I actually ran it using the same exact settings.

[01:08:39] reader: done. 1 scr changes
[01:08:40] work: average encoding speed for job is 90.921280 fps
[01:08:40] sync: got 14315 frames, 14339 expected
[01:08:40] mpeg4-decoder done: 14315 frames, 0 decoder errors, 0 drops
[01:08:40] render: 14313 frames output, 2 dropped and 0 duped for CFR/PFR
[01:08:40] render: lost time: 0 (0 frames)
[01:08:40] render: gained time: 0 (0 frames) (0 not accounted for)

The CPU was at 4.25GHz when I ran it since I was testing memory. It comes out to be 2 min 37 sec.

Jesus. My pair of stock 5645s (2.4) using 12-cores/24-threads are that fast, using the same process tech, twice as much power and an HPTX board.

Now for the real question...

Do you actually see or feel a difference over your old 990x? (not what paper tells you..)

Finally snagged an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme X79 motherboard!

So much for relying on Newegg's auto-notify when stock comes in. I'm glad I checked the site every 4 hours since Monday.

I had to buy the Battlefield 3 bundled version, so not only did I pay an obscene amount for a motherboard, I also overpaid $30 for a game I already own, so I'll be selling a key soon. But I opted to get the $600 chip so I could go crazy on the board, I love ROG boards. I now have 3.

Nothing left to buy except RAM. So many SKUs are sold out, with all the SB-E builds, and I slacked around waiting to see what other folks would use, and now I know by what is sold out. I've never seen Corsair Dominator sold out before. I think I'll just go with Corsair Vengeance 1600 CAS 8, or 1866 CAS 9. I'm not build SB-E for high clocked memory, just for 32GB of it along with possibly trying 3-way SLI with the ASUS 3-slot video cards (we'll see if it will work, one will likely be hanging off the end, if it'll clear the power supply at all).

What are the rest of you using for RAM?

I'm using Corsair XMS3 DDR2000. Two 8GB (2x4GB) dual channel kits. 16GB total. Running at 1600 with 1.5V currently. The 2000 rating is at 1.65V which is what I was running when they were in my X58.

What case will you be using if you plan on getting 3-way SLI with 3 slot cards?

Definitely not any mid-tower cases that I own. For some reason I thought the 650D had a bit more space than my 600T, but I just opened them up, and they have the same number of card slots, all of the extra space in the 650D is on the top. Just looked at the 800D and it has one less expansion slot than the 650D, so that is out too. Probably will have to nix the whole idea unless I build something custom.

I have a HAF-X and I can see it working with that type of configuration. The case makes the P9X79 Deluxe look small after installing it.

I really like the HAF cases, I have a HAF 912 with my Gene-Z build.

You may be right. It has 9 slots in the back which is the exact space needed.

Oh boy, now another dillema -- and the 650D has been so patient waiting for X79 release. When my wife wigs out, I'm blaming it all on you and the SB-E Owners thread.

Hi, Adam Congrats on a dream build!

How are temps at stock/OC?

Also do we have the same situation as the 2500K vs 2600k, with better components going to the 2600k? Any 3930k owners hitting same/higher clocks than 3960X.

BTW, I seriously expected this thread to be an insecure-2600K-owner trollfest with a little AMD fanboyism.

If you do get the cards in there, where are you going to get the bridge(s) to hook them all together? I suppose you can make your own 3-way bridge with one of the long 2-way bridges and two shorter 2-way bridges.

I'm not sure what the temps were stock. It didn't stay stock for long. Using LinX with AVX and 14GB of memory I've seen spikes in the mid 70s. That was at 4.5GHz with 1.4V.

The one difference I know of between the 3960X and 3930K (besides the obvious) is that the Tj Max of the 3960X is 91C while the 3930K is 86C. Not sure why Intel would make them different.

I apologize if this has already been answered.

I was looking at the power usage on various sites regarding SB-E Desktop 6-core CPUs, and have a theory :

It is known that this is actually an 8-core die, with two of the cores being disabled for these first two SB-E models. I wonder if they haven't been cut out of the power distribution, and although not accessible in any real way, are still using power. IIRC this is similar to the Athlon II 631, based on the Llano die, but with the GPU inaccessible. The AII 631 still has the same TDP ratings and power usage to Llano AFAIK.

It really comes down to :

(1)- The 3930 and 3960 are still using power for the two 'off' cores. Which means that the 8-core products will have similar numbers to the current products, almost no difference.

or

(2)- The 3930 and 3960 are not using any power at all for the 'off' cores. Which means that the 8-core products will have 33(?)% higher power usage than the 6-core product. This seems unlikely to me.

I'm using an 800D with Tri-SLI, and let me forewarn you, it is not a good case for air-cooling; especially with three GPUs.

I had to put a front fan mod, replace the stock fans with after-market fans and add additional aftermarket fans. After that I was able to get reasonable temperatures.

It's a beautiful case aesthetically and in terms of functionality, but excluded from that functionality is functional air-cooling

I'd only recommend it for water-cooling or if you are willing to give up ideal temps and play with the fans.

I don't understand why they made 3-way sli boards x16x8x8 instead of x16x16x8? Don't they have 40 lanes available or am I not understanding that right?

Nice, my i7 970 @ 4.5GHz holds it own. 82fps 2m54s

Yeah, AdamK47 had a 980X (although iirc he started the 990x owner's thread)

Adam you never answered the question tho, does it feel faster than the previous rig minus looking at benchmark results.

I'm putting a system together next week with a 3930 and Asus P9X79 PRO .
I will be using the same Mushkin 1333 I'm using now.
Going to start with 16g, may up to 32 ..

Cool, glad to see AT'ers using common sense on their memory selection. Newegg is sold out of the expensive high-speed kits, so I take that to mean a lot of folks are going maximum overdrive. I went with 8 x 4GB Corsair 1866Mhz CAS 9 (in 4 kits because that was all they had), but I plan to run it at 1600Mhz with tight timings; we'll see how it works.
