It takes about 1 week from the time you call in or order online, till you get everything setup.

Usually less than a week, because whenever they ship you your modem and filters, that's the day it'll most likely synch up and work.

I ordered and extened mine with the 1.5/256 for $40 a month. Works great only took a couple days for them to crank my speed up (had 128 up before). I get very close to the max since I'm so close to the central office (well remote extension central office especially for our new development anyway).

Does the $29.95 month include tax and other surcharges?
No, it does not.
I think it does. My $50 a month from before included the tax and surcharges, so it was like $47 and $3 in other stuff.

80kb for 768? Thats pretty darn slow for 768
Its actually fairly close to what you should get. 768 kiloBITS per second, divided by 8 to get kiloBYTES per second gives 96k. Take out 10% for overhead (yeah overhead is usually lower) and you get close to 90k. So 80k is giving him about 700 kbit service. He probably could have requested them to check the speed though, and gotten it up a tiny bit, but maybe he was a ways from the CO.

No, it does not.

What kinds of other taxes and surcharges are there?

My basic SBC phone bill comes up to $24.xx including federal taxes, customer charges, city taxes, etc., Will there be taxes on $29.99 if I take the DSL?

I am intersted in signing up for this for my apartment with 6 other roomates, just a few questions if anyone can help me out that would be great,

What would be the best option to split this up for 6 computers? With 3 being upstairs and 3 downstairs.

I want to sign up under dell to recieve the rebate but the do not have the basic plus which is 384-1.5 where as if I went directly to SBC site they have it listed. Both are $30 a month

Thanks

just sign up via SBC...$30/month...buy a router and a switch. 3 to router's switch, 3 to switch connected to router (speed really won't be affected).

I finally got around to calling in and asking for a price reduction on my existing Pacbell DSL service. I've had it since they first started offering it in LA, and I'm currently paying 49.95. They switched me to the 29.95 with no hassle whatsoever, just the 1 yr commitment. The CSR said the offer expires 6/30, so if you're going to do it, act now.

If you are having any difficulties with tech service, or would like your line uncapped, post a message in the SBC forum at dslreports.com.

They have 3 SBC techs who work full time fielding customer issues there, and have had success resolving a speed issue (from about 300k download to about 650k). It took a while, and required several tech visits to my home, but the forum tech (toaster) hung in there with me and made it happen.

I tried to order DSL for my parents but since their alarm is tied in with the phone line and the potential DSL line, they need a tech to come out and put a filter on the phone box for $200. Is there any way around this? $200 is a little too much for adding a filter. Thanks

Get a wireless router and go with wired downstairs and wireless upstairs. If you can pull a cable upstairs, you could get a regular router and put the access point upstairs.

SBC used to be Prodigy, but yahoo bought them, just saying that in case it means anything to anyone.

This hardly matters, but SBC used to be Prodigy is a litte incorrect. Pacbell used to use Prodigy as an ISP is more correct. SBC provides the pipe, Yahoo is the provider.

Its about the same. I dont have charter, but have a friend on the other side of town that does.

I wouldnt switch and go through the hassle for 5$ a month. However, I WOULD switch to the 384 - 1.5 for 29$ a month

I consistently (always) get 1.3mbs download

Actually, that's not right either. The way it works is SBC aka PacBell, Southwestern Bell, Southern New England Network, Nevada Bell provides the pipe while their Internet division is the ISP. Prodigy took over the ISP portion. SBC purchased Prodigy I guess. I don't really know if Yahoo is the actual provider as it's more of a marketing thing but one thing is Prodigy took over the news servers and all the binary newsgroups were gone.

PacBell dropped MP3 and most binary groups about two years ago. Their performance was so bad they were of no use anyway. If you want binaries, you'll have to use another provider. Check to see if the ISP used by your employer has a ng server. I VPN to work from home and remote-control my work machine to get files after hours .

Re speed: I'm getting reliable 1.3mbps d/l via my basic (was 49.95, now lowered to 29.95) DSL package. I think I'm less than a mile from the switching office.
