you do NOT need that software if you are running XP...

IF your running 2000 you just need the PPPoE software...nothing else.

In XP, 2000 or 98, ME, the PPPoE software supplied by the ISP or the one built into XP doesn't do the MTU's correctly.... PPPoE has MTU's of 1484 bytes and not 1500 bytes... Use RASPPPoE and it will work better than the one built into XP and the driver is smaller and more efficient.

So, if your unhappy with the service, your just screwed.

There may be no trial period, but I remember reading in the fine print that you've got 30 days to accept the license agreement. If you don't agree, it seems you can cancel everything without an early termination fee.

If you could find that, it would be great. However I asked the rep, and she put me on hold to check. She said once your in, your in.

Good thought, neo229. I'll have to read that portion and pay specific attention to the "rental/lease/purchase" agreement for that dsl modem. I'd hate to bail on the year agreement and have them charge a hundred dollars for a modem for a month. BTW, anyone having the service, does the modem become the sub's after the year?

BroadbandDaily has been reporting a global surge in trying to market broadband this year. The carriers have their excess capicity sitting there and believe they have yet to come close to saturation. All they need to do is hit the 20s/month range and they'll have all the subs they need. Tier their service levels if they must to avoid having too many, but get serious. Applications will come if the subs are there.

Any historians remember when the signicant number of sub-increase occurred in the cable TV industry? ...and after the subs signed up, the carriers doubled the rates by increasing them a modest 4-7%/year

Is there any maximum upload or download limit with SBC? Can I hook up multiple pc's with one connection using 2 different modems on each pc? I ask this because I have a spare dsl modem and have phone jacks galore in my house.

having 2 modems won't matter. There is a cap on the upload. If you are signing for this deal, they'll cap you around 128 or so for upload. The download will really depend on your distance from the CO. They are supposed to guarantee you 384-1.5mbit.

You can share the connection with a bunch of computers by using a router... tho the more you have the slower it will be.

I haven't been disappointed so far. good constant speed of up to 1.2mbit.

You can do that, but only one modem can be online at the same time. You'll have to turn one off before you can turn the other one on or else it won't sync with the line.

The better way is to get a router with a hub.

I already have Comcast cable modem service and it is hella fast. However, for $30 a month I could get another connection and I could get the Nexland Pro Turbo800. Using both connections at once. That would be pretty sweet. Have to see if I can swing it.

Just got my package from UPS. Pretty cool. Alota of equipment in ther for free, with all the filters and the modem. Granted I doubt the fitlers cost much to make but still cool. Just a few months ago they wer still charging 200$ for this setup aroudn here.

I have a question, They said that the service wouldnt start until the 17th. Do they have to physically activate it at my home, or do they just turn it on, like cable?

If you could find that, it would be great. However I asked the rep, and she put me on hold to check. She said once your in, your in.

This is the clause that I was referring to:
"IMPORTANT NOTICE: The installation materials provided through the self-installation kit or by the service technician will contain the Terms of Service for SBC Yahoo! DSL. You should review these Terms of Service before installation by clicking on the Terms of Service icon below or by visiting http://sbc.yahoo.com/terms/. You will need to accept these Terms of Service in order to use the DSL Internet service and continue with the installation process. If you decline to accept the Terms of Service, you will need to call 1-877-SBC-DSL5 to cancel the service within 30 days after service activation to avoid service charges and installation fees."

Since the termination fee is agreed to within the contract, I would think they'd have a hard time trying to get you to pay it if you cancel the service based on the notion that you don't agree to the contract.

There is also this clause in the contract:
"If the Service cannot be provided at the lowest synch rate in the range, either you or SBC may disconnect the Service without a termination charge to you."

So at least you can canel without a penalty if the performance is poor.

As already stated, there is a 128K speed cap on uploads, however there is no hard cap on the amount that can be downloaded or uploaded within a month like some cable companies have.

Well thats the only reason I wuld cancel so thats fine. That means that if I don't get at least 384kbps then I can cancel right?

Anybody know if I can renew my contract with SBC for one more year at $30. I sighned up one year ago for the 768 plan for $30 dollars. It was faster then dial up but at only 80 KB donload max compared to 300+ cable in college it was quite slow. Cable is now available in my area now but slower then in college and my SBC contract will expire soon. I can upgrade to the 1500 for the same price now but it will go to $50 in a few weeks so it is not worth it over cheeper cable. But if I gan one more year at $30 for 1500 and keep my email I would be happy.

Thanks

I did upgrade to 1.5 down and it should go in effect in a few days. But since my price will go to $50 very soon the 1500 doesn't look to good compared to options like cable. One more year at $30 would be good though.

Does anyone know how they activate it?

Is it like cable where they turn it on at where they are, or do they actually need to physically do something at my apartment?

For that matter, how does cable activate? do they jsut tell their DNS server to lease my modem an IP?

How is DSL different fromt that?

I have no idea of the details, but no visit was required at my house. However, my wiring was physically checked by a PacBell tech several years ago for the FreeDSL deal, what a joke that was. They may do something at your apartment phone box, but you will not be hassled. I know very little, but I think that cable is activated by the MAC address of your modem. DSL with PPPoE is similar to dialup, you have a login and password to an account.

Originally posted by: aperry A few things here from my past experiences (I had SBC Yahoo DSL and moved to an area where it is not available yet):
  1. If you are running XP, you do not need their glut of software that loads. Just go to here for instructions.
  2. If you are not running XP, you need to use their software to install (I think). Then, delete all of the extraneous garbage except for DSL Connection Manager.
  3. If you are a Usenet junkie like me, and want to use your own reader to read Usenet, their server blows. They are missing many groups. They claim that the reason for this is that they don't carry groups that appear to be duplicates. They will add a group for you if you ask (and can convince them that it has unique content), but I found it to be severely lacking.
  4. If you already have a Yahoo mail account (this includes @rocketmail.com and others too), DO NOT combine your accounts. If you do, and later drop SBC Yahoo, you will have to pay a monthly access charge to read your previously free email account. I believe the charge is $9.95 per month.
Even with all this said, $29.95 is a good price, and if it were available at my house, I would probably do it. Cox charges me $39.95 per month, plus I have to have their minimum package ($15.95 plus tax) which I do not even use, so I am paying nearly $60 a month for cable-modem access... :disgust:
Heck with software...just head over to the Belkin thread and pick up a cheap router.
You must be a cable user. Please advise how I can connect to DSL without the connection manager or by using the instructions posted by aperry?
????? I've been using DSL for two years now. Nearly every router supports PPPoE. You just put in your username and password in the setup screen, plug your DSL modem into the WAN port, your PC into a switch port, and off you go.

Thanks. I knew about the router settings, just never sat down to think about what was actually going on. I just went to DSL and PPPoE is very new to me.

I got the 1500/256 plan for $39.99. It's listed on their webpage.
