So just because you don't use it, it's useless to everyone else who has exactly the same usage habits as you do. Got it. Thanks for the quality answer there.

You seemed intent on trying to apply your life situation to me. I felt it only fair to do likewise.

Along with many others here, I explained how I use Google Reader in a way that doesn't fit into your "couldn't be better served by logging into the actual site and taking a couple minutes to catch up on my own with" usage.

I'd love to see in what way I'm trying to apply my life situation to you. Did I say you have to use the web the same way I do or you're somehow wrong for using the web how you do it? Is Google keeping Reader open forcing you to adapt to something different? Nope.

Why does it need a browser extension though? Why can't it just be a web site?

This Feedly doesn't have an addon for my browser or an app for my phone. :\

I liked Google Reader because it was available everywhere.

So doing something else with your spare time is out of the question? You're very mature for your age, since you must only be as old as Google Reader to have not had any other options...

Is Google not keeping Reader forcing you to adapt to doing something different? Who cares. You'll adapt.

Reader is a convenience that, judging from the backlash on the news of it going away, a lot of people rely on for news reading. In other forums, people are posting their usage stats and there are people who use it far more than I do (they've accessed literally hundreds of thousands of articles in the time Reader's been active...about 10x more than I do). I'm voicing my opinion and explaining how I use it. You're commenting on something you don't use as if it somehow affects you personally.

I don't touch other Google products like Google Drive or Google Plus but I could totally understand why people who do use those products would be upset should Google decide to shutter those. Just because I don't use them doesn't mean they're not important to a good number of people.

OK for those using Feedly (which is decent, but tries too hard to be pretty IMO):

When I have the 'only unread' filter selected and have no unread items why does clicking all give me old posts just to show me something? It stops correctly at the end of new feeds when there is stuff to read, it's only when there's nothing new that it thinks it needs to defy my preferences & show me old stuff.

That's my major complaint so far.

Sad news, indeed. I use it for my personal reading and for work. Time to look for a replacement.

Speaking of Google+... why the fuck is Google trying to ram the shit that is Google+ down everybody's throats while killing off everything "good" instead?

*Clarity: Google+ isn't horribad, but it's a solution in search of a problem with some horrible implementation and integration issues.

google reader is awesome. it's good for getting updates on sites pushed to you without having to check it manually. You can also "preview" the body of the article without having to click through whatever the article is. The only problem is if there's a delay in the pinging service so updates might not be instantaneous.

I use google reader to push me facebook updates for digital game sites to get timely updates without actually having to use facebook. just about every feed has a link for an rss so you can subscribe and keep up using your preferred reader. you could probably keep tabs on someone if that's your thing also.

For a while there you could have ads on your rss feeds. Click through rates are pretty horrible though (from my experience) so they disabled them a couple months back.

If you've ever used yahoo pipes, you can set up a script to automatically scrape info from a website and generate an rss feed. It can be pretty handy.

I find most "Hitler finds out _____" videos to be dumb beyond a single funny joke or two, but that one was pretty good.

And here's how Digg re-invents itself. This actually plays to their strengths so I hope what they're planning works out:

http://blog.digg.com/post/45355701332/were-building-a-reader

Like many of you, we were dismayed to learn that Google will be shutting down its much-loved, if under-appreciated, Google Reader on July 1st. Through its many incarnations, Google Reader has remained a solid and reliable tool for those who want to ensure they are getting the best from their favorite sections of the Internet. And though they were not wholly appreciated at the time, Reader’s early social features were forward-thinking and hugely useful.

We’ve heard people say that RSS is a thing of the past, and perhaps in its current incarnation it is, but as daily (hourly) users of Google Reader, we’re convinced that it’s a product worth saving. So we’re going to give it our best shot. We’ve been planning to build a reader in the second half of 2013, one that, like Digg, makes the Internet a more approachable and digestible place. After Google’s announcement, we’re moving the project to the top of our priority list. We’re going to build a reader, starting today.

I used reader for news sites, as well as for keeping up with various tumblr sites, if you know what I mean.

I just tried Feedly for a bit. I don't like it much; feels like style over function for the most part, though even that fails since there is a crap-tonne of empty space that could be used to make it look better or, gasp, better functionality.

I'll try out that Digg one once it's ready, but I am skipping Feedly for now.
