I blew my load on computer hardware this year. Won't be upgrading anything till 2012.

I will be getting a SB the day it's released.

I'm moving to a new country on January 3rd anyway, and I won't be bringing my PC, so the timing of the release is pretty much perfect for me. I can get by with just my laptop for a few days, then get a nice brand new computer (I'm thinking i7-2600K, SLI 460s and a SSD).

Right now I only have a laptop with a core 2 duo and integrated graphics. This will be my main machine for 2-3 years, so I figure I might as well go for new. Although I usually wait until bugs are fixed, I will be buying this within the first week of release.

I'll be building two systems around SB when it comes out. I think both the 2600K. Looking at the ASUS boards and the EFI Bios. Probably the P8P67.

Spouse factor. Purchase becomes possible when/if I invent a plausible justification. Training pitiable phrases already.

Not necessarily true. While for most intents and purposes my i5 750 @ 3.65GHz is more than adequate for my uses, it does struggle at times with SC2 and sub 30fps minimum framerates. It's the only game where I wish I had a faster CPU. Yes I can overclock my CPU to 4GHz+ but I like my CPUs running efficiently, as it can get pretty hot during the Aussie summer.

Retail samples of SB (they are for sale already in certain countries) have been overclocking to ~4.5GHz at stock volts, and 4.7 - 4.8GHz with mild voltage bumps. They are also much more power efficient than current i5/i7s so thats another plus.

In CPU bound games such as SC2 the extra clockspeed + IPC boost would make a huge improvement:

http://en.inpai.com.cn/doc/enshowcont.asp?id=7947&pageid=7718

If I can get a good deal for my i5 750 + Gigabyte P55 UD3 I'd sell it in a heartbeat and swap over to SB. Apart from the obvious benefits already listed I can also (hopefully) upgrade to Ivy Bridge in 2012, unless Intel pulls another VRM stunt of course...

I'll be standing in line at MC on Jan 9th.

Don't know if I'll be going 2500k or 2600k, but the more posts like this I see, the more I think I'll have to pony up the extra money. I sorely need additional hp for SC2 and the other RTS games I play, and this way I probably wouldn't need another proc upgrade for a minimum of three years.

Probably not. My E8500 is still running smoothly and I don't have a need to upgrade everything yet. The amount of time that I spend on it is probably 10% of what I use to spend on the computer before I got married, and there's a couple other things I'd like to throw money at first.

For me it's SSD first, then SB once 2011 hits.

But I do a lot more than game on my computer, so to me it's worth it to wait. If I was going to be just gaming I'd be all over a 2500K or 2600K. If I was building a basic machine I'd be all over an i5 2300T with integrated.

RAM is something to consider as well. 3-6 months after SB release will pricing be like it is now or will they have skyrocketed? :hmm:

New cpu, new platform, new mobo...I'll be waiting a while to let the early adopters locate and debug issues.

I make it a rule to never buy the first retail stepping of a new CPU. B3 Kenstfield, ugh, G0 was better AND silly cheaper some 6 months later.

I was pretty sure that the TjMAX reported on the B3's were incorrect. Everyone thought the B3's were running hotter than they really were. Intel later released the correct TjMax and instantly all those B3's that were running at 80c load were actually 70c...

I still have my Q6600 B3 (well, dad does). Runs like a champ in my dads rig. I ran it for 2 years at 1.52v @ 3.6Ghz on water, then on air for the last two years at 1.4v @ 3.33Ghz. Not to mention I forgot to hook the fan up after I lapped it and it instantly hit 100c and was there for a full minute before I realized it. If any chip has taken a beating, that chip has and she runs like a champ.

I think the hysteria over the b3 versus g0 was based off of incorrect thermal specs from Intel. Also, the whole thing between the Tcase, Tjunction, etc was confusing to most people. Intel wasn't real 'clear' on the subject.

Anyhow, I had both a G0 and a B3. They both overclocked the same... The G0 might have been slightly better, but they both hit 3.6Ghz.

If ram price is something that bothers you a lot, enough to prevent a new build then buy ram now and wait on other pieces later.

This. For basic use + gaming you really don't need expensive ram for this anyway. Spent $55 on a 4gig Ripjaws set and that was that. Please feel free to link me benches showing otherwise; most I've seen show only a few frames difference between DDR1333 and faster RAM, if any at all. Seems like it only makes a difference with heavy video editing apps anyway.

i7 920, x58 Asus mobo, 6gb Super Talent ram, HD 4890OC... what's the point of SB for me? I'll wait for LGA 2011 SB at least. Most likely, I could upgrade things other than cpu and hold off until early 2012 for Ivy Bridge (22nm die shrink of the Sandy Bridge architecture). I don't think that most need to upgrade from Q6600 unless they are just upgrade junkies. It will be fun watching this stuff play out, including Bulldozer. Enjoy your SB upgrade guys!

None, I'd get a GPU and call it good until at least 2012 were I you. Those of us with 5 year old systems, however....

The point about the Q6600 is incorrect for CPU limited games though (if not others), as has been pointed out ad infinitum in this thread.

Thanks, I will!

I sometimes wait for the first big silicone revision like my three Q6600s G0's that all did 3.6 o my i7 D0 in sig. I may do that again since my rigs are all GPU limited in 95 percent of the games out there.

I have a box of parts for a new build waiting on a proc. I will be in line at MC on the AM of whatever day the chip is announced for retail sale.

Best regards,

I'll be upgrading once I get back to the States around July. I'll be moving up from an Opty 165.

ram prices are supposed to bottom out in january and then go up but now that they have 4 gig sticks the same amount of ram will still be much cheaper than its been for the last few years

Hah. I do the same thing - I just buy it. She grumbles, but make no mistake, she didn't ask if she could buy any of the 40 pairs of shoes on the floor that she never cleans up. Too bad, so sad.
