Oops indeed. Sometimes black people can be just as bad as the white guys. People like these and the people in Durham county during the Duke scandal certainly don't put the southern black community in a good light.

WATCH THE DAMN VIDEO MORONS

It's a white guy arguing that the school should be named after a black man, and a black woman saying it shouldn't. Christ some of you liberals are so hellbent on appearing compassionate that your as racist as the people you claim you're fighting against. Morons, all of you.

Uh, excuse me, but the moron is YOU for assuming who I was talking about!

But clearly, SOMEONE must be a racist if the only reason we're discussing the school's name is because someone wanted to honor a black guy. Right? If there's no racism, on ANYONE'S part, then why even discuss it? The guy was an astronaut and a fine American. End of story. Name the school.

Additionally, we only got to see the briefest of clips of the meeting. Where's the rest? Or are you content to judge the entire content and context by a 20-second clip?

Laughable.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- The Guilford County school board decided the new elementary school in the Reedy Fork Ranch area of northeast Guilford County will be called "The Ronald McNair Elementary School at Reedy Fork." The name honors one of the astronauts killed in the Challenger shuttle explosion over 21 years ago. The use of the McNair name sparked a debate about race at the school board meeting Thursday night.

I just can't believe this type of debate even goes on anymore, it really disgusts me.

IMHO, his race is irrelevant. He was a local person who was a great American who died in a national tragedy. People should be honored to have their school named after him.

It's the south what did you expect. That is why I (Asian American) don't live in those low areas. People down there still think slavery exist. Alabama for example abolished their interatial marriage law (two person of different race coudn't marry) back in 2000.

http://archives.cnn.com/2000/ALLPOLITICS/stories/11/07/alabama.interracial/

They were the last state to do this in this nation......!!!!!

"People down there still think slavery exists."

One of the most idiotic statements I've heard...How many people from the South do you actually know, and what do you base these claims on???

Edited for spelling. Darn public schools.

Of course they don't move. A local from alabama or texas couldn't even AFFORD to breath the air of NY for a min let alone the multicultural population.

Believe what you want about the south. As far as I'm concerned it just keeps more of you people from moving down here.

Yes, and of course we are not going to move down there. Why would affluent people lower themselves.

Lower themselves???

Where do you shop to get a hat large enough to fit your head??

Have you met everyone from the South, if not you have no idea what you are talking about.

Do you realize how arrogant you are ??

Heh, the fact that you approve of the south is not a good argument for disproving what steppinthrax believes about it. While I think the south has a lot more "backward" things than more northern states, I don't believe it's even close to universal. Still, the more extreme conservatives extol the virtues of the south, the more I think steppinthrax might be on the right track...the kind of place he believes the south is seems EXACTLY like the kind of place you would like.

Heh, all of us in the South are not Racists.

Lump us all together, isnt there a name for someone who does that??

What a bunch of racist jerks! :|
Who are the "racist jerks" you are referring to? The OP, the posters, the school board, the newscasters, the people that live in that area, the South, the black school board member who brought up the concern of using the astronaut's name? Try being specific so nobody has to assume.

Are YOU content to judge SOMEONE as racist on the entire content and context of a 20-second clip and a very small local news article?

Looks like you are making assumptions. Did you even bother to click the other related link? How about doing it now so you can be enlightened.

Most of the folks on the left like you don't really have a clue about life in "the South". All you focus on is some negative news you see and hear and invoke your vitriol hatred. You are worse than the right you despise and complain about all of the time. I would rather live in the South than California or New York with you and steppinthrax.

Yeah I remember some black chick and two of her friends loudly talking once while riding the public bus about how "Chinamen" and "Crackers" were getting all the good jobs and how "Wetbacks" only came here to sell drugs to decent black folk and steal the only low paying jobs. Of course no one dared say anything for some reason.

A friend of a friend moved from Alaska to Tennessee to go to college. After two years there he made an odd comment: "I never hated black people until I lived in Tennessee."

And he was serious. Apparently in the South its an "us against them" mentality regardless of what your color is. Or that's the impression I got. I wouldn't know.

There are racists of every color, you can focus on singular examples or you can see the larger picture or both. Looking at specific examples allows you to to feel for the party that was wronged whether it happens a lot or a little doesn't matter.

Somebody was wrong and it not only makes you feel for the wronged but it makes you feel for specific groups that this person represents and anger for anyone associated with the wrongdoer.

The larger picture. There's still a lot of racism against blacks. Increasing racism against arabs and mexicans but still black racism is huge. There is even racism against whites and when that happens OMG the specific examples get trotted out like it's a war.

But that's another generalization isn't it? As a white guy things can still not go your way and racism can effect you negatively and life can go wrong in many directions. People you know or see in the news of other races may have got some advantages you never got.

Everybody goes wrong here. You either make generalizations to justify something messed up about whole groups based on statistics or specific examples. Real understanding comes from taking in all the information without an agenda.

You were content to call people racists based on a 20 second clip that you didn't even watch, but I can't make judgments based on that same 20 second clip? Typical partisan.

Let's see where should I start?

I believe the woman present in the video is a racist for assuming that the people of Reedy Fork Ranch would not appreciate the school being named after McNair.

Obviously, I can't see the entire meeting, nor the multitude of other people that spoke, however I can quite easily infer that naming the school after McNair has caused some in the community to speak out against it. Otherwise why are they even holding a meeting over it? I can also easily infer that it's probably racism that's causing some in the community to speak out. Why else would they do so?

If you have some alternate explanation for why we're even having this discussion, I'd love to hear it.

Otherwise why are they even holding a meeting over it?

I live in NC, I think I can help you out with this.

Firstly, nothing in the video says that is meeting was held (just) about the naming of the school as you seem to say.

But otherwise, in NC our school boards hold regular public meetings where everything, other than "personnel matters" are discussed, that's prohibited by law. (I mean stuff specifically about an individual school employee.) The proposed number of teachers, pay etc is always discussed.

This is a new school, everything about it is going to be discussed in detail. Likely have been many many meetings (over a period of a couple of years) where this new school was discussed (as well as other school matters).

I'd be cautious about assuming there was some community racial outburst over this. I suspect that would have been mentioned in the broadcast or the debate. Looks to me like the Black woman doesn't like the "PC whiteys" ripping off one of "their" heros for a mostly white school. <shrug>

This is not an unusual attitude. Several years back when my city decided to honor ML King with a street named after him and a park, there was much debate about WHERE.

All the convenient and prominent places were outside the bounderies of a "Black community" (meaning mostly Black, and few or no whites). Well, that sh!t wasn't gonna fly with the Black leaders in the community. The city eventually had to petition the NC DOT to rename a section of a state HW that ran right by a "Black" neighborhood etc.

I would expect roughly the same with a new school named after a Black astronaut.

While I may have knee-jerked a bit on this particular topic, I can't help but think there are folks here who believe racism is all but wiped out in North Carolina. I don't think that's the case anywhere, let alone in a conservative southern state like NC.
