Doom 3 scared me so often it almost got exhausting. To quote Chuck Osborne: "Death was almost a relief at times". It allowed me to gather myself before going on.

The moment you descend a ladder in FEAR and see Alma when you turn around, and then immediately see Fettel when you get to the bottom is probably gave me the biggest jolt ever.

The cemetary level in thief was pretty scary imo.

I can't play Aliens vs Predator because of the motion detector sound. I may have been too young the first time I saw Aliens, because it seems to have done some psychological damage.

I agree that some of the underground levels in STALKER were pretty scary.

I remember the first game that really spooked me as a kid was Alone in the Dark. Gave you a sense of dread pretty much throughout the entire game.

The scariest moment I can remember in F.E.A.R. is when I was in a room/office or something, and turned around just to see Alma standing there, silently staring at me from the other side of the glass. Scared the breath out of me.

Stuff like that tends to scare me more than overt gore, which ends up desensitizing me after awhile. I think creating a genuine sense of fear or dread is an art that involves a combination of environment, sounds, music, etc. I love it when something happens in a game to genuinely creep me out.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is great at that. Even though the game wasn't really intended to be horrific per se, it just gives me a sense of awful dread. X18 Lab, the Agroprom Underground, etc. I remember the first time I played Call of Pripyat, I felt exhausted after going through the Jupiter Plant. Some of those buildings didn't end up have a single enemy in them, but just walking through the hallways with my flashlight was nerve-wrecking.

Oh yeah, and Metro2033...I hate the Librarian.

Stalker....good all around eerie atmosphere and moments where i was almost too scared to enter a room..its actually unfortunate it had a quicksave, autosaves would make progression very intense and fearfully stressful.

Doom...except it wasnt really scary so much as it was just jumpy. like a bunch of cheap scares and not so much actual dread or fear.

Resident Evil.
Amnesia has its moments as did Fear....to bad they screwed up the fear franchise though

me too, the lack of enemies was actually disapointing. odd that the scariest areas turned out to be the most boring..love its atmosphere, but it really needs some polish and more variety. The dogs in packs were just an annoyance...if they put in some ghosts like Fear had, omg it would help. I hated the controllers, not scary just annoying i thought.

The regenerating Necromorph in Dead Space 1. I ran around the room for a half hour shooting his limbs off before I finally figured out how to beat him.

Playing as Marine in Alien vs Predator 2.

The Haunted House in Thief 3 is quite nerve-wrecking too.

That OP video is weak...the guy's pissing himself about the Replicas...they're not the scary part. But anyway, the part with Alma near the ladder did make me jump a little. The sequels were really disappointing. They lost the atmosphere they created in the first one. Extraction Point wasn't really canon but it was plenty scary, especially in the "Auburn" Mental Ward.

Seconded on STALKER's Agroprom sewer, the mindflayer in particular. Haven't gotten a lot further on that game so far.

HL2's Ravenholm fast zombies made me jump the first time one charged at me.

Yeah, The Hunter actually got me to drop the game for a little bit.

The Tormenter (obviously NSFW) in Dead Space 2 was arguably one of the most epic/scary scenes for me.

I really do not enjoy being scared in games. So when I was, what, about 17 playing HL2 you can guess Ravenholm did not make me happy. When I came down those stairs and I see fast zombies in the distance jumping roof to roof, I said fuck this and didn't play for a month. haha.

I did end up beating it, but I did not like Ravenholm!

I really don't enjoy scary movies or games.

Jump out of chair: Doom 3

Deep deep scare + jump out of chair: Amnesia.

The entire games, no specific moment.

Oh, and that haunted hotel in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

This. Assuming you mean the burned out orphanage, Shalebridge Cradle.
Took me months to gather the courage to get through that, and the first part doesn't even have any enemies. Insane atmosphere.
Don't really get freaked out much in games anymore since playing that.

Yes, that's the name. It's been 6-7 years since I played the game so its name has eluded me.

I suppose I should add the first Resident Evil as well. The atmosphere and the initial apperarance of new creatures truly are scary. It's a pity each successive release of the series have gotten less scary (and more shooting-oriented).

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines Oceanside Hotel. Legendary! Too scary, had to no clip grab the journal and leave. lol. The rest of the game is fine. Drenched/dripping in awesome atmosphere. I *love* that game.
I'm not a fan of really scary stuff, like Amnesia, Silent Hill, etc. I'm more of a Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Galaxy fall levels type of person. Or meet the halloween man in Animal Crossing. .
Thief 3 the cradle is fantastic!
In terms of atmosphere and "fear" not tormentingly scary, They Hunger 1/2/3 is an experience on PC that is incredible.
I also enjoy Sven coop RE levels. Swiss Cheese made a Halloween mod for Half Life 1 that was quite good I thought, in terms of atmosphere, fall, and spooky.
There is also Dear Esther for HL2 i'm meaning to play.
This thread is "scary" though and none of the above games are scary. I don't like being so scared I can't finish a game, thats too much for me.
I'll veer. Metroid Prime 1 and Super Metroid. The ability of these games to make you feel isolated in a huge atmospheric world is uncanny. I don't think that feeling has ever been reproduced.
Half Life 1 had atmosphere and panic.
Doom 3 is scary. When that body flies across the vent towards you. Scary. lol.
I was able to get through Resident Evil 1 Remake on Gamecube with cheats. Cheats toned down the scary to a level I could handle, so I could enjoy the atmosphere and story. That game is superb.

You enter & find some audio logs that set the scene. The flashback freaked me out pretty good... b/c who the fuck expects to experience a flash back in fallout 3?! And shit gets dark, ghouls all around, pretty intense.

Well looks like I'm playing Fallout 3 next. I never went there! This recommendation is really cool. Lots of games aren't particularly scary, but one level or one location can be. I'm playing Dead Money right now and I feel its pretty well done. If you took the light step perk. The backstory is interesting.

The invisible babies from Silent Hill with their creepy groans got me pretty good.

The part in Metro 2033 when you're on the train tracks with some other people and those creatures start to come out of the dark, forcing you off the cart and you have to run to the end with hardly any ammo. Pretty intense.

Finally, 2 moments from Deadspace 2. The Necromorph that you can't kill is one. That last mad dash to the end boss trying to avoid not only him but all the other Necromorphs was pretty intense. The other moment is the end fight. It's not really scary I guess but it's disturbing. I really enjoyed Deadspace 1 but man the Deadspace 2 ending is one of the most memorable in all my years playing games. That's one seriously disturbed game.

Also that blood writing on the wall, something about beware of the undying king.

Amnesia did nothing for me... probably because it was too dark to see anything.

I found Doom III to be exhausting personally. Just waiting for the next monster to jump out of the closet..... I had to like psych myself up to go further sometimes.

System Shock 2 used to be the scariest game I've ever played, just for the total atmosphere.

The entire Stalker series has now become my favorite game for the overall sense of dread it makes you feel. The desolation and hopelessness just adds to it. They are able to sort of invoke emotion somehow which I still don't really understand. Because games are rarely able to do that to me these days.

As someone else mentioned, I do distinctly remember being on the rooftops at the end of Ravenholm and hearing those fast Zombies growling..... then I could hear them climbing up the downspout getting closer and closer to the roof...... That was fantastic.

The creators of the Thief series did a wonderful job with atmosphere, just due to the intense sounds of the environment.

Its funny how all the games we are mentioning are older games. Either we're all getting older or they just don't create games the way they used to....

Doom II, even to this day only Doom I/II has enemies that announce their presence with their signature screams.

Fucking Baron's "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" always scared the living shit out of me when they surprise buttsecks you with the sudden door opening.

HF2's Ravenholm was never 'scary' to me. It just felt like a fun zombie level.

I was about to post about the VTM:B Oceanside Hotel. I still can't play that level at night, feels way too real and haunted.
