It depends on the car. I've actually seen brown look really nice on a few cars, like certain VW's. Looks bad on most and terrible on some though
depends on the shade of brown really. In the last few years an unseen before brown became popular and I think it looks pretty cool. It has a greyish tint added or something.
Before that, I had never seen a brown car.

This would be my last color choice if I was buying one.

This one belongs to a homeless person apparently.

I'm starting to see a lot of them around here now. I guess everyone is tired of their Panamera's. Those exploded around here like it was the new S-class. Saw a lot of older Asian people driving them.

The husband/wife orthodontics practice next to where I am right now has a pair. The husband has a black one and the wife has a white one.

There's one I see in town on occassion. I think the same guy owns a GT-R so this must be his more economic "grocery getter".

It sits ridiculoulsy low to the ground, and it's different looking in person than I thought it would be. It's not cheap looking, but there's something to the styling that didn't translate as well as the pictures would show. Can't really put my finger on what that is. Crazy quiet though. All you hear is the gravel under the tires when he takes off.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's like if Saturn had made a $70,000 sports car - it doesn't exactly look cheap, but the pictures definitely add a glamour aspect. Not that it looks bad at all, but almost...plasticy? Molded? I dunno. I only saw it for a minute, would definitely like to check one out closer!

I think an AWD model would push me over the edge. I spend so much in gas right now that it'd about equal out on the low end of the spectrum. The base model has a 208 mile range, which would be sufficient to remove my range anxiety for sure!

It's very similar in size to my S80. I picked up a used Volvo a few months ago and it felt like a boat at first, but I got used to it pretty quickly. Volvo lists it as a mid-size luxury sedan; the Tesla S is only a bit bigger, so I think it'd be pretty easy to manage. I don't have a problem with the S80 in parking lots like I have with other large(r) cars.

I'd love to get a Leaf or Fit EV, but the range is just out of my comfort zone. The top-end EPA range on the Tesla S with the bigger battery is a whopping 265 miles, which is far, far better than the 70 & 80-mile ranges the less expensive electric cars are advertising.

I've been considering a Tesla because I spend so much on gas every month, but once you factor in the really good range & specs it just about doubles the price to $100k+, so you have to really look at the * in the $580* a month figure advertised on their homepage because that jumps up to $1,000/mo, haha. My Volvo eats about $85 a week in Connecticut premium gas, so an electric car would be nice both from a gas-savings point of view & from a low-maintenance POV, but with a car at such a high-end price, you're really not saving any money at all. $580 a month can be a car payment for a regular car plus gas (say $249 + 4 weeks of gas), but doubling that kinda takes the fun out of the math calculations

Why haven't you considered the Volt?

I'm starting to see one or two in the Athens area, was surprised when I first saw it pass me on the bypass a few weeks ago. Looks so much better in person! If I had a better paying job I would totally purchase one right now!

Well, around the Bay Area, the rich people that use to own Prisusessusesus started buying these Tesla S. They're EVERYWHERE.

Periodically I go on the Porsche website to design myself a car and always end up with a brown one. I actually really like brown on a lot of cars.

They're all over the place out here. There are two in the parking garage at my work right now. One of them is baby shit brown - don't understand why anyone would buy a car that color

Same here. No big deal. I saw one on the freeway this morning as I was heading home after going to cars and coffee in Carlsbad.

I've seen them in Denver and even Colorado Springs of all places. It was a novlety at first to spot one cruising by, but now I've gotten used to seeing them. I'd still love one, don't get me wrong, maybe in a few years they will get the price down to the 50k range and I'll scoop one up.

Yeah, they're all over in Denver, guy in my neighborhood has one. I drove past the Denver service station on Friday and was wondering what it was doing next to the Speedy Cash, not exactly the location I'd want to take any of my vehicles for service, much less a Tesla.

Doesn't really appeal to me, honestly. I was checking out my buddy's red one today though and it looks really nice in person. They start at about $40k without rebates and they advertise 900 miles between fillups, but you can get 800 on a TDI Passat. I'm more enamored with the idea of an all-electric car vs. any kind of hybrid.

I really wish Tesla sold an AWD model because there's no way I'd do RWD as my only car here in New England, not with our winters! iirc the base 200-mile-range Tesla S is around $55k after rebates, and when you factor in your gas savings it's a lot easier to justify it ($250 - $400 for your monthly car payment plus $300 - $400 in gas, plus maintenance etc.). However, if you drive a lot and don't have an eco-mobile already, you'd pretty much break even, so it'd pretty much be having an electric car for the sake of having an electric car, you know?

Yeah, it all comes down to economics. When you look at your TCO for the car and factor in the payments, fuel, and maintenance, they look pretty dang good at $50k. I'm usually in the >$22k range, but you could pretty much make it work at that point if you drive a lot. And fortunately I don't have a huge commute, but it's just out of the comfortable range on the existing Leafs & Fit EV's, so even a base model Tesla with 200 miles (and even assuming it drops to 100 miles in the winter) would be fine for me.

I see a lot of electric cars around here from Karmas, Teslas, Volts and Leafs. Out of all of them, the Leaf looks the most hi-tech. Not sure what in particular, but probably the amount of LED lights and shape. The Tesla S seems off in a way in person. Almost has that Kia Optima "sporty luxury" look but also seems cheap. It may be some of the body lines don't flow across panels or the use of plastic where you'd expect painted trim.

i see them all the time in santa monica. its a nice looking car but the first thing i think when i see one is a wide jaguar XF clone.

they seem to be the new "i want one because no one else has one yet" car for rich people, you know because the porsche 911 that they all used to get is too common at least in LA. once enough of them have it , it wont' be cool and the rich will move on to the next cool car ( bmw i8?)

I would have to agree. I was checking out my buddy's black 2013 Leaf and it is a VERY sharp car. Feels very futuristic in a good way, not a gimmicky way, inside too.

For the record, not a fan of the Kia Optima. Bleh.

Tesla is coming out with a crossover model with AWD, the Model X I believe.

Yeah, that's on my list for my family transporter.

Right after I finish fixing up my '99 Escort

I just hope that Tesla licenses their supercharging technology, or if they haven't already, that the EV makers standardize on a charging plug. Tesla is beefing up their Supercharger network, and are saying that they should have full national coverage by 2015, and that by 2014, you'll be able to make a cross-country trip on the supercharger network.

Stopping every 200-250 miles is still a pain in the ass compared to a regular ICE vehicle, but it's free.

Stopping every 200-250 miles is still a pain in the rear compared to a regular ICE vehicle, but it's free.

Stopping every 200 miles and having to wait 30 minutes though...I mean, if you drive cross-country at 75 MPH on the road:

200 miles = 2.6 hours of driving
30-minute charge = .3 hours

We'll round up and say it's a 3-hour loop: drive 200 miles then charge for 30 minutes. So if you go for 9 hours, you'll make 600 miles a day. I guess on a road trip where you can get out & walk around for awhile that'd be good, but what a hassle compared to a gas car where you get 400 miles a tank and filling up takes less than 5 minutes.

I think Tesla should create an open license for their chargers and not firewall it like Intel has been doing with Thunderbolt (high price to license). They should also work on creating customer experiences at the stations, which I think they said they were going to be working on. Arcade plus restaurants would be my vote :awe:

Supercharging capability is optional on the 60Kwh model S. And it was not available at all on the base 40Kwh model.

Supercharging reduces battery life, and it still takes over an hour to recharge the 85kwh model.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Model_S#Supercharger_network

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Motors#Supercharger_network

The 40Kwh model S was cancelled as few people ordered it.

In 2013, Tesla canceled a 40 kW·h version of the car due to lack of demand. The customers who ordered this option have instead received the 60 kWh pack, but range is software limited to 40 kWh. It will still have the improved acceleration and top speed of the bigger pack, so will be a better product than originally ordered, and can be upgraded to the range of the 60 kWh upon request by the original or a future owner ($11,000).[47

I guess this means the base price of an S with supercharging capability is now about $12K higher since you have to buy a 60Kwh version and add the capability.

So base is now $62,400, and add $2K for supercharging. That's after the $7,500.00 tax credit.
