If I had the money I would be rocking a 3960X and GTX 580 3 GB Quad SLi. Unfortunately I have to pay for college and work part time. In the next few years when I am done with college and have a better job I will have a faster computer then AdamK47 .

If you have an interest, it is usually fun and instructive to watch someone enjoy themselves.
Hobbies become obseessions, whatever works for you.
Visiting the new high end is a gas.
The operative part of enjoying most things is focusing on the can do rather than the can't or won't.
Heckling is "de classe" and "without wit".

Damn fine show. Especially so near release date. fun!

Thanks for the sharing.

A lot of people on this forum have been building computers for a LONG time and as result the value equation may have shifted for them since 10 years ago. For example, in hindsight, was there any difference between buying an Athlon XP1800+ vs. say XP2400+? Nope, both became obsolete just as fast. What about Pentium 4 "C" 2.4 vs. 2.6 vs. 2.8 vs. 3.0ghz? Nope. All of those topped out at around the same 3.2-3.4ghz, also became obsolete equally fast. What about Core 2 Duo E6300/E6400/E6600/E8400? Nope, all of those CPUs also becames equally obsolete despite overclocking to 3.4ghz+. Same can be said for i7 920-960, and will be said of i5 2400/2500k/2600k/2700k, etc.

Excellent points, and a good reminder to us all before we splurge.

Meanwhile, I will enjoy reading the experiences of SB-E owners here. It's like owning a SB-E chip myself, without having to spend a dime!

SandForce SF-2281 does not like the Intel RST 3.0.0.1112 drivers. Stick with the default MS drivers for the X79 SATAIII controller until it gets fixed.

I bought one of those from Gateway and a week later the faster, smaller process Pentium90 came out. Luckily Gateway was pretty cool back then and let me trade up. Still got a hosin' but not quite as bad.

I got my P5-60 from Gateway the week it came out from its Outlet Store in North Sioux City. If I remember the specs were:

Pentium 60
4MB RAM
2x CD-ROM (this was an upgrade from the 1x standard)
ATI Mach 32 with 2MB DRAM (an upgrade from the 1MB standard)
Aztech 16bit SB-Pro Compatible sound card (was an upgrade)
HDD was 500ish MB I think
15" Trinitron Monitor (upgrade from the 14")
Some Yamaha speakers that were an upgrade from the unpowered altec lansing clock radio speakers.

Total price - 3100

That shiz was $$$, and that was 93-94. Played Doom like a dream though

Does the 3960X overclock to significantly higher speeds than your old 980X?

The 3960X is stable at 4.5GHz with 1.384V. The 980X was stable at 4.2GHz with 1.375V. The 3960X runs about 10 degrees cooler compared to the 980X at the speeds specified.

So...SNB-E kept its efficiency improvements despite [H]'s insistence that SNB-E "sux0rz". Glad to know

To put things in better context, I should also say that the temps compared are when running LinX. The 3960X is using a Corsair H80 and the 980X was using a Thermalright Silver Arrow.

Least you sell the H80 to get back some of that wasted money, I mean cost...

Sure thing Suzy. Just PM me you bank account number and I'll get right on it.

Got my 3930K today. I will not have it built until next week though, as I am heading out for a week of hunting.

Excited to get back and get everything put together.

New parts purchased:
3930K
Asus Sabertooth X79
Noctua NH-D14 2011 SE
32GB (8x4GB) DDR3 (was using 12GB of this currently)

Hoping to get around 4.5ghz...wish me luck! I will have some nice screenshots once I get it built and tuned.

I don't think all memory sticks will fit with that cooler...

My p67 Sabertooth BARELY fits 4x4GB with a 212+

But good luck with the build:thumbsup:....Keep us posted!

Very happy with this chip, final results in sig. Best part is that the H100 was at the low fan setting with the max temps on two of the cores at 82C, two at 78C and the last two at 76C.

If someone sees a Gigabyte X79-UD5 in stock anywhere, please PM me.

At this point I would order it from the states even and pay the duties.

I keep looking that at the ASUS Maximus ROG BF3 version, but I don't want to spend $500 on a MB, especially one with a tax for a game I already have.. The only MBs in stock anywhere in Canada are the Asus models, the Gigabyte UD-3 and a few from MSI. I'm really partial to Gigabyte MBs, have been using them for many moons.

Yeh, what a rip-off, at that price, it should be included but the non-BF3 version hasn't been in stock since Monday morning.

I finally folded and bought it, because I wasn't sure how long we might be waiting, and the chip was here. I'll sell one of my BF3 copies I suppose.

I might be interested in the bf3 copy, pm me .

PS: I am new to the forums so if this message wasn't allowed I do apologize, didn't read anything against it in the TOS but I am not a sb-e member so I hope I can still comment here <3

FS/T and WTB solicitations are not allowed anywhere outside the FS/T subforum.

Mother board came today but I'm working until 10:00PM, can't wait to get home and start putting it all together. Is it just me but paying $600.00 for such a lite box just feels wrong. The only other time I can think of that happening involved a diamond in the box with a ring. Went with Sabertooth X79 because my Sabertooth X58 has been solid from day one.

$600 for a top end CPU is a steal. Like, actually think about how insanely difficult it is to design, validate, and fabricate a top end CPU.

Technology amazes me. SNB-E, doubly so.
