not trying to thread crap, but make sure you read this:

The PowerEdge SC420 is ideal for your first server & network.
Note: For server use only; CANNOT BE USED AS A DESKTOP.
Dell does not support the use of a graphics card on the SC420.

Is it PCIe?

If thats so, you just need to put it in there. ;p

They don't "officially" support it. It would probably eat into their desktop sales (like the SC400) if they did. You can do it though. Just have to cut out the dividers. Works just fine afterwards

Give yourself a dremel and 20 minutes.

I think HeartSurgeon did it. PM him and ask

"Nerve wracking" seems to be a common description of the process though (think your first time installing a heatsink on an unprotected core (AXP, duron, etc) ).

Had to order one... oh how I wish I could justify it =)
Weird, I ordered one last night, and it still hasn't shown up.

Nasty. I'll stick with refurb'd 4700 Dimensions.

Any idea on how feasible it would be to swap a cheap LGA775 motherboard and sell the Dell one? Cheapest PCIe one on Newegg is $80, but cheapest AGP is $49...

Very tempting, but I'll pass this time. I just ordered two Dell desktops not too long ago.

I?ve modded the PCIe slot in a couple different SC420's now. I've got it down to a 5 minute job with great looking/working results. Two key things are placing something in the slot to protect the pins (I use a small piece I cut out of on old ISA card) and use the proper Dremel bit. The "Dremel 113 engraving cutter" is the perfect size to cut the dividers in the munged PCIe slot.

edit:Pic I googled of the 113 dremel tool.

This stuff works great in 4700's and 8400's, probably is fine for the SC420, too.

Edit: BTW, you cannot mix ECC and NonECC memory, and the SC420 will come with ECC memory. I'd recommend selling off the ECC and go with NonECC, it's much cheaper.

Thanks OP, I am going to replace the 400SC at work with this 420SC, and will have RAID 1, and two 80GB SATA hard drives. Much better server solution with the RAID.
The 400SC will make a great 'new' desktop for my associate. I love these Dell Servers!
(have three of the 400SCs, using one at home right now)

If you have the cash, the 1850 is an OUTSTANDING deal. 1u rackmount case, Dual Xeon 3.0ghz 2mb cache, 1gb of ram, and two 73gb Cheetahs. All for ~1150.

I must have missed this. Where do you see it? 2-73GB SCSIs and 2 Xeons alone would be over $1500 (without a pretty Dell case).

don't think you'll be able to swap out motherboards and keep the case, dell use custom parts, and u won't be able to fit any other motherboard in here unless it's a dell (from the 4700 or 8400 series)
