When we bought our house we gave up a lot of what we wanted so we'd be close to our jobs. I commute by bicycle year round and Lady Humpy does 8 months out of the year. We're dumb so we also have two new cars for some reason.

I commute with my wife and mother in law so getting to work wouldn't be too big of a problem. And I live in a small town of about 5k, so everything's within walking distance. I guess if anything, I'd lose some weight.

how did the lack of driving ability come into play?

disability? Yeah, I'd need help of course. Might be able to do a majority of my work from home.

license suspended?
- suspended totally, no privileges? Yikes, would suck.
- suspended but you can get limited driving privileges from the court? Some help here and there for odds and ends, but for work and medical needs one could drive where necessary. It absolutely sucks though, that's for sure... not even being able to just drive down to road to get groceries or stuff for the home (at least, not without ramifications if caught). Makes you really start thinking ahead and relying more on the internet. But for stuff as simple as hair cuts or meeting up with friends, it becomes a pain in the ass, most definitely.

I drive to/from/for work, and working at home is impossible. I would probably have a driver provided for me for work purposes. Otherwise, I'm in walking distance of Walmart. Not my favorite, but they have everything I /need/.

I take public transit everywhere I go. I have a car and drive places occasionally, but that's because I'm being lazy.

I take the train, fly, or bike everywhere I need to go, so nothing really.

Yuck. As you should know, all of Ohio is basically terrible for public transportation. Especially Toledo.

That would blow.

yep, TARTA sucks

one winter i was waiting for a TARTA bus on a 45 minute schedule. two of them just didn't show up. so i ended up standing 1 hour and 45 minutes in the snow at an uncovered bus stop just to get a 10 minute ride. would have been faster to walk it myself.

I'd save money since I wouldn't be able to go out for lunch every day. However, I'd have to pay for garbage service to my house, which isn't too cheap for a rural area - for 10 years, we simply have taken the garbage straight to the garbage dump. I'd have my wife drop me off at work, and either wait there for her, else walk the 4 miles home. It's a beautiful walk down an old railroad bed through the woods to about 1/4 mile from my house.

My wife would be a bit inconvenienced - she'd have to drive my truck to pick up grain, coal, and wood pellets (roughly 3 tons per month, total.)

if you couldn't drive for 6 months, what would happen to you?

Well, considering I know that having an epileptic seizure while driving will have your license revoked for exactly 6-months (if caught), I honestly hope that isn't what occurred for you :\

That said, I don't know what I would do. I have to travel to clients all the time, and they can be anywhere. There is no way in HELL that I could do that in my city with public transit. No way. No how. The most I can get out of our public transit is taking it downtown occasionally when needed. Outside of that, clients are all over so it wouldn't work for normal work.

I did, however, recently got a news letter that talked about this subject, and this is probably what I would have to go with if I couldn't drive for 6-months (either this, or Uber everywhere).

Getting around without driving

You can find out more about paratransit services by calling the county transit authority where you live, or by clicking here. When applying, be sure to describe your disability or impairment in detail and explain why epilepsy is preventing you from using the regular bus system. A note from your doctor may be helpful to support the information you provide in the application.

While I could technically bike everywhere I needed to go, 52 miles per day back and forth between work may be a bit much. Plus side - I would be ready for my Ironman a lot sooner than the training plan dictates.

I could work from home for the most part. If I had to be at the office, Uber it is. It would become a PITA for groceries/errands/etc.

Nothing really if I had to deal with that situation. It would be a pain, but I can adapt and survive.

I could bike to/from work 1.9 miles away. Food/groceries, bank, library, large shopping mall, lots of restaurants, Walmart/Target, 15 auditorium Theater all within 2 miles.
If I ever wanted to visit downtown Chicago, Metra train station 300 feet away or Pace buses around the city.

I've driven exactly once in the last two years. Seem to be getting on fine.

I would be fine because my wife could drive me to work. We already drive together every work day.

Carpool to work with one of 6 people within walking/biking distance of home, have the wife do the driving for everything else.

Would suck though, I like driving.
