Well whenever you get a cell phone unless its prepaid you generally have to agree to a contract. Same kinda thing. Its reasonable unless you want to move. If it gets cheaper, you can get it re-rated. The only thing would be if you wanted to go cable. Cable has been higher priced than DSL for a while now. Comcast is still like $50 a month (excluding the 3 month thing) last time I checked.

OK

SBC is NOT a good company. And I've told them that. The only reason they look better now is because cell phones and VoIP have been stealing what SBC considered 'untouchable' profits. That's why SBC's customer service was so bad; they didn't have to care. Well, now they're getting squeezed so they hired better CSRs and are offering sweet phone/internet deals. I've had Vonage for 7 months and SBC has called me every 3 days for the last 2 months with deals to get me to switch back. They don't leave a message but the calls show up on the Vonage call log. Finally, SBC offered me $5/month for Call Plan 50 + $2 more for 2 hours of US long distance for a year. About $15 OTD after fees in MI.

Thx OP, this is a great deal. Also, giganews offers 10gb for $12; $15 + $12 = sweet Comcast replacement.

newshosting offers unlimited gigs for $15. I tend to max out my connection with them, close to 650kbyte/sec.

btw we are talking about newsgroups in case anyone wants to know

i'm picking this up cuz i think everybody deserves a 2nd shot, but let me tell you guys THIS fvcking horror story

I move into an apartment, get sbc global dsl along with a buncha other crap as part of a package (i didn't set it up, or else i would've gone the smart route and gotten cable). so we do that, service is fine for about 3 weeks.

and then service goes to sht. i'm talking like, 60% uptime here. so at first we put up with it cuz we got other sht to deal with. and then it gets WORSE. 40% uptime. so a tech comes out whatever, gives us a buncha filters and sht, and that fixes the problem...for all of a week. and then the problem comes back.

we put up with taht sht for a while again, and then we call and bitch and they send out another tech. can't find anything wrong. gives us new modem. that fixes the problem...for a week. Now, to add insult to injury, that was "out of warranty service". They bill us 140.

So now, it's 10 months later, and we're moving (college students). For the past...2 months, we're talking 10% uptime. Now we gotta break our contract, and its' 160.

$14.99/month sounds great! Do I also need to get their phone line in able to get their Internet connection? I saw that they have one year contract with $200 cancellation fee.

I tried entering Las Vegas but I am not sure if they have their services in Las Vegas. Does anyone in Las Vegas have this connection? Also, how much is it after taxes?

Thanks

Does the TOS say something about you can't give notice that you want your service cancelled at the end of your term w/o a cancellation fee unless you call only within the last 30 days of end of term? Of is that BS?

You PROBABLY will need to get thier local phone service to get thier DSL. Because the FCC just recently ruled and said it was ok for phone companies to REQUIRE you to have phone service with them if you wanted thier internet. Which pretty much kills off competition for other companies reselling DSL lines.

As for las vegas, it goes by state. Pick your state in the web site and see if its offered in your state. If so, put in your phone number and it will immediately tell you if its availible or not. (well unless you have some weird stuff then you might have to call to find out)

A good deal for the 1st year, but the following years cost is? As they state, "At end of term, then-current monthly rate applies."

I dont' know if this will help, but if you're affraid of contracts because you may move...
SBC told me that when you move your SBC DSL gets transfered to your new home. If however that place does not have SBC DSL, they will cancel it for you free of charge...

hope this helps...

Yeah, but what if I am not satisfied with their service after a while? I've been with the same cable ISP sice 2002. They did not make me sign a contract, but I am still with them. It's not like SBC is going to give me a free mobile.

But they do give you the free dsl modem package. Their claim is it's worth 99.00.

And can I take that DSL modem to another phone company? Of course not because there isn't one. I am pretty sure SBC is the only phone company in Ohio that actually owns the local phone lines.

I can't take my cell phone to another company either unless it is CDMA so your argument doesn't apply here. Several types of services require contracts, cell phones, DSL,Direct TV, Dish network. All have cancellation fees if you don't fulfill the contract.
I mean were talking 14.95 a month here. That's the price of some dial ups. If you have a problem signing on maybe you should just stick with what you have.

This is always brought up and it's always shot down, all you need to do is sign up agian for whatever super deal they are running. The prices have fallen through the years:

1. 39.95 for 786K
2. 26.95 for 1.5 megabits
3. 19.95 for 1.5 megabits
4. 14.95 for 1.5 megabits

I doubt it will go any lower but it may get faster with ADSL2 or VDSL2.

I asked to be rerated at the 14.95 rate and he said it's for new cust only. I told him I knew people that called in to be rerated and he said nope, only for new customers. I then asked for the dsl retention dept and he said they will only tell me what he just said. I just kept my mouth shut. I waited another 10 min before I was helped and the CSR at the dsl retention asked a few questions, did say it's for new customers, but offered me the 3.0 MB rate for 24.95 and I politely declined and said the other speed was fine for my purposes. He checked a little more and then set me up with a new 1 yr contract at 14.95. Woohoo!

How can anyone live with 1.5mbit??? 3.0mbit is so much better. You're doing this just to save 5 bucks a month? that's 60 dollar saving a year, big deal. You do realize that the reason why their giving you a hard time is because doing so is not profitable for them.
some have no problems paying 29.95 or 19.95 but 14.95/24.95 is not much less. SBC will have to make it up somehow like doing something sneaky adding extra charges without you noticing, either way they will still get ya.

You know why people think you're such an asshat? All you do is knock people. You have the unmitigated gall to knock me saving 60 for the year when you tell people that 17.99 is too much for 50 DVD's because you want to pay 8.00/50. Who is the flippin' cheapskate here?

Called three times. Retentions wouldn't give me the $15/mo. Their reason is that the contract was renewed a month ago so they really didn't have to give us deals. SBC is evil, I tell ya. A month ago they sent out this "offer" to renew DSL online at $26.95/mo, so my dad jumped on it...and now they're at $14.95 and we can't get that.

Well, the lady did offer me $24.95/mo for the Pro package, so I took it.

Last month they agreed to renew my $26/mo service at the $20 rate they were offering then. I renewed for a year, so it doesn't sound likely they'll go for a further reduction. I can live with it. The service is excellent, tho.

This deal is really for new subscribers only, for current user you will have to bitch your way into heaven before they will give it to you. From a CSR at dslreports we are told to wait a couple of weeks until everything cools down a little before calling in for this new rate. Its not for current subscriber yet so some of you are just asking to be disconnected or annoyed by their so called " let me get the manager first, and got put on hold instead".
They have been trained not to give current subscribers this new rate, a few that gotten this deals maybe annoyed them enough that they didn't have a choice just to get them off the phone.

Heh, I just got signed up for a contract with CableOne that locks me in at $29.95/mo for a year for their 1.5Mbps service. I get like 200kbps upstream. The crappy part is that after I download ~700MB or so or upload ~70MB, you get throttled back to 750kbps down and 100kbps upstream. Ugh, it sometimes really sucks wang to live in the boondocks.

Ah well, cost of living is cheap, so it works out in the end.

P.S. before the contract, the 1.5Mbps cable service is 49.95/mo without cable tv subscription and $39.95 if you have a cable tv subscription. There's other viewing packages that make it quite a bit cheaper, but who can afford that when you just moved out and are a college student? Got an antenna?
