It doesn't get any better than this. August 4 game series with the Yanks up 2.5 games.
Smoltz v. Chamberlain tonight.

Hmm only station showing it is 10 and 10.1 in my area... I don't think I even get those via OTA .

I love that if you're a Sox or Yanks fan, then there are only two teams in the entire league that matter. At least as a Phils fan, there are a handful of teams we take seriously

I just hope the Phils don't lose track of Atlanta the way the Sox and Yanks ignored the Rays last year. Can get ugly quick.

I'm a Sox fan, and there are actually THREE teams that matter - Sox, Yanks, and unfortunately, the Rays.

In all seriousness, every team matters to me. The problem with the Sox is, they can't win IN Tampa (they can hardly beat the Rays anymore period); they can't beat Toronto; they can't beat Texas; they can't beat LAAAAAA Angels (unless its the post-season).

I'm afraid the Sox are heading for a downward spiral, ala 2006. This Yankee series is shaping up to be like that (even though the Sox are 8-0 against the Yanks this year, they're still 2.5 games back! Insane!). The sweep in Tampa was a killer, especially with the way the Sox choked the first game away and had to use their whole bullpen only to lose in 13 innings. Gag me.

Unlike the Phils, the Sox actually play in a tough division. A ridiculously tough division, actually.

The Yankees have a lot of aging talent, though, so I think they're pretty motivated to win one more time. It was fun to follow the AL East last year, though.

The Phils can't help that the rest of the division sucks, but the team does have the 2nd best record in the NL. Definitely some wrinkles to iron out, but the pitching situation has improved. Nasty offense. Other than Lincecum during the last hitting slump, the Phils are hitting good and bad pitching alike, home or away.

The Phils are loaded and awesome. The Sox are getting old and are starting to look like the Yanks of just a few years ago - old and lethargic. It's quite depressing, but maybe they'll get their heads out of their asses and start caring again. Otherwise this will get ugly real soon. After this 4 game series at the New Toilet, the Sox get:

- home for 4 against the Tigers (Verlander, Jackson, Washburn....ugh)
- 3 on the road @ Texas (who swept their asses last time)
- 3 at home against NYY
- 4 at home against the White Sox
- 3 at home against the Blue Jays (who the Sox can't beat)
- 3 @ Tampa (Sox are 2-15 in Tampa the last 2 years)
- then finally, 4 @ Chicago White Sox

Brutal, brutal schedule. Considering we only have 2 good starting pitchers (Beckett, Lester), we are in for a rough ride.

That's just it. NOTHING happened to this team. They're just mostly old and quite honestly, overrated.

Theo's 'low-risk/high-reward' signings turned into 'no-risk/no-reward' signings - Baldelli, Penny, Smoltz

With Paul Byrd's signing, it's even more ridiculous. We have a true ace (Beckett), a borderline ace/#2 (Lester), and now five #5 starters - Byrd, Smoltz, Wakefield, Penny and Buchholz.

Our bullpen is overrated, and our offense is completely gone. Papi, Drew, Lowell and especially Tek (man he is completely worthless) are so bad and so old.

There are so many holes to fill on this team. Theo's gonna earn his money this season, this off-season and next. Good luck with all of that.

yuck. tough to disagree with any of that, though I think the bullpen really is good.

It's very possible. After Tito emptied the 'pen Tuesday night they sent Reddick down to make room for lefty reliever Traber. Then JayBay tweaked his hamstring running out a groundball Wednesday night. Green came in. Ugh...

When it rains it pours.

Yeah, I saw Green come in last night. If Bay's still hurting I would think they'd go Baldelli/Ellsbury/Drew... Drew sat last night just because of the lefty pitcher. Hopefully Drew's ok to go tonight.

Youkilis has played outfield a couple games too, though I think he said that he hates it. But that's another emergency option.

Slightly off the topic, but I've worked a couple of nights at my old job and have been forced to listen to the horrible thing called yankee radio broadcasting. Are there any worse broadcasters in all of sports? Some of the comments even make Madden look like a friggin genius. "He would have had him out by a couple of feet, but he dropped the ball." "That's right. The ball went into the glove, and it came out of the glove and fell to the ground, and that's how he dropped it." (Tuesday night's game IIRC) Completely devoid of any emotions or any thought, as if they're just going through the motions of announcing the game, with absolutely no concern of being replaced by a better broadcaster.

I don't think the situation is that bad.
The Sawx got hit with the injury bug this year in DiceK, Wakefield. Two of your top three opening day starters going down is pretty serious.
And who knew this would be the year Papi got old?

The long term core of this team, Pedroia, Uke, Papelbon and Lester is pretty good. And they are home grown talent.
Lowell was a gamble at third and Varitek at catcher, and both have pretty much shown they are on the downside (Lowell) and pretty much over the hill (Varitek).
But trying to make it thru this season without major changes was a good risk. If Papi had hit like Papi and DiceK and Wakefield hadn't gotten injured and Pedroia not come down a bunch they would be cruising.
As it is they still have the third best record in the league.

Suzyn Waldman is the worst radio broadcaster in baseball in my opinion. Usually John Sterling does a pretty good job though.

And it's here now... Baldelli to the DL with a sore foot!

Tonight Youk starts in left field. VMart catching, Casey Kotchman gets his first Sox start at first, Lowell back at third, and Papi is the DH.

I bet my Dad[a durty Yankee fan] Smoltz goes 5 and that asshole Joba tries to hit Youk again.

This isn't just your opinion, it's a fact. She's an embarrassment to the sport, she's so bad. I would feel sorry for Yankee fans that have to listen to her, but it's bad enough they have to root for the Yankees.

to think that the sox might've gotten halladay if they had gotten rid of buchholz, perhaps the most overrated pitcher in this league.
