One theory is he caved on the wall because he knows it's a dumb idea but Democrats will give a big boost to boarder security spending plus cut him some slack on tax reform.
Which on the surface sounds fair, everybody who came to the table got something other than Chinese food.
I believe we've already seen what goes on at his table.

Is this some kind of weird unconventional way for Trump to get his fellow Repubs off their asses and fully motivated toward fulfilling Trump's campaign promises or what?

So funny that the Dems and Trump have actually got some real work done by creating this fragile bi-partisan bubble of sorts that gives both the Dems and Trump something to brag about at the expense of making McConnell and Ryan look like feckless idiots that can't prevent their keystone cop legislators from clubbing each other stupid with their night sticks.

I believe salutations are in order for John McCain who prevented many Repubs from committing political suicide via their unsuccessful attempts at passing a toxic stink bomb of a plot to give the very wealthy a hefty tax cut in the guise of repealing and replacing Obamacare. However, a result of that unintended(?) saving grace by McCain gave Trump the impetus to turn to the Dems and allowed both Trump and the Dems to pull one hell of a mutually beneficial juke on the House/Senate Repubs.

Strange times we live in.

Haha from Team Trump

Trump also refuted that specific assertion by the Democratic leaders about a border wall, tweeting, "The WALL, which is already under construction in the form of new renovation of old and existing fences and walls, will continue to be built.

Personally I love how the wall is being built right now in the form of new renovation of old fencing

I will believe this when I see legislation introduced in both the House and Senate.

Well that's twice now he's reached across the isle. Maybe there's adults at the steering wheel in west wing now that are getting through to him. This is how you get your approval ratings up. He bottomed out with his base. This is how you slowly start to dig yourself out. Quite an interesting couple weeks we've had.

This isn't "the deal" but another data point in the understanding that Trump will deal. The Democrats just have to wait for the right opportunity.

I'm getting this weird feeling that the Republicans may now silently push Robert Mueller to ramp up his investigations on Trump.

That's the question isn't it? Is working with the Dems an impeachable offense to McConnell and Ryan.

Seriously, have the last two years taught you guys nothing? What Trump says means literally zero. Remember how his tax cuts were going to make the rich pay more, right up until he unveiled tax cuts that would make them pay way less? Remember how his health care bill was going to take care of everyone right up until he unveiled one that would take insurance away from tens of millions?

I am genuinely baffled as to why every time Trump says something seemingly normal people jump to the conclusion that maybe THIS TIME he's not lying despite the fact that in almost every prior occasion he's been lying. What will it take for people to realize he's been lying to basically everyone he knows for his entire life and thinks nothing of it? Trust he was telling the truth when the legislation is introduced and passed and not a second before.

I have to laugh at Tump saying on twitter that there is no deal then proceed to lay out the basic parameters of the deal the Dems said they have.

The DREAM Act and border security (sans wall) money will get stapled on to something that is a must pass. What exactly that vehicle will be isn't clear yet but there are a couple potential opportunities before the end of the year. The bigger question is will the GOP swallow it or try to buck him.

Certainly possible, but that doesn't change the fact that history shows you can't trust a single solitary word he says. Anyone who thinks otherwise can just reference...well... just about every other promise he's made.

Eh. He's a guy that is absolutely fixated on "ratings" and how he is viewed by others. They have done nothing but go down down down. Slowly as the cancer is removed from this administration some reasonable voices may finally be able to be heard. It's possible that someone finally got into his ear and said "Try this...what can it hurt? Most of the country already hates you". And here we are. He's desperate to pass something...anything...to look like he's been effective. The dems are the ones with opposition power and public backing.

If the guy wants to go down as a peoples champion and not the worst president in history...and actually do something better than Obama...watch the dems get into his ear. If they can flip him on Single Payer medical reform he'll go down a hero and not a villain. In his own twisted, narcissistic world view, I do think he does "care". And he only has so many years left on this earth. He's got an opportunity to forge his place in history here.

The optics in all of this are quite interesting. I'm just going to sit back and watch.

And yet he has consistently done things that make him extremely unpopular for the last two years. You can go back and read the half dozen or more times where he has made similar noises to this and the national press has fallen over itself to declare a New Trump. Every time they were wrong. Why were all the previous times wrong and this one right?

Remember, the only reason this 'pivot' is even a thing is because he took the incredibly unpopular move of ending DACA to begin with. It's like saying you have a new commitment to fire safety by extinguishing the house you set on fire.

I for one am going to wait until I see literally a single substantive action on his part that indicates this. The world has an awful lot of broke people who walked out of a meeting with Donald Trump convinced he was going to do what he just promised.

Welp, it looks like Team Trump is walking back on this 'deal' after the blowback from his base (and I'm sure a few calls from Congressional GOP leaders...)

I didn't trust this from the get-go--this just didn't pass the smell test. I think Schumer either stupidly jumped the gun on tweeting about this 'deal' (which probably pissed off Trump--stole his thunder) OR he knowingly jumped the gun in order to push Trump into a corner. Either way, Democrats should know better than to hold someone like Trump to his word. You can't deal with the Devil and expect to win.

I feel like Schumer and Pelosi only gain by announcing the deal. I'm sure they knew conservatives would freak out and either they would get the policy they wanted and a schism between Republicans or the status quo... and a schism between Republicans.

It's not at all surprising to me that the White House is walking this back. Like I said, you can't trust a word that comes out of Trump's mouth.

This was a win-win-win for Chuck and Nancy

announcing it would piss off his base
If he reneges make him look bad again
If he goes along its enacting a good policy

Another wrinkle in this is that he's looking out to 2018 and realizing he could served up a shit sandwich if the Dems retake the house. Start working with them now to maybe save his ass in 2019.

I actually think it's more personal than that. Trump likes Schumer and Pelosi, he knows them, and they can talk endlessly about subjects near and dear to Trump's heart. Doesn't hurt at all that they can actually deliver votes on deals he might cut with them. The word "jovial" was used to describe Trump's mood during the dinner with them.

Ryan and McConnell have no such currency and he's taken to treating them like recalcitrant servants.

I told one of my friends this morning that they absolutely pulled an epic shanghai on Trump with this one. I'll be fascinated to see how this goes.
