the one-year contract is actually a good thing because it "locks-in" your 26.xx$ price even after the year ends (regular price is something much higher).

i hate sbc and how they advertise though. the 26.xx$ price is only if you currently have or sign up for long distance + 2 other services from sbc. also, those commercials you're seeing for 20.xx$ price is only if you sign up for some ridiculously expensive phone package. of course both these prices don't include federal taxes, and some other charges that may or may not be applicable in your area.

you'd be better off ordering comcast hsi through staples or some other vendor and getting 1xx.xx$ rebates back in return. at least with them they give you the straight up price...

2 cents from an angry sbc customer.

P.S. also, don't trust their online tool thingy that says if you can get service from them or not. also, don't trust their phone reps who say you qualify for service. they said i was able to get dsl, so i cancelled my cable internet, then they call back the day it was supposed to be activated to tell me that it turns out i can't get dsl. go to hell SBC.

$26.95 for SBC DSL is not hot....

$21.95/month for DSL Extreme (great tech support) is hot.... 1yr contract, 1500/256-384, free gear.
http://www.dslextreme.com/

Extreme has a much higher rank on broadbandreports.com than sbc does....
I have had thier service for the past several months and have been very happy with it.

If their telemarketers contact you, don't trust anything they say. I asked them about whether I'd have to pay the punitive $200 early termination fee if I relocated to an area where the service was physically unavailable even though I wanted to continue. The telemarketers said that, "No", I wouldn't have to pay the $200 early termination fee. I later called SBC's billing department four times and finally found someone who seemed to know what she was talking about. She said that, "Yes", I would have to pay it, and even though I could try to appeal the charge, I'd probably still have to pay it. So beware.

That having been said, if you know that you're going to stay put for one year, it's a nice deal and the DSL itself isn't bad; my folks have it.

Just beware when you install the SBC software (which you have to do in order to activate the line), it also installs a bunch of spyware and such. I recomend that if you're using XP, make a restore point, activate the modem, then go back to that point (uninstalling the programs alone aren't sufficient- I actually had one of them come back after I removed it!)

I got this deal when I moved into my new place 4 months ago- so far, so good.

I couldn't agree with you more. Luckily, I used an older computer to set things up. But it still screwed up that computer. I'm going to have to reformat its HDD after the holidays.

'I've had SBC DSL for over a year and have do a clean install of my system several times and have yet to ever run the SBC crap. In fact with the latest equipment you just log into the router and set up your account there and simply plug it into your router or computer. The are many sites that will show you how to set up your email if you can't figure that out too. No need for ANY SBC Software.

They told me that when I called them on the phone..However, I was able to sign up online and not order anything else from them, so right now I'm getting just dsl from them. I don't care for sbc at all, but the service has been good and $27 was the cheapest thing going when I signed up.

yes, you do have to sign up for an additional service from SBC for the 19.99$ price... which is complete BS how they advertise it on TV or on advertisements because they don't mention that "little" fact even in the fine print.

read my crap-on-SBC post above.

sounds like their Network 1 uses SBC's lines anyway... so no luck for me as I'm a no-go with SBC to start off with...

$27 for DSL + Local Line

$20 for DSL + Local Line + Long Distance 19.99 all distance

Note: Upload speed is much better at 256-384 now it's not 128 anymore.

Sadly that $21.95 is partial because they have a $100 activation fee which works out to $8. So that is about $30 a month.

https://secure.dslextreme.com/terms/termsdsl.asp
"5. SETUP AND ACTIVATION FEES. Upon entering into this Agreement, a non-refundable setup fee (sixty dollars ($60.00) in the case of SBC and Verizon Subscribers, and two hundred and fifty dollars ($250.00) in the case of a Covad Subscriber) will apply to all Monthly Subscribers other than MCI Subscribers and Annual Subscribers who automatically become Monthly Subscribers at the expiration of their initial twelve (12) month term. Upon entering into this Agreement, a non-refundable activation fee of one hundred dollars ($100.00) will apply to all MCI Subscribers. Upon entering into this Agreement, a non-refundable activation fee of one hundred dollars ($100.00) will apply to all Annual Covad Subscribers."

So if you have a 1-yr contract, no setup fee (typical). However, Covad & MCI line users get stuck with a $100 fee.

Verizon's user are blessed with 29.95 deal for pro package, speed is far better then SBC's expert pro, 3364/864 so you would get about 350kb/s, 88kb/sec vs 315kb/s, 53kb/s
66 percent faster upload speed, a great bonus too and 10 percent faster download. I'd dump SBC over any days if their are cheaper faster alternative.

I think that I read in an SBC ad that the normal prices for SBC DSL was $29.99 for 384Kbps-1.5Mbps/128Kbps and $39.99 for 1.5-3Mbps/384Kbps. If you add the price difference over a one year period, it comes out to about $36 a year difference! I'd rather pay full price and have the security of no 1 year contract than have to deal with a stupid $200 early termination fee!

Think of it this way...[SBC Sales Associate] "Congragulations, you pay $26.95 per month for service! Throw in an extra $36 and we'll tear up your 1 year contract!!!"

Can anyone confirm this?

If that is true you should report it to your state's Attorney General and office of Consumer Affairs

I'm interested in hearing more about that too. I wonder if you get a free DSL modem if you just go month to month at $30/month? Would they have an activation fee?
