Back in the very early days of EverQuest 1. The days where you could lose all your items if you did not get back to your corpse in time. The days where dying was harsh. lost hard won experience. could even de-level. Invisible could "poof" at any time without warning. as in you could be running around in a dangerous place invis and wham. its gone usually followed by the "loading please wait" message.

So here is my L24ish wizard in the maze in Cazic Thule. having died once and am now invis trying to find corpse. no farging idea where i am or where body is. expecting invis to poof any second. mobs all over the damn place. Thot i was going to have a stroke.

As mentioned. the original DOOM. I think there was one room where all the lights go out and you cant see fugg all. Things are attacking but you cant see what or where they are.

Like many others have said FEAR 1 did a great job of freaking me out. My reactions were much like the youtube link in the OPs post.

Doom 3 to a certain extent, but FEAR left a deeper impression on me.

Metro 2033 really didn't get to me much, except for the Librarian part.

The entire Stalker series has now become my favorite game for the overall sense of dread it makes you feel. The desolation and hopelessness just adds to it. They are able to sort of invoke emotion somehow which I still don't really understand. Because games are rarely able to do that to me these days.

I understand exactly what you're talking about and I totally agree. I think a lot of it has to do with the incredible art direction, sound design, and approach to gameplay. It is lonely and harsh, but somehow beautiful at the same time. You're walking through these old factories / buildings that were once part of a thriving area, but are now deserted. There are vehicles, agricultural machines, and trains that are now frozen in a state of desolation...themselves looking almost ghostly.

The game doesn't throw monsters at you around every corner, and there aren't any of the typical horror cliches. It just feels dreadful and real...the game is truly unique in this regard.

I'm so stoked that STALKER 2 is slated for release sometime next year.

While I LOVED F.E.A.R's gameplay and firefights (best of the time, by far), I don't understand how it was "scary" to so many people.

Yes, it was creepy and very atmospheric. And there were some "jump" moments, but (and I hope I'm not spoiling anything here), you quickly realize that aside from a few cutscene moments involving Alma, nothing except standard soldiers can actually hurt you, and all the "jump" moments are fleeting visions of her that you know are going to be harmless.

Maybe I'm alone, but ordinary human soldiers with weapons do not scare or disturb me, usually only more "supernatural" elements do that, and I have to feel like my avatar can or will actually be hurt. And I never felt that during the "scary" parts of FEAR.

Oldest memory would be when Resident Evil first came out. Playing that shit in the dark. Fuck. Yea.
Recently, FEAR games do a great job of putting the player on edge.

The original Quake. It's late at night in a dark room. I turn a corner and a spore jumps out at me! I almost jumped out of my seat.
