It's tradition for the President of the University and his wife to come out on some sort with some sort of personal transportation to greet the arriving frosh and their families here at Hopkins. In the past it has been rollerblades, those little scooters, etc. Today they are toolin' around on Segways. They seem pretty neat to play with, but I'd never buy one. I actually happened to run into two people that I took to be parents of an arriving frosh were looking for the cafeteria and I offered to show them the way. It turned out that they were actually the two Segway reps that were accompanying the loaned units. They told me about how they want to make Johns Hopkins into a "Segway friendly campus" and develop some sort of purchasing plan where people affiliated with the University could get them for 10-20% off. Seems pretty silly to me.

Seems VERY silly to me. 10-20% off? Now university students can find $3200-3600 for them. Segways are a neat toy and nothing more.

Electric scooters have been around for a long time and nobody uses them for real transportation.

I saw one in the Newark NJ airport a few weeks back. They look stupid to me.
B. F. D.
Can't wait for the liability lawsuits to start on that POS when the idiots who are driving them think they belong on the sidewalk.

Good luck getting from engineering quad to upper quad. If you have to rush from N.E.B. to
Remsen hall, your own two feet = your best friend.

Even with 10-20% off it's still a ton of money for a scooter... And why are they targetting college students? Do they think college students have that kind of money to spend on scooters?

They demo'd the Segways here at the City of Beverly Hills, CA for the public works, transportation and rec. & park folks. While they might someday make sense for certain workers (Segway did a big pilot with USPS) such as meter readers, etc., they're not cheap ? $5k each. They are not toys though ? they would really save time and money in certain situations. The biggest problem is that most sidewalks are not wide enough to safely have two next to each other, or to mix pedestrians and Segways (the top speed on the Segways is about 10-15 MPH).

my dumbass school bought some for the security patrol. now if someone gets robbed by a cripple, the segways will be able to easily catch up with the criminal

A large group of people going to hopkins can afford them, probably the reason that the segway people are trying to make it happen.

What hopkins should do first is build a parking garage or something, I hate having to go over there for anything, no parking at all. Of course if we are all on segways then there's no need for cars and the parking problem is fixed.

The sad part is that they will end up selling to some idiotic police depts. and other public entitities that do not know how to spend public money. Here on campus most depts have golf carts now. I'm ashamed to ride in one, imagine riding a Segway. Anyone looks silly, like this guy in another personal transportation device.
