Have a very old laptop, a Compaq Presario 1670, with a damaged 4.3GB hard drive. My parents use it to dial onto the Internet and look up stuff (they don't download anything). This old AMD 350MHz 96MB RAM laptop with Windows ME and a 56K modem is completely adequate for their needs. (They say they don't want a big computer taking up alot of space)
The hard drive has lots of bad sectors, but it is still usable. When scandisk encounters the bad sectors, usually it can mark it bad and move one. But sometimes it will encounter a bad sector and get stuck. The program will just sit there forever making clicking noises. After what seemed like hours of work, I was able to create a good 1GB partition and install Windows ME, but there is less than 300MB of free space.
So my question is this- is there a util that can scan for bad sectors without getting stuck? I'd like to recapture as much good space on this hard drive as I can.
