Myth. The officer does not need to be present. Not even for visual estimations of speed.

ZV

Doesn't need to be present but the ticket will almost always be thrown out if he's not. This is from my personal experience though, I don't have real numbers.

Their video is only set to go on when their lights and siren are on. It is NOT on ALL the time.
Modern camera systems operate on the same principle as a DVR. Always recording, but only saving when needed. Mine would go back and record the last 30 seconds prior to emergency light activation (or the collision sensor). I would absolutely have that on video, as well as about 25 seconds prior to the impact.

About two years ago I was coming home and on a 2-lane 55 mph highway doing about 58 mph, certainly not blowing minds with me speed....

As I was driving all of a sudden I see headlights flip on from a dirt service road and that car pulls out behind me - obviously a cop - so he flies up on me and rides my ass for a while (I assume is getting my plate #).... he then backs off a bit (running the plate) and then flies up on me again - like reallllllly close - no lights this whole time - so after like 30 seconds of this I brake check the shit out of this guy.... not long after that his lights come on.

He comes to the car soaking wet down the front of his uniform - the brake check must have caused him to spill all over himself - and he does the "Do you know why I'm pulling you over...." thing which I explain I have no clue.... he says I was "driving recklessly" by slamming on the brakes and my response was that I saw deer in the ditch and was afraid they would run out so I wanted to slow/stop....

I didn't get a ticket (most likely because he knew he was wrong) but it felt good to scare him.

I approve this story.

jlee. Whats the reasoning behind cops doing the 'right on your ass" thing? I never understood that. Are they watching for how the driver reacts, or what?

here in the AZ i had a ticket dropped when both occifers werent present. i didnt even have to request it, the judge asked the one cop where the other was, he said not present and the judge said dismissed. done. i would have won anyway, the cops stopped me in a parking lot, never saw me drive or even walk on a public street.

Woa!! you were almost in a high speed chase. I once saw something like this and the cop had to pull alongside the car to force him over. Crazy people out there on those roads

Actually, I had a court date for a speeding ticket, & 10 people were left in the room after the last case. No more officers were present. The judge dismissed us all.

There are often small signs at the entrances to parking lots that say the police have jurisdiction in the lot.

It is also often the law, as in this SC law:

Title 23 - Law Enforcement and Public Safety

CHAPTER 1.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

SECTION 23-1-15. Public parking lots within police jurisdiction.

Any real property which is used as a parking lot and is open to use by the public for motor vehicle traffic shall be within the police jurisdiction with regard to the unlawful operation of motor vehicles in such parking lot.

Such parking lots shall be posted with appropriate signs to inform the public that the area is subject to police jurisdiction with regard to unlawful operation of motor vehicles. The extension of police jurisdiction to such areas shall not be effective until the signs are posted.

In any such area the law enforcement agency concerned shall have the authority to enforce all laws or ordinances relating to the unlawful operation of motor vehicles which such agency has with regard to public streets and highways immediately adjoining or connecting to the parking area.

I did a really stupid thing last year. I was driving down the highway doing 90 in a 65 because I was late for an appointment. Driving over a small hill, there was a cop on the other side (they love hiding behind hills) standing by his patrol car with his radar gun out.

As soon as I drove by him, I knew he got me. I watched him walk quickly back to the door to get in to the vehicle. As soon as he got in, I FLOORED it!

I already had a massive head start on him, and my car is much quicker than those slow poke Crown Victorias. Of course, I knew that if I stayed on the highway he would simply radio ahead to other patrol cars and eventually I'd be caught.

So I exited off the highway, and took the closest U-turn to the opposite direction. He didn't even see me exit the highway luckily since I was so far ahead of him, and I heard him flying down the highway as I turned around. I then drove home, staying as far away from the highway as possible.

Looking back on it, it was definitely one of the dumbest things I've done in my entire life. I already had two tickets that year, so if I had gotten pulled over, it would have gone on my record since I already used up all my other options.....plus I was doing more than 20 over anyway.

Needless to say, I missed my appointment, and I drove my wife's car to work for the following 2 weeks just in case they were still looking for me.

Like I said, fucking stupid...
