If you have SBC DSL already and are paying more, call now and get the $29.95 per month price. This works for BUSINESS accounts also. I changed my business account to $29.95 per month from $49.95 per month....same Basic Plus package (128K up 1.5M down), same everythingm, just $20 a month less. No need to call and threaten to quit...simply ask them for the promotional rate.

I got in on this deal for my parents but I would have to say SBC is the sh*ttiest DSL provider I have ever used in my life. It disconnects at least twice a day at random and sometimes takes more than an hour to come back on. Called SBC every night for a week, they came and tested the lines and replaced the DSL modem, and its gotten slightly better but it still happens. I'd gladly pay the $50/mo that I'm paying for earthlink just to not deal with the bullsh*t that SBC puts me through.

Im using Ameritech's news server and have full access to Alt.binaries groups. Preformance is actually pretty good...nearly as good as Supernews. They must use different news servers in different parts of the country.

Ummm, I don't think it's the service, I think it's your line. This is the same thing when people say "Soandso's dialup ISP stinks because I get disconnected every 15 minutes!!!" You're probably too far from the CO to get the speed you were rated at and you keep losing sync.

And honestly...Earthlink may be just reselling SBC accounts anyway. There's normally only one (maybe two in larger cities) DSL provider in an area, and other companies purchase accounts from that provider to resell.

no the lines been tested twice by SBC techs. They say its fine so my losing sync, if they know what they're doing, has to be a problem on their end. The CO is actually also only about 3500 ft away, so it should be just fine.

Earthlink is actually routed through mindspring servers and Covad lines rather than SBC, at least where I am.

How do you get full access to those groups?

Fritzo: I don't get the connection -- are you saying that you get free access to some news server other than pacbell.net as a result of your SBC DSL subscription? If you have a separate subscription to a Usenet server, that's an unrelated issue. Please clarify!

SBC uses the same POS servers throughout their region. Content and speed may vary slightly, but its performance is nowhere near any commercial provider. Yes, there are a handful of alt.binaries that display in your groups list. However, any decent group is E-M-P-T-Y. If you somehow find a large binary group that you frequent, the completion rate will be about 30%. Thirty percent? Yes, 30% even though they have almost no F**kin' groups.

Vaporize -- yep for the $29.95 you get DSL ISP and unilimited dialup ISP. You are supposed to use the dialup when away from your DSL connection, but my daughter uses the dialup all day everyday at her house....I use the DSL at mine. No problems for the last year and a half or so. I get a great and reliable connection....apparently some others here dont.

I signed up for DSL when SBC was Ameritech in our area. My news server is like news.ameritech.net or something to that effect.

Great deal. If you are hesitant about signing up, do so. SBC is the Newegg of the DSL providers. Great customer service both online and on the phone. I have had some problems with my old DSL modem, but they are going to send me a new one free with the twelve month commitment!

Then you just can't easily setup your own website using your home computer without static IP address!?

I have had SBC DSL in California - Pacific Bell - for more than 2 years. Service is almost always up - maybe an hour or two of downtime total that I have noticed.

Whenever an issue comes up, I contact one of the PacBell techs who monitor their forum on Broadband Reports Dot Com - http://www.dslreports.com/forums/9

They seem to have a fair amount of pull, and are able to enter work orders. For example, my service was capped at about 350 kbps, due to some line issues. Several techs came out and were supposedly unable to figure out why. toaster2k persisted on my behalf. It seemed that my phone line runs several hundred yards beyond my house. It seems that this results in is some type of ghosting effect, affecting the quality of my DSL signal. Phone companies do not like to cut such lines, as it reduces their ability to use this line in the future, at another house down the street, should I move or cancel the service. Toaster was able to convince the local tech to obtain authorization to cut the line past my termination, which allowed them to uncap and double my speed. Still not the 1.5 mbps advertised, but very consistent, with virtually no downtime - works for me.

I have experience with both SBC/Yahoo and RoadRunner. Some notes for you fence riders that have both as an option:

-Both seem to have specials for a few months before you ramp up to the normal about $45/mo rate. You do realize that this 29.95 price is only for the first year, right? I just saw a similar new contract special for RR, but I don't remember the details.

-You need an active landline for DSL! I hate paying for landlines when I have a cell phone with a huge number of minutes, no long distance, and no telemarketers. That's just silly to pay for a landline as well.

-DSL requires the login process, while cable doesn't. It just works. If you have a router, this is not an issue.

-RoadRunner has FAST newsgroups, with most binary groups availible. I pulled in files at the full pipe speed of 2mbps. It was like straight from the RR server to my house, I guess. The RR newsgroups are the fastest downloading I have ever seen on my computer, period. I've downloaded 200+ gb from the newsgroups.

-SBC will issue you a new IP as often as twice a day. I had the same RR IP for *months*. If you are planning on running your own (web/mail) server, remote desktop, etc, you'll appreciate that. To others, it won't matter at all.

-If you get SBC, PLEASE listen to Almighty1 and do NOT install the crap software. It is not needed and is bad for system performance.

So I'm biased towards cable. I see it like this:
Have a landline and a router: Choose either.
Don't have a landline or a router, plan on using newsgroups or a server: Choose RR cable (or any cable)
