cult:

1 : formal religious veneration : worship
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 : a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator <health cults>
5 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad b : the object of such devotion c : a usually small group of people characterized by such devotion

Seems like pretty much every religion falls under that.

And we all know every world has to use the exact definition that is presented in Webster. If you response is really going to be that...Pretty lame.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=define%3A+cult&aq=f&aqi=l1g10&aql=&oq=

"•a religion or sect that is generally considered to be unorthodox, extremist, or false; "it was a satanic cult" "

Either way, it is a little odd they would have a booth set up at a gun show. lol

It's funny, since had it been Christians, they would of been booted out, probably even by police, they'd pull the trespassing card or something stupid like that.

That's a fucking feel-good definition right there. "Unorthodox"? "Extremist"? Fucking "FALSE"? Those are all subjective ideas. The Webster definition is OBJECTIVE. I'm not sorry that it doesn't sound nice, but it's true.

I went to a local gun show today.
There was a guy in a wheelchair with a Scientology table and an E-Meter.
He was selling L Ron Hubbard books and shirts.

WTF... why the hell would the promoters allow a Scientologist into a gun show?

I wanted to do his E Meter test and mess around with him, but I felt bad because he was in a wheel chair.

Because they paid the fee? Honestly, gun nuts would strike me as prime recruiting grounds for whacko religions.

As a gun show promoter, I would limit the tables to vendors selling things related to guns.

This isn't a big show, so the promoters were probably hurting for money and accepted whatever they could get.

Scientologists are certifiably nuts

Christians are just superstitious
The only major difference is that the holy figure and sacred text(s) of Scientology were created in the last 100 years.

Ok? Christianity would have counted as a cult during its early years as well.
Then once it becomes mainstream enough, it graduates into a religion, despite still making as little sense as Scientology.

And while scientologists may do crazy stuff, they do it within the confines of their religion, and it doesn't tend to impact the rest of us negatively (Battlefield Earth the exception).
They aren't likely to go grab some guns and start killing people in the name of L Ron.

I don't know why Scientology and Mormonism aggravates me so much, yet Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc do not.

I guess it's because faith in something thousands of years old makes more sense than something invented by a modern scam artist... err I mean "prophet".

Why should the thousand year old scam artists get all the dough?
