SB Live 5.1 cards - X-Gamer, MP3+, Platinum 5.1 - are they the same physical card?

I have heard that only certain cards are chosen for Platinum becuase of sound quality, so basicly they are all the same but the Platinum cards are the hand picked highest quality.

Trinitron: How can that be? The card part # is exactly the same across the board, and all the components are identical as well. I don't think Creative would be able to distinguish the difference if it weren't for the serial number sticker on the back.

I have both the SB live Value and the SBlive MP3. They are not the same card. And they have different quality sound,however,I do not know if that is because of software or hardware. Physically,they are similar,but not the same,and the quality is noticably different.


You get what you pay for.



The SBlive Value is an excellent choice. I will not sell a system that requires an audio card with anything less.

according to the Creative rep. on the Creative newsgroups, in the 5.1 series they're the same card. The older SB Live! series may differ, who knows?

If you install the generic drivers off of Creative's site, how does it know what kind of card you have, whether it be value, MP3, or X-Gamer? Is there a ROM on the board to help it recognize it or what?

1st gen sb live:
live
live value - live without the additional sdpif panel, fewer pins on the extension header, plastic jacks.

2nd gen sb live:
x-gamer
mp3+
platinum
DE/player 1024 for europe/asia
- based on 1st gen
- all are same card, different software bundle, platinum with livedrive.
- all have spdif out jack, gold plated jacks

3rd gen sb live:
x-gamer 5.1
mp3+ 5.1
platinum 5.1 - new livedrive with IR remote
DE 5.1
- based on 2nd gen
- spdif out jack become selective for analog 5/6 channels output

(some details I ommited)

oem card can be any one of the above with some modification.
first live value oem is live value without cd digital in, some have.
later so-called live value oem ver2 is like 2nd gen with plastic jacks instead of gold plated.
recently there is so-called 5.1 oem.
