after 3 calls i finally got my internet down to 14.95, i had to threaten to cancel

customer rep said that a lot of customer reps are denying customers because they dont know any better so if you get rejected on going down just call back and keep calling back

i was paying 26.95 so this is a lot better

thanks whoever found this out and posted the deal, sweet deal

I can only get 384KB up and down because I am at the limit for service but it is fine for most everything I do. My cable company wants $6000 to run their lines 1500 feet down the road to my house. I told them where to go.

lmao

Just thought I'd add my experience with SBC.

I'm an existing DSL Express customer and I called SBC customer service, I just happen to mention Comcast has $19.99/month and the SBC rep transfered me to the DSL retention department. The DSL retention department then offered me the internet only rate of $14.95/month with 1 year contract. She made the change with no fuss while I was on the phone, all told took about 10 minutes (long hold time/menu nav to get the first rep, almost no hold time for retention dept). I just happen to be at the end of my contract, but I asked her if a person was already under 1 yr contract which hasn't ended yet if they could get the new rate and she said sure no problem, they just have to call and ask for it.

Don't always assume you are too far from the CO from maps. I live beyond the limit for DSL too, however I get 2.5Mps+ speeds. Bellsouth has actually run fiber from the call office very close to my house. When I call other providers for pricing, they don't know this, and say I'm too far away. I only found this out talking to an EXCELLENT Bellsouth tech, who happened to be a computer geek too. Good guy.

I've had yahoo dsl for 2 years at 26.95 and have been happy with it. Just learned about this rerate trick through anandtech and fatwallet... so I called and got the retention dept. They were more than willing to give me the $14.95 rate as long as I renew my contract for 1 year. I inquired about the $24.95 special for pro-speed... and even though the promotion ended the lady gave me the $25 pro speed price..... I save $2 a month now and I get 2x the speed. GOOD DEAL.

And, I had no problems with my service in the past or with the rep when switching service....

If they give you a hassle, just threaten to cancell... comcast has a $20 6 month plan that you can use as proof you're looking into other services

I tried three times and got the runaround to do this for my parents line. Bitched and moaned and they offered 19.95 per month but i did not take it. I am not so cheap as to keep calling and calling. I've got better use of my time. I'll pay someone 20 bucks to do it for me.. Any takers?

SBC is a monopoly and has no need to please its customers--most of its business is practically mandated by state and local authorities.

My only experience with them is trying to fight a bill. Calling customer service just drove me mad so I called my state's consumer protection agency. No help there either.

I used to be a SBC DSL customer. Switched to Comcast for about 6 months ($29/mo w.o contract as they tried to get me switched).

When I canceled SBC DSL, they never asked me to send back the modem.

If I jump back to SBC, would they give me some credit since I don't need their $99 instant rebate modem?

Did anyone try to ask them?

Sorry for bringing this thread back up again, but I just found it. I just resigned my 1-yr contract at 26.95 several months ago (before the both the 20 and 15/month promotion). Is it still possible to re-rate? Can I threaten to cancel even if I signed a 1-year contract?

It should work (it has worked for others). And you have nothing to lose if you try. Just because you threaten to cancel doesn't mean that you actually have to follow through with it.

I have a funny story about my experience with calling SBC this morning. I have also been on the 26.95 plan, but my contract expired last month. I called 1-800-579-7861, not sure if this goes straight to retention or what (got the # from DSL Reports), but I asked to re-sign for a year at the new rate (for the basic plan).

CSR: Since you were at the 26.95 rate, I can re-sign you at that rate.
Me: Well, I would rather re-sign at the current rate
CSR: we are only authorized to give you the 26.95 rate since that was what you signed up at, 15.95 is a rate for new customers signing up on-line blablabla ... yadda ya....
Me: Well, I would like to get the 15.95 rate please
(this is where it gets funny)
CSR: What will you do if we don't give you that lower rate (obviously trying to get me to say the word "cancel")
Me: I guess I will cancel my service and go with somebody else or re-sign with SBC
CSR: OK that's what I needed to hear you say. I don't know why we have to go through the hassle, but they make us wait for that word and then we are authorized to give you the lower rate.
Me: The magic word huh?
CSR: The magic word.

about 10 minutes of holding, and fifteen minutes and 3 seconds total call time to get my new rate.

Totally forgot to reply to this thread.

I called the day after this rate was posted on Anandtech. Due to backlog, i was on hold for 30 minutes (good thing i used a headset) and went through the CSR first tier, where they wouldn't let me change and so forth. I threaten to cancel, no go. Then I asked to speak to a manager, she said she was a manager. Then I asked, I want a higher dpt. She was confused but told me that she could transfer me to Retention dpt. She did, and the tech did that in no time. I was paying 26.95/month for express, now i'm paying 24.95/month for Pro.

Now, 10 business days after the initial call, i didn't get the d/l speed for the pro, i called in and within 15 minutes they had me up and running at 3mb/sec d/l.

Besides the heavy call waiting time, it wasn't so bad... especially when you consider the volume they must handle when there is such a deal advertised on all those internet sites.

For those existing dsl customers who were able to get their contracts re-rated, which ones had the longest remaining contract term. And what was the reason they don't charge an early termination fee? Is it because you don't actually terminate, but "re-negotiate" the contract?

Just wondering. My sister signed up via Dell in January of 2004 and we renewed for another year for the $26.99/month plan (btw... she never got her $100 rebate from the fulfillment company!). So now she's only 5 months into the current term, though she recently got something in the mail asking her to renew soon.

Has anyone recieved a current bill yet? I have since my month ended on June 13. The price has not changed. I called on June 10 and agreed to a 1 year contract at $14.95. Does the lower price appear the following month or did I get the run around?

I got the rep to set me up with another year for the $14.95 price but they said it would take up to 1 month billing cycle for it to show. But I did call back and another rep verified that it was in their system notes that the change was to be applied. So I guess wait a month and see what happens.

Well, I was/am at my 11th month into my $26.95 contract and they re-rated me no problem. Just have your sis give them a call and see what happens.

I tried calling on Saturday (today), and they said none of the appropriate departments were open. They said also that the Emerging Products Center could handle re-rating.

I signed up for SBC phone & dsl for my new apartment about 3 weeks ago. It's been about a week now since my DSL was supposedly activated, and I still have no service. I am now waiting for a tech to come out and check my line.

One other interesting note, they sent me 4 copies of the welcome letter.
