I re-rated from 26.95 to 19.95 to 14.95 in a matter of months. If only they would stop making people call in and just change everyone at once.

i heard sbc doesn't allow you to set-up a home network without their "home network kit" or something rather, is this true?

also, is yahoo dsl an always on connection? or do you have to "connect/login" like you would with dial-up service?

thanks

1. You can run a network with no problems

2. The modem has pppoe software built in as well as a webpage with lots of feedback about your line condition so there is no login unless you use there gay software.

PM me if you want a quick setup document of how to skip their cd installation.

3. If you have a router it's best to put the modem in bridged connection and let the router do the work.

SBC is NOT a good company. They take forever to set up DSL and service it, and their $200 cancellation fee is ridiculous. Why would I subscribe to SBC when I can get RoadRunner which is faster, cheaper after the 6 months, and has NO CONTRACT and fast service?

I 2nd that.
SBC is a corrupt company that makes fraudulent charges to customers. The ONLY thing that got their attention is when I got the STATE REGULATORY AGENCY involved. Then they quickly credited my account.
Pick another ISP, many have this same $15 deal.

Right, I've been with them around 5 years and pay too much, but I've got my original static IP. I'm sure this deal is for a changing IP. Is it worth it? I pay around $50/month with fees.

SBC can be a PITA, but I have to say, for the last 3+ years it's been extremely dependable. Once in a while I have a problem and I call them but it always seems to turn out that the problem was on my end. One of the things that really bugs me is that they won't let you change the username on your main account unless it's a matter of life and death (yes, I'm being flowery with words here). The main account has way more storage space and you can upload much bigger files. I tried to talk them into letting me change that name (because it gets spammed to death) but they won't do it. Pick your main username wisely and don't blow it - stay off the spam lists.

Question: Can I set up a site for myself with SBC?

a) use http://www.sbc.com/1495 with a promo code AM1612 and you will not have anything added to your account other then DSL of your choice ($14.95 or $24.95 deals) - it is a fully automated and reliable system (for NEW DSL customers only)
b) SBC dsl is Very reliable now days, for one, see http://www.broadbandreports.com/gbu ratings, I have had 2 accounts for a while (one dynamic and one static package) at my home office and it is 99.9% up and running
c) probably the only company offering offical online tech support for free and no BS http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/7930 on a user forum
d) for most, DSL is way cheaper then dial-up (lack of charges for local calls) and cable, or any other DSL provider for that matter
e) everybody has a horror story about one company or another, to say that SBC or any other Telco provider sucks in every respect is not a fair statement.
f) any way you slice it, there is not a better deal out there (well, I personally think that $99 instant credit vs current instant credit + $49.99MIR was a more attractive deal on the modem, but...)

again, if you need any answer regarding SBC DSL, there is no better site then:
SBC Midwest - Ameritech: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,am
SBC - Pacbell and Nevada Bell: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,pcb
SBC - Southwestern Bell: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,swbell
SBC Northeast - SNET: http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/ilec,snet

National ISPs/Telco ADSL Rating from http://www.broadbandreports.com/gbu

Guide...
Pacific Bell - SBC
Average rating: 3.26
Average price: $47
Average wait, order to live: 21 days
1re Sales information C+
2:Install Co-ordination C+
3:Connection reliability B

PacBell-SBC is at the BOTTOM of their ratings list.

Do youself a favor and check out the independent ISP (Regional ISPs). All of them have better ratings than PacBell-SBC. Take DSLExtreme for example... A- across the board and they also have the $15/month deal.

yea just get the login info. routers can do pppoe and its login. routers can be set to keep alive every 30 seconds.. so its basically always on. its just your ip changes everyonce in a while which is why pppoe isn't perfect. but unless you are serving files it doesn't affect you. as for routers. they dont know unless you tell anyways.

Unless they've changed something since the last 3 offers I used to discount my service, yes. Just call up Customer Service and indicate that you'd like to get in on the deal. They'll reset your contract and give you that deal for a year. After that you can cancel it if you want.

What kind of speeds can you expect?

I just tested my current SBC DSL at http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/

2005-07-11 12:57:45 EST: 2675 / 318
Your download speed : 2740056 bps, or 2675 kbps.
A 334.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 325732 bps, or 318 kbps.

I'm 6553 feet from the CO.

My charges for "Internet Services" (my DSL) on my last monthly bill was $47.47 for a static IP I've had for around 5 years. I'm not currently doing anything that would require a static IP, although I'd like to have a website. Should I change my plan? A little over a year ago I tried to initiate that. I had 1/2 the speed and the tech guy I talked to said I should keep my static IP, and that they were actually a bit overdue to do an unintiated speed upgrade on my service. While I was on the phone they doubled my speed.

As an exisitng cutomer, I had to "push" a bit to get the new deal. Just be persistant and talk about cable if necessary. It took me all of 5 minutes to get the deal. I opted for $120/year savings over higher speeds.

Good luck,
EH

Has anyone mentioned (I didn't read the whole thread), that Best buy is now offering a $75 BB gift card when you sign up for the $14.95 SBC DSL deal (in store only), which brings the monthly cost down to around $9 a month for the 12 month contract.
(12 X $14.95 - $75 BB gift card)

Expires July 31, but some stores are already out of stock on the free Siemens DSL Modem.

You can probably sell the gift card in the for sale/trade forum or on ebay for around $65.

Here's the tip. Bring up the word "cancel" if you are an existing customer. it will take about 15 sec for them to change your plan "since you are a valued customer". I basically said that earthlink offered me 3x the speed on cable for $30/mo no contract. They gave me a bunch of crap about i could get the deal if i went with "total connections" add this and that service blah blah. so i just did the math for her... so you're saying to save $12/mo on my DSL i have to add $13 in services i won't use? uh yeah i think i'll just go with earthlink.

hold please.

congratulations valued customer....$15/mo!

Could you swing the gift card if you're an existing member? I have a $47+ DSL plan with them at about 2.7 MBPS with static IP. I figure maybe I wouldn't much miss the speed being reduced to 1.5 MBPS in day-in/day-out Internet browsing and occasional downloads - can anyone speak to these issues? Saving $500 the first year alone is attractive. Thanks.

You have to sign up at a Best Buy store to get the $75 gift card and since you are already a existing customer I don't see how you can get the $75 gift card unless you cancel your current SBC account first.

This info is from Bestbuy.com so these's no mention of the in store only $75 gift card.

I called them up, and they refused to offer me a deal. I said I would cancel, and they offered me $20 a month. So I took it. My contract would have expired in September, but now I have a new one going until July of next year. I'm debating whether I made a smart move. Previously I was paying $27 a month.

Do they have anything like this for business zoned areas? Since I'm mostly at my aunt's lab, we have sbc here. I believe we're currently paying something like $60/month for 1.5/386k 5 static IP's. Would it be possible to switch over to the cheaper dynamic IP plan for where I'm at? In mountain view, CA area btw.

Thanks

Worked for me in Nevada, Reno area. I simply told the gal on the other end that my contract was expiring shortly, and unless I could get in on the deal then from a purely budget standpoint I was going to have to get my service elsewhere. She said, "I'm not even going to argue with that," and changed my rate.

she said there was a 30 day money back deal

you're a sucker, the 19.95 was an old promotion of april. you should be on 14.95 for this current promotion. I'm on 29.95 and debating whether to rerate to 24.95 or not. dunno if it's worth the hassle. already got it down to 58 a month including dsl service, dont think their too happy about lowering it anymore. if my memory serves, they will try to make you pay more say you need all distance crap, that's like another 35.00 on top of 15.00 standard telephone service fee. 49.95-15.00= 34.95. then again the taxes add up even more so it's more then 50. they'll get you to pay more one way or another! haha.
