New cpu, new platform, new mobo...I'll be waiting a while to let the early adopters locate and debug issues.

I make it a rule to never buy the first retail stepping of a new CPU. B3 Kenstfield, ugh, G0 was better AND silly cheaper some 6 months later.

Getting one a day or two later. I'm running on fumes right now, and I've already put off the 760 upgrade earlier this month... I need this man, I need it.

Yeap count me in.

I'll be getting the top model, Core i7-2600K and the highest end motherboard that looks appealing - I'm thinking either Gigabyte or Asus as i've never had any problems with their boards. Just because i can i think i might get either 8 or 12 gigabytes of Ram; depending on the dual channel kits they have available.

I will be ordering through work so i guess i'll miss out on the first round if they sell extremely fast. But i feel like a little boy before Christmas - I can't wait!

Looking to buy in Jan.....may not be first day as I'd like to see some of the early reports back to make sure performance is as advertised and there are no "glitches" (not that I'm expecting them)

I'm waiting for Sandy Bridge, but I'll skip the initial rush and do my build sometime around April.

Of course, SB won't be new and cool then, and I'll just be one of the herd, but I'm hoping for G3 SSDs and some price drops in video cards before I finally pull the trigger. It'll give me time to read up on reviews of the motherboards and maybe even get a new stepping on the 2600K's.

Then you'll be reading all the threads titled "should I buy 1155 SB now or wait for 2011 SB???? HELP!!!"

ROFL! So true!

After seeing how long the X58 platform lasted, I was/am disappointed I did not jump on it back on '08. Learned my lesson and will not wait to jump on a new platform.

I even laugh at myself on that one...

...there DOES come a point where you have to make your decision and not WORRY that the best WHATEVER will come out the NEXT day.

Good lord. There's zero reason for current i5/i7 quad owners to even consider SB, unless they just love burning $ for the latest toys. Most people are oc'd close to or over 4ghz already, I wouldn't think SB is gonna magically make anything more than ~10% faster at most.

If the things OC to like 5ghz, then I'll be dead wrong of course.

I think SB is most appealing to weaker AM3 and Socket 775 users at this time, of which there are a ton out there still hanging on.

I don't expect bugs from initial SB, after all, this is a further revision of the existing architecture, not a whole new wheel.

Many of us do.

Although I am not one of those people who wait in line for the new iphone every June, but I sure will drop 400-500 for a new CPU and mobo when Intel releases a 'Tock'.

Ill be getting sandybridge asap when my funds are right. Its crazy how the ram prices have fallen back down to good so quickly. I got my eyes dead set on upgrading to 3 x 4 GB of ram to accommodate my recent score of a 970. After i get a 580 or two for my x58 im done with it, itll be my main rig still until the high end sandy bridge comes along. The mainstream SB will be for tinkering, so ill probably go for mid range mobo and ram, but ill definitely get a 2600 k

Yeah... and if I procrastinate, it will become "2011 SB or Ivy Bridge! OMG! HELP!!!11"

No worries for me, though. I've got my own tick/tock schedule. New build every three years. Eighteen months later, it gets a memory upgrade and video upgrade if needed. Eighteen months after that, it becomes a Linux server, and is replaced with a new build.

There's zero reason for current i5/i7 quad owners to even consider SB...

Perhaps, but, as you said, there are loads of 775 users looking to upgrade. Including me. After looking at the options, I see no reason to pick up a 760 when the SB is going to be a faster CPU at a similar price.

If I had an i7, then, you'd have a point, however, even then I'd say that the SB upgrade is worth while if only to get moved over to the 1155 socket and allow for cheap upgrades to Ivy Bridge in the future. Sure it means dumping cash into upgrades, but anyone with an i7 who has their eyes on SB has probably already come to terms with that.

Hmm. I kinda see your point, but on that logic I couldn't recommend (going from existing oc'd i7 to SB), as if someone is really looking at Ivy Bridge for the performance leap would be wiser to wait for a probable new chipset revision and better mobos/ddr3 at that time (late '11? Early '12?).

EDIT : Btw, I'm in the middlish category, I currently have a 955BE and DDR2-1066 on a Gigabyte 790X (I think) board. It's serving me pretty well, but I'll be looking at MC specials and see if it's even worth considering for me personally. A lot of it depends on if the games in 2011 are going to be any good, and if they need a CPU upgrade at that point (questionable). Probably my next investment is getting something better than my XFX 5770 though. I have 1920x1200 LCD, and even on current games I can tell I'm borderline at high settings.

I was going to wait for SB but the lack of overclocking killed it for me (on the lower end models).

That said, I might jump on the bandwagon in a year or so once prices drop. I'd rather read reviews to see which ones are the best bang for the buck as well, especially considering overclocking on the "K" models.

This is usually the way I go, but I have been postponing my computer upgrade for years now (see sig), so while I may be one of the most patient people you meet in buying new stuff I think that patience has finally worn out and I will buy a SB within a month of release. I just hope there aren't major issues, and considering that major changes to the platform (single clock generator, disabled IGP on the first ondie integrated GPU on an intel processor, plus many others) I kind of expect there to be issues.
