Scala

Really cool language. I was just getting into professional development when Java took off and I get the same feeling about Scala as I did with Java in '96. With Java being Oracle's property I can really see Scala taking off as its successor eventually.

Anyone else using it?

qsort in Scala example:

def qsort: List[Int] => List[Int] = {
  case Nil => Nil
  case pivot :: tail =>
    val (smaller, rest) = tail.partition(_ < pivot)
    qsort(smaller) ::: pivot :: qsort(rest)
}

Not everything is that scary looking as you can choose the degree of functional programming you implement (or don't use functional programming at all).

Interesting. Can you tell us, to the extent that you can, how scala programs fit into the architecture there?

Currently, I'm only aware of mobile using node.js.

We mostly used Java here at LinkedIn and Scala is highly compatible with Java as they both compile down to Java bytecode. Scala code should be able to call any Java code and Java code should be able to call most Scala code. It pretty much boils down to developer preference as to which is used (just if using Scala, don't put anything incompatible with Java in a public interface). That being said, a vast majority of our code base is written in Java.
