X-COM and the Doom games come to mind. In X-COM you feared losing any member of your squad and many UFO investigations were at night with limitied visibility.

Doom...the hellish screams of the Baron of Hell...the crispy fire of the Archvile...and who can forget their first encounter with Doom 1's end boss?

Undying was scary but I never did finish that one.

I don't recall SS2 being *that* scary though it was a frighteningly good game.

Shadowgate rocked! It wasn't *too* scary (well I'm sure it was when I was playing it.. I was a little younger than 9), but damn it was interesting. Hard too! When I finally got to the end I saved it and then I just kept reloading that save, beating the game over and over all the time, for no good reason.

System shock 2 or the oringinal AVP. AVP's marine campaign stressed me out so bad that it was almost not fun to play it. It's such a unique experiance that I probably did the final 2 levels(orbital and the ship one that has insane amounts of aliens) like 15 times each..... I never had the guts to complete any of the insane bonus missions.

Gabriel Knight series.

Gabriel Knight 1 had a nice scary story line, only if it were a newer game with more realistic graphics.

Gabriel Knight 2 was cool, not as cool as 1 though.

Yeah, Shadowgate wasn't nearly as scary as Uninvited.

Did you ever play the others in the series?

I might wanna try SS2 one day...what in it that's scary? The atmosphere? Sudden loud noise?

edit: typo

I've not played it so someone will prolly post a better answer. From what I understand it's one of those games where you spend a lot of time with 3 shots left in your clip and some bigass monster waiting around the corner.

Agreed.

I can't wait for Doom3. I think with Trent Resnor doing the soundtrack, this game is going to be fvcking freaky!

7th Guest when I was a lot younger, that was the first game I played with a soundcard (Pro Audio Spectrum 16) and I would play it late at night in the dark. Very creepy.

I suppose if I had to choose a game it would probably be Thief 1, though that's hardly terribly scary relatively speaking.
I'm generally not one to be particularly interested in the horror themed games.

Yeah, the Catacombs rocked. Actually the whole game rocked but the catacombs had a unique Indiana Jones feel to them. I loved mowing down zombies with the MP40 and watching them explode in a shower of blood and bones.

hehehe, why the hell am I laughing at that? That is a classic Internet answer to a question. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with the original question.

When I was a small kid, Chimera on the C-64 scared me. I don't remember the game much at all. But when it loaded and the evil voice said "Chimera!" I always got spooked. I'm sure the game was super dumb, but I was 8 or something and it seemed evil at the time.

I've played it through loads of times and still find it spooky. It more atmosphere than anything else for example creeping around dark warehouses and you can hear mad monkeys screaming and killer robots in the distance calling you. The story is also fantastic, at points in the game you'll see a dead body on the floor and a ghost of that person will appear and you'll see what happened to them...pretty hard to explain but its done really well.

The tension is also really good, as previously mentioned you hardly have any equipment so you need to channel the available resources into specific skills and abilities so you have to sacrifice one thing to gain something else. Playing COOP helps because each person can specialise in individual skills.

For such an old game its amazing how its stood the test of time, especially with the 3rd party mod someone is doing to redesign all the models.

Another vote for SS2. The Thief series (by the same developer as System Shock series actually) also had some very dark and creepy moments. I can't wait for Thief 3. Coming out this winter!!
