Here's a dilemma.

Do I use the drivers that are available on the Microsoft Windows Update page (who claim to be newer judging by the version numbers) or do I use the ones released by Creative?

It seems common that the only "compatible" drivers for use with XP are those on the XP. But I have a new X-Gamer 5.1 not in use because of the difficulty SBLive! cards have with Via chipsets. Dont count on new drivers to fix hardware incompatibilities. Let us know how your SB Live! works with which drivers.

I don't plan on going back to Windows 2000.
What do you mean by "compatible"? Has one driver or the other been giving problems to other users?

Sorry about the cross post, I edited it.
Not many hardware manufacturers have independently released XP drivers, but have instead submitted altered drivers to Micro$oft for XP to at least offer minimal support for their hardware. Take HP for example. None of their printers/scanners from the win9x/NT era especially parallel port devices have complete support with XP cdrom drivers. I lost the most favorite features of my Desk Jet when I switched to XP. XP doesnt want to install my old drivers, so I'm stuck with a software printer emulator to maintain my printer functionality. Because of this, HP will be busy building new printers as Micro$oft has deemed the older ones obsolete.

If you use the native XP drivers (instead of "updating" to the ones available on various web sites) it will make this old news....

the 686B:soundblaster issues were resolved several versions of 4-in-1 drivers ago and most certainly do not exist within the

native XP Via MoBo drivers.

as to the sound card, make sure you delete any and all remnants of a soundblaster installation prior to installing your XP
(if you did an upgrade).

you can use the (updated) windowsXP natives or you can use the last release available on the soundblaster website from creative
to drive your sound card.

but again you must delete all remnants of "Liveware" and the windows98 soundblaster drivers for proper operation.

Try the Creative drivers... they work for me. I am running Win2K but the drivers are the same. If you are having problems... un-install the card and the drivers and install the Windows drivers instead. It is that easy!

The Microsoft drivers won't have features like EAX or A3D available to use. The drivers from Creative do and they work perfectly on Windows XP for me. I have an Epox 8k7a which is the AMD 761 chipset. Try the creative ones and follow the steps stated in the previous posts if you did an upgrade!

The drivers included in WindowsXP caused me problems in specific games (Red Faction, for example). Creative now offers SB Live! drivers for WinXP from their site. These drivers work perfectly with my system, and I would reccomend downloading them. Oh, for the record, I'm running a VIA KT266 chipset, and I have no problems with my SB Live.
