I re-rated from 26.95 to 19.95 to 14.95 in a matter of months. If only they would stop making people call in and just change everyone at once.

i heard sbc doesn't allow you to set-up a home network without their "home network kit" or something rather, is this true?
also, is yahoo dsl an always on connection? or do you have to "connect/login" like you would with dial-up service?
thanks

SBC is a good company, both my parents work for them. Not to say that I'm biased, but I'm in Philadelphia right now and I've had Comcast and Verizon and they're such a friggin' hassle. I can't get SBC out here, so I'm pretty much stuck.
SBC is NOT a good company. They take forever to set up DSL and service it, and their $200 cancellation fee is ridiculous. Why would I subscribe to SBC when I can get RoadRunner which is faster, cheaper after the 6 months, and has NO CONTRACT and fast service?
Right, I've been with them around 5 years and pay too much, but I've got my original static IP. I'm sure this deal is for a changing IP. Is it worth it? I pay around $50/month with fees.Originally posted by: dsfunk
can existing customers get this deal?

1. You can run a network with no problems
2. The modem has pppoe software built in as well as a webpage with lots of feedback about your line condition so there is no login unless you use there gay software.
PM me if you want a quick setup document of how to skip their cd installation.
3. If you have a router it's best to put the modem in bridged connection and let the router do the work.
Unless they've changed something since the last 3 offers I used to discount my service, yes. Just call up Customer Service and indicate that you'd like to get in on the deal. They'll reset your contract and give you that deal for a year. After that you can cancel it if you want.Originally posted by: dsfunk

Has anyone mentioned (I didn't read the whole thread), that Best buy is now offering a $75 BB gift card when you sign up for the $14.95 SBC DSL deal (in store only), which brings the monthly cost down to around $9 a month for the 12 month contract.
(12 X $14.95 - $75 BB gift card)
Expires July 31, but some stores are already out of stock on the free Siemens DSL Modem.
You can probably sell the gift card in the for sale/trade forum or on ebay for around $65.
You have to sign up at a Best Buy store to get the $75 gift card and since you are already a existing customer I don't see how you can get the $75 gift card unless you cancel your current SBC account first.Originally posted by: Muse

Could you swing the gift card if you're an existing member? I have a $47+ DSL plan with them at about 2.7 MBPS with static IP. I figure maybe I wouldn't much miss the speed being reduced to 1.5 MBPS in day-in/day-out Internet browsing and occasional downloads - can anyone speak to these issues? Saving $500 the first year alone is attractive. Thanks.

Is there a way to try it out without signing a one year contract?

I called them up, and they refused to offer me a deal. I said I would cancel, and they offered me $20 a month. So I took it. My contract would have expired in September, but now I have a new one going until July of next year. I'm debating whether I made a smart move. Previously I was paying $27 a month.
