Basically, we're the ancient race that some younger expansionist race digs up and becomes in awe of the faster than light gateways that we constructed.

A. E. van Vogt did you one better: what if we're the ones who discovered time travel and caused the Big Bang, thereby creating the universe and ourselves?

What if we are just like the dinosaurs? And our legacy after we go extinct will just be fuel for the next civilization?

They have things like the atom bomb, so I think I'll stay where I "ahm"
Civilization, I'll stay right here!

as a side topic, ever notice that most sci-fi is canadian in origin? Bioware is canadian. BSG and the Stargate series have a strong canadian flavor.

Someone called me a progenitor one time, so I called him a procrastinator right back.

cold temperatures outside and ugly women causes lots of imagination?

it's more about space being the final frontier I think. Canada is still a frontier country, largely. Also, Farscape was done in Australia and Australia as a whole seems to be where a lot of sci fi is shot.

It will end up being like Star Trek TNG's "The Chase," except that the message encoded in the genes of all life forms in the galaxy will turn out to be a Rickroll.

The hope remains for an intelligent race more civilized, hospitable, and agreeable than our own.

The universe is in trouble if earth's humans are the progenitor race.

Europeans?

I so want to settle Mars and mine astroids, terraform planets and the like.

I hope not.

Our future is bleak and boring then. I want us to be the baby species of the universe, the ones who are a little late joining the party.

Because that means we'll probably get our asses kicked and we'll be better off for it.
Then again, we could be the galactic/universal badasses who are only so late to the party because we are so effective at bickering and fighting it out across massive wars that we stagnated ourselves.

What if we are the ones who are late joining the galactic arena, yet end up easily taking control of the empire over the span of a few generations?
I'd like to think we'll be the feared ones, due to our military strategic prowess... but again, we could be woefully at odds against advanced weaponry.

LOL that would be pretty awesome HAHAHA

The younger races be like, "Wow we finally discover the SECRET message left behind by the race that created us all."

RICKROLL becomes a religion.

LOL

we're more likely to be the aliens from another world.

think about it. let's say that we find a habitable planet in alpha centauri and send a settler ship there.

That thing will have traveled for like 50 years at 1/10 of light speed to get there.

Fuck yeah we're going to take all the land and terraform the fuck out of whatever planet we find. even if there is a small sentient race of bipedal creatures on the surface.

Basically, we're the ancient race that some younger expansionist race digs up and becomes in awe of the faster than light gateways that we constructed.

Then it won't matter as we're stuck in our solar system and go extinct. If no one finds Earth, humans might not even make it into the history books elsewhere. After that our only hope would be the Voyagers and whatever else we send out afterwards.

Again, I firmly believe that if time travel is even possible, it is only possible to the extent of the moment whatever mechanism to travel through time is discovered/invented. Therefore this option is not viable.

This is actually a talked about theory, from what I've read. The idea behind it being that the universe is only now maturing to the point where there's enough of the heavier elements around (stuff created in supernovae) to support advanced forms of life and the technologies they create.

You don't need to bring sci-fi into this... this stuff happens on our planet too. Nothing is stopping us from being completely wiped out, only for the human race to start over again elsewhere. These humans would unearth our ruins and be quite impressed at our technology and intelligence given the time, just like we do with the Mayans and other civilizations. It's something that's been thought of time and time again.
