The joys of SAAS. You get nothing but promises, and a future as long as they care to keep it. I use Thunderbird, and it'll work forever as long as the core networking specifications don't change, and maybe even if they do. That's a bridge I'll cross if/when it comes.

I hope the amount of internet rage against this move leads Google to reconsider. I haven't seen any other service nearly as universal and convenient for agreggating RSS feeds as Reader.

If this is a ploy to push people to Google+ as has been suggested, I will happily continue to not use Google+ out of spite.

That's one of the main reasons I try not to rely on SAAS for my every day needs. I rather run my own server/software and be in total control.

Speaking of companies stopping services, another one that struck me is MSN. Microsoft will be discontinuing the messenger service. Pisses me off because I have lot of old friends in there that I don't talk to often but still talk to here and there. Going to have to start contacting people to get them to add me to gtalk before the service goes down.

On the MSN front you can merge it with a skype account and lose nothing. The more annoying thing is that they have done nothing about the text chat interface of skype which is at best an afterthought. So if you used MSN for text chat it is pretty crappy.

Yeah don't want to use skype, even if there's a way to make it work in Linux (which I think there is) that will mean needing a separate, bloated, client, when Pidgen is fine. I really think it's a dumb move for them to do that.

That's a desktop client. Google Reader is a web-based feed aggregator that we can access from any OS either through web or other clients (from a PC/phone/tablet/etc).

Why wouldn't you want a desktop client? Thunderbird is available for every major desktop architecture, and I'm sure there's several good clients for Android. That way you, the user controls software, and not some company that doesn't give a shit about you.

Ah, thats probably why Netvibes wont load tonight. I've been using Netvibes for years, its alright, nothing super spectacular but it gets the job done.

I've been using Feedly's chrome extension and android app for like a year. I really like it.

Google sells ads.
There are no ads in RSS.
This service should have been banned long ago.

Google shareholders rejoice!

I was just saying that what you suggested is not a comparable alternative because it's a completely different thing. I was not questioning the merit of your solution.

Like I said, Google Reader is a web-based feed aggregator, if someone is asking about its replacement, then the answer needs to be something similar. For instance, on a similar discussion in another place, we've been talking about other places with similar functions. Feedly was mentioned, especially after they posted this article.

I tried using RSS once or twice. It was a hot mess. Absolutely nothing I couldn't be better served by logging into the actual site and taking a couple minutes to catch up on my own with.
