is this card VIVO like it says in their email replies? How can that be if it's not the AIW?

I am still awaiting delivery of my ENPC 8500. Question: Why the sudden reduction in the price of the 8500? Anand has the answer:

"The RV250 chip will be the mainstream part that will take over once the R300 launches. While we can't disclose the specific specifications of the part, our board manufacturing contacts today informed us that the performance of the RV250 is very close to that of the R200 (Radeon 8500).
This obviously means that the RV250 will not only make the Radeon 8500LE obsolete but it will also make the Radeon 8500 useless as well. Apparently ATI has had the RV250 ready for a while but they didn't want to kill Radeon 8500 sales so they held off on releasing it until closer to R300's launch. Considering the chip will be a mainstream product we can expect it to sell on boards for around the $199 price point.
The architecture is very similar to R200 (DX8 part) with a few things removed and core clock speeds are expected to be close to 300MHz according to our sources today. At 300MHz the RV250 has the potential of being tough competition for the GeForce4 Ti 4200, but we'll have to wait for its launch before we can decide for certain."

I still think the buy is a good one... the 8500 is a great card and the R250 will be more expensive ($199) for some time to come... any video card as good as the 8500 for less than one hundred smackers is a good thing.

i'm going to install it now, it came in a brown box with two (yes, 2!) dvi-crt connectors, driver cd, and 2 cables
i'll keep you all updated when i find out everything else

how do i tell if it is indeed retail or not? and the speed of the ram? i can tell you it's hynix (like the ad said)...

You usually can tell immediately if it is retail if it comes in a colorful "retail" box.

well crap...upon closer inspection, i found one of the capacitors had broken off of the card in shipping...guess it's RMA time...

BigEdMuustaffa - earlier in the thread someone posted a reply that they had gotten from ENPC saying they were retail cards, but they ran out of retail boxes, so were shipping them in brown boxes...mine was in a brown box, i was just looking for some way other than the bright and colorful box to tell if it's retail

From a logistics aspect I find it hard to believe that retail cards would not come in the "shiny" boxes from ATI. That said I hope you have good luck with your RMA. Keep us posted.

Okay lets see if I can make it clearer. Retail comes from the manufacturer in a retail box. A reseller cannot "rebox" a retail product. (unless -see 2 below) They cannot "run out" of retail boxes. They obviously are selling an OEM product, not a retail product. The only way a seller can sell a retail product in a brown box, is 1) They are lying to you and it's an OEM product, or
2) They purchased a bunch of retail product in dammaged retail boxes, and they are "repackaging" it. They cannot run out of retail boxes.

Now that I think about it, it's more likely that the guy selling these things bought a bunch of damaged retail boxed products, like maybe the pallet fell off a truck or boat or something......So, he puts them in a brown OEM box and is calling them retail. What he isn't telling you is that they may be damaged. The capictor was probably broken or about to fall off before it was shipped to you.

Got mine today. Perfect condition. 3.6ns Hynix memory, S-video and composite video cables, DVI to CRT adapter, an S-video to composite dongle and instructions/drivers. Appears to be all the stuff that comes with the retail card. Won't install it until maybe this weekend. I think I'll be mighty happy with it, especially for the price.

On a related note, on the whole retail/OEM issue, I just purchased an OEM Intellimouse Explorer from Dell. It is identical in every way to a "retail" Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, but it was half the price. I consider this deal to be a similar situation. The exact same product that comes in the fancy-schmancy box on the shelf, but without said box, and for half the price.

I got my card yesterday. i installed it and after tinkering with the bios it worked great.

here's what was included:
DVI to VGA adapter
S-Video cable
RCA cable
S-Video to RCA adapter
Radeon 8500 driver CD
Half Life CD

It all came in a plain brown box so i guess its not "retail" but it doesnt matter since it came with everything a retail package would have included.

I got my card yesterday. Came in a brown box but has everything a retail box would have (cables + dvi-to-vga adapter, CDs, manuals)

How can I tell if that's a 275/275 card ?

Thanks

If it doesn't have that chip then it's like the one at NewEgg that only does CRT+DVI.
