Two games come to mind...old though. One is John Saul's "Blackstone Chronicles", creepy atmosphere throughout. Other is "Sanitarium". Never forgot the macabre atmosphere in those two games.

Yep, I agree.

This is the exact game I was going to post. Of course, I cannot think of one independent part that was scarier than the rest. It all got to me, And I actually returned the game.

But walking down the hallway, and the statue's heads would turn and look at you. Or the knocking on the doors in the hallway. I may just have to purchase it again.

About two-thirds of Alien Vs Predator 2. I dunno if I can even pick one specific moment.
Maybe when you are crawling under the deck plates and the steam pipe drops quickly in front of you. It looks like an alien head.

And much of F.E.A.R.

Nothing in Doom 3.

I've only had one "Jump out of my seat" moment in my million years of video gaming. It was in "Undying". You walk from a room, into a hallway that ends into a mirror on end and is open down the other.

They know that most people will be drawn to look into the mirror. As soon as you do this, you see a giant horrible monster closing in on you fast from behind.

I freaked and fumbled the mouse. I franticlly was trying to recover the mouse, and finally turned around to see... nothing...

It was really well done.

The rest of the game was not so scary.

I agree the haunted house in "Vampire" was really well done. You've seen it a million times before, but the atmosphere was just right.

I remember there was a good "creep factor" in my first playthrough in the original "Alone in the Dark". It was kind of revolutionary then...

The dogs jumping through the window in Resident Evil 1 made me and my pal both jump up entirely off the couch and the controller went flying. We both went scrambling after it and started laughing.

Headcrabs get me sometimes too.

Just hearing the ambient noise and the splicers talking in Bioshock freaked my wife out.

When I played BG, my save got corrupted at the very end of the game.

Having a game crash when you haven't saved it, also sucks/scary.

diablo 1 multiplayer - catacombs - level 7. typically there is a pack of acid hounds with a boss on this level. you *will* get raped by them if not careful (and since it's diablo 1, you drop all your items, too).

In Vampire Bloodlines when you enter the cyber café back room and the mutant jumps out at you. That scream still gives me chills to this day.

Also in Undying when you’re in the stables and Aaron is painting a hideous monster behind you. Then you turn around and what he painted is right there…

I'm kinda surprised that Halo's original Library level, where there are barely any lights, and the Flood charge from the darkness, isn't anywhere in this thread. That level has left a lasting impression on me for any game involving non-humans in dark levels; Halo 2, Half Life 2, Quake IV... I just rush through, constantly on edge, and just quit playing HL2 entirely.

Quake I. It was one of the first levels where you stepped on a floor switch, and then two blocks slowly floated into place onto a wall, opening the door. Inside, nothing but darkness. Then, out of nowhere, one of those damn demon dogs jumps out and mauls your face.

I think I was 13-14 at the time, and my grandma was ironing something in the basement (where the computer was). I remember screaming Holy Shit, and then immediately realized she was there. I've never had a game do that to me since (probably because I always expect that kind of thing now).

I don't really get into scary games all that much, but...

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Lab X-18.

That's about it, I.E not much can compare to that, not for me anyway.

I'm a tough guy, nothing scares me. That said, my most heart pounding moment was waiting for a whole player-owned castle to collapse in Ultima Online. Dozens of people were waiting & hiding nearby. All hoping for a piece of the big pie, be it loot stored in the structure, or the extremely valuable land to be available for ownership.

So there I was, waiting along the others right in front of the castle. We were waiting for hours & hours, and we kept checking the sign message to ensure that it was indeed about to fall. Estimating the moment it collapses isn't a hard science, folks usually have to take at least half a day off to patiently wait. The closer we got to the latest possible collapse hour, the more crowdy it got. Soon it became a carnival-like atmosphere, with players wandering around selling wares, several entire guilds came & a few started guild-fight contests. Fools were walking about too, shouting that the castle wasn't going to fall, and that we should all go home. Newbies wearing nothing but pants & orc helms running around the castle like little kids. It bears noting that this occurred in the Trammel facet, where murdering & thieving wasn't possible, and placing brand new houses didn't require a completely empty ground (unlike several years prior).

Then suddenly, it collapsed!! The whole place went wild, with people rushing to grab what they can. There were dozens of heavy chests players could not carry. Who knows what were inside. Thousands of metal ingots? Very valuable especially if they were the rare kind. Magic reagents? Probably not as valuable, not unless it numbered in the tens of thousands each. Rares? These were what most looters were after, as some were absolutely priceless. Could be a basket-fruit, or maybe those crystal-clear jars. Or perhaps it was a one-of-a-server kind rare that never respawned, like a stone pillar, or maybe a horse-drawn cart! Whatever they were after, I was not. I was there for the empty patch of dirt. I wanted to place a 2-story home. Almost immediately after the structure came down, houses of various sizes started popping up, then disappearing! And again, and again! It was some sort of bug, where two or more players placing homes on the same spot would not be able to do so. So it was a race against time! Within 10 seconds, the first successful house was placed. It was a small 1-story home, on the far side of the lot. Guilds started 'cheating' by placing boxes in the empty field, someone forgot to remind them that doesn't work anymore lol! Suddenly wham! A large tower appeared, then disappeared! Caught everyone by surprise, and it lagged most of them, enough for two more homes to be successfully placed! I was frantically trying to put my 2-story home down, but no good! Tried again & again, 4 players were attempting to do the same on my side, but they weren't successful either! I change tactic, and try my luck with a small home instead. Wham! A large blacksmith-home was placed! Then the unthinkable, it started getting so laggy with all the players running about, spamming the screen with words, than I got disconnected!! NOO!

When I returned, it was too late. All available spaces were taken up with brands new homes, and all loot captured. I was left empty-handed, with a sad frowny face, and my heart was racing. Oh well. I moved on to the next plot of land, a small house about to collapse in a quiet corner of the world. It came down after 3-4 days, and I got it. I then decorated it, and then sold it at a huge profit. Ah UO...

In HL2, the very first time they booby-trapped you with a zombie jumping up out of the water, where there's a crate to be opened. Or was it when you had to go through that toxic area just before you get the watercraft? One of those two.

I judge it based on the ammount of ammo I wasted shooting at shadows. Doom 3, although I only played a little bit I was shooting at all kinds of non enemies. And then an enemy would come out...

I'm going to have to say the labs on Shadow of Chernobyl.

Low on ammo, weird creaking noises everywhere, controllers, bloodsuckers, Pseudogiants. NO GAME, comes close to the immersion I felt when exploring those labs and how scared I was when for the first time, after wondering what the hell that staticy noise was, I saw the controller walk through the door at the oppposite end of the hall. The best part was, I was pretty far away, so when It came through, it was basically a black model, and I was freaking out.

Of course, in Call of Pripyat, hearing dogs barking is among the scariest things in the game, because you know you're about to get mobbed by two dozen dogs.
