone - but only so long as I keep making weekly visits. The tingling numbness would start coming back after two weeks of not going.

I wish I could go to a chiro right now. Since I moved, I haven't been able to find a chiro I like.... so I wait until I visit Mobile...

It's possible that the tingling numbess is caused by something you're doing, so you'd have to stop doing that to make it go away permanently. My chiropractor asked me a lot of questions when I started visiting her to figure out if there was anything I was doing that might cause pain.

i'm always glad to hear about others' positive experiences with chiropractic. when i'm really hurting, it's the only thing that works - and no surgery or drugs - that's what i like best

Well I got two weeks after the back broke off my computer chair. Threw out the chair and got a nice high back one. Back's been tingly ever since.

You had physical therapy. Chiropractic resembled physical therapy superficially and many chiropractors practice physical therapy (effectively, I might add), but chiropractic is a discredited pseudoscience that has less to do with fixing muscloskeletal conditions and more to do with magic.

My shoulders are in constant pain. I do stretches which don't do much. My girlfriend gives me massages but those only help for a day at best. I wonder if something like this would help me.

The chiro I saw told me that adjustments can cure cancer and colds. Also proposed a 6mo treatment (3x/week to start, then gradually decreasing) for $2,000. Nevertheless, I didn't sign up

It might. From what the OP described - a little "pop, shock, and awe" combined with electrodes being placed on the correct muscle groups might do the trick. But as others have pointed out - unless you keep getting your "fix" [scheduled appointments] - you might end up in pain again.

Of the few people I know who have been to a chiropractor - they only say good things. Those people play Ice Hockey - and so does the Chiropractor - so he knows WTF he's doing and he completely understands why they are in pain.

Look, I am not retarded my whole goal from the get go was to get this shoulder pain reduced and I had a gut feeling it was nerve related. I am definitely not naive enough to think that one visit is going to cure me, but for $10 a visit I am willing to give it a go. At $100 a pop I probably wouldn't be in this situation I am just lucky enough to have good insurance.

It is kind of like a physical therapy with spinal adjustments which I fully recognize don't last a lifetime. But if after my treatment regimen is over I wouldn't mind going once a month @ $10.

Be prepared to be involved in a flame war. Not with me since I mostly agree with you, though.
