ScanDisk not working....help please..

ScanDisk Error checker and Defrag. start, get to 1%, and then start over again. This keeps happening over and over. Not working via the Maintenance Wizard either. Does anyone know what could be wrong, and how I can get them to work again? Thanks in advance.

use the task manager (press ctrl alt del) and close every program except systray and explorer... turn off all screen savers, hibernation, power saving, etc... and then try again... and don't use the computer while its going

sometimes the task manager won't show *everything* thats running in the b/g (i.e. a virus or trojan). about 2 yrs ago, i had the same problem... couldnt get scandisk or defrag to run. my computer wouldnt shutdown either. it was just freeze on the "windows is shutting down" screen, but never fully go down. had to manually power off and back on. turns out had a virus that snuck itself into nv ram every time the computer was restarted, so even if u deleted the virus, then rebooted, it was back again constantly. had to clear nv ram in bios and clear every instance of it on harddrive (about 100 of them).

this prolley isnt yer problem, but worth checking into anyway. just go to start, run and type in msconfig. go to the startup tab and look at all of the items that are set to run at startup. uncheck anything that looks suspicious, reboot, and see if its rechecked.

I had this problem a few weeks ago. It was suggested here that I download the free tool called "EndItAll 1" found at PC Magazine.com. Sorry, I don't know how to link. This will turn everything off except what you need to scandisk. Back to normal after reboot.
If this dosen't work try reinstalling your OS. That's what eventually worked for me. Something in scandisk must have gotten deleted somehow???
