Sorry, the 980X is already sold.

Got the system up and running. The storms around here knocked power out a few times or else it would have been built a while ago. Took this screenshot.

I haven't done any stability testing or benchmarking yet. This is my first overclock attempt with it.

Yep we want to see builds!

I'm the proud owner of a 3930K ... without a motherboard. :|

I also have the case, power supply, and video cards, but until the Rampage IV is back in stock, I'll just have to overclock it in my dreams.

I'm still waiting for LOL_Wut_Axel to come in and question OP about the purpose of getting a Core i7 3960X instead of a Core i7 3930K.

Last I checked he was banned, so you may be waiting awhile.

We've already danced that dance even before the release. I don't dictate what someone should or shouldn't buy and I would expect the same towards me.

Adam, I'm assuming this is on the H80, right? I played with an H50 a few months ago and it was really nice...can't wait to see what you finally get stable with this puppy!

Yeah, the H80 is performing surprisingly well. I had an H70 and wasn't all that impressed by it. I'm not using the supplied fans with it though. Using two Aerocool Blue Shark fans. I'll take pics if I can find my camera. I tried taking pics with my phone camera, but they were way too dark.

I'm a bit torn between the 2700k with Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z, or take the hit on a 3930k with Asus Rampage 4 Extreme.

The thing that erks me about the Extreme-Z is no gen3 support, and this is the reply I've received from Asus about it:
Thank you for choosing ASUS products.

Unfortunately, we do not have an ETA for release of Maximus IV Extreme-Z Gen3, but according to our Sales Administrator, it should become available for sale in the first quarter of next year. Thanks kindly.

ASUS Canada

I run pretty high resolutions and settings, and the next-gen cards are going to be pushing a lot of bandwidth so I bet there will be a noticeable difference.

LOL_Wut_Axel also has to eat his words about no gen3 support from SB-E. Which clearly it does.

Yeah, it's just not really validated because there are no gen3 boards. I would presume testing will happen when the boards are released (end of 2011/beginning of 2012) and BIOS patches would fix issues identified.

I haven't seen anyone else with a SB-E posting here yet. Guess I'm the only one so far.

I've been playing around with the various overclocking settings of this Asus board. There are so many ways to overclock. It should keep me busy for a while. You can use turbo, base multiplier, or base block. The board will allow you to manually enter a base clock over 100MHz, but every time I try any manual setting the system fails to post. There are "CPU Strap" settings like 100MHz, 125MHz, 166MHz, etc that do work.

Hello
congratulations on your purchase
would you be willing to look at doing a quick encode and see the results?
I wrote some guidelines here and results too:

I imagine your computer should do it faster than 3 minutes.
I would really like to see the result with this top processor
Thanks

François

The page isn't loading. It's probably detecting my disdain for anything Apple. I'll check it out if it ever loads. Right now I'm playing with some overclocking settings.

Looks like there is 1 huge advantage on the 3960 over 3930:

"However, despite the seeming simplicity of the overclocking procedure, the new processors did upset us a little bit. As we found out Intel lowered Tjunction Max temperature for their Sandy Bridge-E processors. Upon reaching this maximum temperature thermal throttling kicks in and clock frequency drops for a short while. For our specific CPUs these temperature thresholds were set at 86°C and 91°C respectively. The Extreme Edition Core i7-3960X could heat up to 91°C, while Core i7-3930K enbaled thermal throttling at 86°C. This is a very serious limitation of the overclocking freedom, especially taking into account that LGA 1155 and LGA 1366 processors can work perfectly fine at up to 98°C and 101°C respectively. As a result, you need much more efficient cooling for successful LGA 2011 overclocking." ~ Xbitlabs

As far as BCLK overclocking goes, it looks like these CPUs have a dead zones around 112 and 143 BCLK. You can get an easy 25% CPU frequency boost by simply moving the BCLK ratio to 1.25x, which would give you BLCK of 125. From there, with multiplier adjustments, you should be able to easily max out the CPU.

125 BCLK x 38-40 multiplier = maxed out in this range.

Good luck!

Oh well, I have the 3930K. I'm ok with 86C Tjunction since I keep mine under 80C or I'll lower the overclock. I guess I'm happy they are protecting my investment. I can stomach frying a $300 2600K, but a $600 chip might make me cry.

I read about the Tj Max earlier. When I loaded up Core Temp it stated "Tj. Max: 91°C". I thought Core Temp was reading it wrong at first.

I actually ran it using the same exact settings.

[01:08:39] reader: done. 1 scr changes
[01:08:40] work: average encoding speed for job is 90.921280 fps
[01:08:40] sync: got 14315 frames, 14339 expected
[01:08:40] mpeg4-decoder done: 14315 frames, 0 decoder errors, 0 drops
[01:08:40] render: 14313 frames output, 2 dropped and 0 duped for CFR/PFR
[01:08:40] render: lost time: 0 (0 frames)
[01:08:40] render: gained time: 0 (0 frames) (0 not accounted for)

The CPU was at 4.25GHz when I ran it since I was testing memory. It comes out to be 2 min 37 sec.

My 3930K came in today. I don't have a MB yet though. I want the Gigabyte X79-UD5, and it is OOS everywhere.

Still don't know about RAM either. Will probably just get a 16GB kit of GSkill.

That is seriously fast. Thanks very much
