i was wondering if anyone had any experience with the home portal system that sbc is offering right now. They offer a 2wire wireless dsl modem that also serves as a router. if anyone can share experiences it would help a lot.
I haven't looked at their recent deals but in the past they were not only charging you a pretty high price for the equipment, they were also charging you $10 a month for the "service" they were giving you. If you are ignorant or lazy about this stuff and need the tech support, the extra charges may be worth it (but the mere fact that you are posting on anandtech suggests you may be equal to the challenge!)
EDIT: after looking at the SBC offer, I think the model that you get with the deal is the 1000HW which includes: ADSL modem, 1 ethernet port, 1 usb port, 1 HPNA port, wireless B access point. Doesn't sound worth $50 to me. You can get a wireless G router for $50 and it'll have 4 ethernet ports. Plus if you buy your own wireless router, you can use it if you decide to switch ISP to say your cable company.
As stated, the offered router is a modem-router combo with a home phoneline networking capability, a USB connection, an Ethernet connection, and the wireless hub. The HPN runs back over the same line that the DSL signal comes in on. Probably would not work very well on a splitter setup, the latest self-install microfilters look to have a jack for the HPN (or DSL modem.)
I installed one a few months ago for a friend. The modem feeds the daughter's computer via the Ethernet and the two parents' computers via a wireless-USB adapter. The desktop is rock solid. The laptop forgets that it is on a wireless LAN every few months.
It's wireless-b.
FWIW, I would go with the standard modem and a wireless-g router.
