From zin's NY article...

“Yes, sometimes it’s the common New Yorker,” said Councilwoman Carlina Rivera, who introduced the bill. “But many times, especially in my district, these are landlords who are taking rent-regulated units out of the housing stock because they’d rather get a lot more money per night.”

Those damned capitalists. Hang 'em all.

rephrased: anyone who owns housing that is rented out ( unless you are my husband) is no good scum for trying to support themselves.

another way: yes, we are screwing the average new yorker, but its ok, because i am a card carrying member of the socialist party, and i believe all housing and business should be controlled by me and my Realestate mogal husband.

My first impulse is that a guy ought to be able to do whatever he feels like with his property.

However, there are benefits of having a high percentage of home ownership in your neighborhood. Renters who know that they have only months before they are on to the next job and the next location don't have the same appreciation of getting along with their neighbors as those with a long term commitment in the community as well as financially.

A nearby neighbor Airbnb'd his place to some young folks for the weekend. It was a perfect summer night to sleep with the windows open and they were out hanging on the front porch. I totally get being young, on vacation, hanging with your friends on a spectacular evening. Add in some alcohol and things can get pretty loud.

All in all, pretty harmless, but I doubt that many of us would hang out on our front porch, getting loud and rowdy, keeping our neighbors up at night. Some of us might, but that also seems to be a self correcting type of behavior, one way or the other.

It was reported that Rivera and husband, Jamie Rogers, lived in a Section 8 apartment. The annual income limit for a family of two is $61,050. After deducting Rivera’s salary, in order to be under that cut off, Rogers would have had to earn less than $20,000 a year, which many thought unlikely considering his real estate holdings and father’s net worth.[6] The New York Post, which broke the story, says Rivera deleted online photos of Rogers on his father’s yacht.[7]

FWIW its even a noticeable difference with normal renters and owners. Owners have a commitment to property upkeep and keeping the value of the neighborhood up that renters just don't. For the AirBNB example that might happen once in a blue moon with an owner, but it could be a weekly occurrence with short term rentals.
