verizon is still better, they have higher speed plus users pay the same, 29.95.
3360/864
vs sbc 3008/512
higher upload means better latency for gaming and p2p.

Not to mention superior newsgroup servers.

Unfortunately verizon just isn't in my area in ca so SBC seems to be the only choice for me. Anyway, any comments on my last post about getting rerated in a business area?

thanks

I just called for my business... they deny the promotion for business customers which really is stupid. The best price i got for pro service was 36.99 compared to the quoted 39.99 + free modem after rebate.

Even the cable company charges an arm an a leg for business broadband at the same speed as residential broadband.

upload is very important, sbc is a conservative like comcast, like warner cable so they will leave it at 512kbps for at least another 5 years. goddamnit, I want faster upload could careless about downstream, be it 4mbit or 6mbit. don't most people in japan, europe have speed of at least 10mbit symmetrical connection for a lot less then what we pay here?@# it's not a technology limitation but rather a marketing thing to keep t1/t3 prices extremely high so the few who is rich can afford this kind of luxury!@# :disgust:

I get 4500ish down, 400 up for Comcast. Sustained 500+ KB/sec downloads easily.

$42.99 a month, but for SBC its a promotion price too. You can't compare like that. Otherwise you should be using Comcast's $19.99 for 6 months and the $42.99 afterwards, which makes it like $30/month for 1 yr vs SBC's $25 / month for 1 yr, but you get faster speeds with Comcast......

2476 down when your cable is rated 3mbps? I perform at or above rated speeds for Comcast. Go figure.

My contract would have expired in September, but now I have a new one going until July of next year. I'm debating whether I made a smart move. Previously I was paying $27 a month.

you're a sucker, the 19.95 was an old promotion of april. you should be on 14.95 for this current promotion. I'm on 29.95 and debating whether to rerate to 24.95 or not. dunno if it's worth the hassle. already got it down to 58 a month including dsl service, dont think their too happy about lowering it anymore. if my memory serves, they will try to make you pay more say you need all distance crap, that's like another 35.00 on top of 15.00 standard telephone service fee. 49.95-15.00= 34.95. then again the taxes add up even more so it's more then 50. they'll get you to pay more one way or another! haha.

I second that. They offered me the $20 deal too. I said just schedule a cancelation and *BAM*. $14.99 was the deal.

Got my first bill for the rerate. The bill shows $55 with a $44 credit. It seems a bit fishy but it is lower than before. How is everyone else's bill showing up? The total bill with 1 phone line is $32.48 this month. It was usually $55 for DSL and phone line. Looks good to me.

To be a late reply, I called SBC (Ameritech, INdiana) today to try and rerate our DSL service for my parents. They said we needed to have SBC Long Distance and 3 other extended services (i.e. Caller ID) to get the $15 a month. Since we currently have none of those, we didn't qualify for that price, and had to stick at our (previously rerated-to) $26. But they were willing to send us a new "free" modem since we've been like 5 year customers and still have an old Speedstream 5260, so the call wasn't worthless.

Looks like I was cheated by SBC. I checked my bills (I was out of town for the summer), and I've been paying the old $27 amount. My upcoming charge is also unchanged.

What should I do now? SBC said they would give me the new price, but they didn't. Should I call them up and demand that they give me a $7 credit for the last two months?

Hi, didn't wanna say anything in your post about your sig. but man why can't you understand, he was put in this situation by Clinton you know that and he is getting the blame for something that should have been done over 10 yrs ago. we were attacked and we are retaliating maybe not the best way but the only way we see fit. we can't sit back and just let this go on we had no choice just like WW2 when Japan attacked US should we have sit back and just let Hitler have his way no we were provoked and we retaliated. Yes we are in tough times but it's not Bush's fault he was handed a bum ecomomy and a war that couldn't be helped. Yes they said alot of reasons why we went over there but we have to look at the whole picture who else is gonna try to slow down terrorism nobobody but us cause we are the strongest most capable country on earth. I don't like some of Bush's war ideas but what else was he supposed to do? oh and about gas prices just don't buy cars or trucks that are gas hogs and won't have to fill up as often.People just need to understand that times change and so does the economy.

I dropped Socal RR for the $24.99 DSL and boy am I glad I did. Savings of $20.00 a month for the same DL speed is no brainer LOL.

While I currently have SBC PRO DSL and do agree that SBC has stable service and there dl and upload speeds are constant, id much rather prefer Verizon DSl over SBC for the simple fact that Verizon provides u with free unlimited newsgroup access. I currently pay 14.95 for this serivce from a seperate provider.

does anyone know if they have a military clause? I may be moving and would hate to get nailed with that fee.

Yes there are ads for $20-somehting alternatives but they all end up being $30-something after taxes and fees.

EDIT: $12.95 Metered landline. Only 20 Phone calls per month though.

For the record, SBC's low income charge is $5.44 per month. Folks need to get their facts straight.

Yeah, I think they call it Lifeline. I have it. But the charge for my fixed IP SBC is killing me. I'm paying around $54/month for the Lifeline + DSL. Last month my Lifeline totaled $5.75 and the charge for Internet services totaled $47.47. I'm thinking of springing for this before September, when presumably the deal is dead... My DSLreports.com speed test looks something like this:

Your download speed : 2740056 bps, or 2675 kbps.
A 334.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 325732 bps, or 318 kbps.

Will I notice much slower speeds if I downgrade to the 14.99 deal or the 24.99 deal? I don't game online, or download music or movies. Just more or less typical browsing with the occasional big file download, of course.

Speed, Schmeed....
From a gamers perspective, a any speed over 1Mbps is just fine. What I really care about is a low latency and RELIABLE connection. After that, I will take the best price and best rated provider as reported by Broadband Reports.

I've been happy for the first year and just called to have them extend my contract for a year and lower my price to $14.95 in 10 minutes, no hassle at all.

What does it come to after taxes and any other add-ons (fees, etc.)? Do you get over 1 Mbps? Does this have "low latency?" What IS low latency? One more question, please - is this as reliable as a static IP? If I were to order a static IP from SBC now, it would cost me a lot more than the $47.47/month I'm paying for mine.

When I went to downgrade a year and a half ago, I called them and got hooked up with a tech guy who told me I should keep my static IP, that I'd be better off with it. I don't know the issues. He boosted my speed from:

Your download speed : 1310517 bps, or 1310 kbps.
A 159.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 167968 bps, or 167 kbps.

to:

Your download speed : 2724661 bps, or 2724 kbps.
A 332.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 324859 bps, or 324 kbps.

while we were on the phone. And I kept my static IP. Looks like I can save around $25/month going for the 14.95 deal, though, if I act by tomorrow. Is it worth it? TIA!
