Scared to play horror games...

Is it just me? I tried to play Amnesia alone when it came out and I couldn't. I was too scared. I tried to play Metro 2033 alone and when I got outside and started to see the creatures I was too scared and I quit. I played Dead Space and quit 15 minutes in. I just can't do it, I get way to immersed in the game and I get way to scared to proceed. The only way I can actually play the game is if I take my self out of it and just play it without caring about anything, which takes away from the enjoyment of the game.

Crazy I am an adult male who turns into a little girl when I play these things. Like scary movies don't bother me I don't see why games effect me so much.

I knew a guy like that. I don't know, some people are just affected more by the idea of horror. There's been only one game that ever really got to me, and that was Silent Hill when I was younger.

It sucks though because I watch videos of others playing and it seems like such an amazing experience to be scared while playing a game and hiding or fighting etc... yet I just cant do it.

No, it's not just you. Some people are really good at immersing themselves into stuff like that, whether it's games, books, or film.

I tend to be that way as well. Scary games really get to me.

I only made it an hour or so into Outlast before I just quit. It was making me physically ill to continue and I just had to stop.

I got a similar feeling playing Underhell, but I managed to get through it.

Maybe try kind of easing yourself in?

I know it sounds heretical, but try leaving the lights on, or have some music playing that you like, or the tv on in the corner. Little things that keep you from becoming TOO immersed in the scariness.

As you get more comfortable with it, try removing one of those things at a time.

I've tried that, these games make me feel paranoid lol. Always looking behind my back and corner of my eye.

I'm a mixed bag.

Years ago when System Shock 2 was first out, I started playing it and the first time I ran into a hybrid (the zombie types) and he swung a wrench at me and screamed "I'm sorry!" I got pretty freaked out. I shut the game off and didn't finally go back to it and finish it for like a year. I was probably about 20 years old at that time.

Metro 2033 had some very scary parts like with the shadow ghosts, that freaked me out. But, I was able to keep at it once I got going and even play in the pitch black at night... with headphones, nobody else awake. That's how I prefer. Thief: The Dark Project, one of my favorite games, had a very scary level or two, but I was able to overcome those.

Dead Space 1 and 2 are very scary but I was okay, I was scared by them but I was able to play to completion and enjoy it.

Then there's like Outlast, which I only got very briefly into before I put it aside. I want to return to it, but it seems like it's going to be very hard for me to make it through... very hard. Maybe I just need to get over the hump.

Amnesia I've had the same sort of experience with. Not as bad as Outlast... but I'm struggling with completing that, let alone the sequel.

It sucks because ideally I'd love to play these type of games with Oculus Rift and everything, but although I am not as wussy about it as some, I am certainly wussier than others. This thread may inspire me to MAN UP and take another crack at Outlast. We'll see.

Horror games scare the hell out of me too, but that's why they're my favorite genre. I absolutely love horror games. They affect you on a deeply psychological level in a way that no other kind of game can.

They don't scare me, but man do I love them. One of my close friends is a totally pussy. He stops playing any game if it has a scary/creepy part. Like Stalker, got to the underground bunker, he walked in and was like nope! Bioshock, when the splicers are going all nuts when you first encounter then too. I lol so much, he refuses to even watch the trailer for Amnesia and wont even add Outlast to his PS+ account even though it is currently free.

Most times I get to feel pretty manly because my gf has a hell of a time with freaky movies or games.

Compared to you I'm probably a pretty big puss, I mean as I said I usually do alright with most stuff but Outlast and Amnesia have been tough for me. I am resolved to eventually triumph over them though.

Her though? Wow... she has to play *Skyrim* with the lights on because the draugr and the dungeons freak her out. To me Skyrim doesn't even move the needle of freakiness.

Fallout 3 freaked her out. That game actually does have some legitimately freaky parts though, like the ghouls in the sewers. She didn't play it, just watched me play a bit.

She could NEVER touch Outlast... or Amnesia... or a Dead Space game... I think even something like Half-Life 2 would just be too much for her. We have a cat and she can't even be in the same room with the cat while the light's off.

F.E.A.R

S.T.A.L.K.E.R

first person Diablo reboot

You've inspired me to take another shot at S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - I played only a little bit of the original near the time it came out. Lost interest. My recent very high levels of enjoyment for Metro 2033 and Last Light are part of why I'm going to give it another chance. I also am installing a graphics overhaul for it that looks good.

Same with F.E.A.R. - Only fiddled with that very briefly. Going to try it again.

As for first person Diablo? I'd certainly be interested to try that.

:O

That bunker is the creepiest thing I have ever played in a video game. After I had went through it once, later in the game I thought I would return to grab stuff I left behind. I got part way in and just got a creepy feeling and decided to just forget about going further.

Other than that, I have had nothing more than a few frights playing games. FEAR was pretty good for that.

The one office building Dunmuir(or something that begins with a D)was quite creepy.

Horror movies don't scare me; they entertain me if they are lucky.

However, I started playing Metro last light last night. It's not that it's scary to me, but its setting is so damn good the game is just bleak. I just got out of the prison and I am going to give it a bit longer but I can't play an entire game like this I don't think. The environments are excellent but it's kind of a bit soul crushing.

The Dunwich Building, which is a reference to H.P Lovecraft's "The Dunwich Horror" apparently.

Hmm I think it gets better in that regard I think you should stick with it. Really.

It's not unusual. I'm very much like that, I can get lost in the depth of games and really put myself in the position of the character, and it makes scary games quite terrifying at times, I'm trying to play Outlast at the moment and it's seriously intense.

I never used to like scares, I found them unpleasant and avoided horror movies and games generally, but over the last few years I've started to embrace the tension, racing heart and adrenaline rush from scares and indulge a lot more.

What flipped me over from avoiding it to enjoying it was actually watching scary movies while drunk with friends, it's a lot more fun. Try having a few beers or whatever your drink of choice is and play like that, I find that helps with really terrifying stuff.
