Okay - here's what the thread title is suppose to be:

Scorching Hot : Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100 memory $34.99 after rebate ($28.99 after pricematch) at Best Buy (starts 12/22) - $5.00 to $10.00 pricematch if you buy/bought either during the week of Dec 8-14th, or Dec 22-24 ! ! ! !

Fatwallet thread

earlier AT thread

Available online at Best Buy.com

Starting today (Dec 22nd), Best Buy will have Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100 memory for $39.99 after rebates:

Starting Thursday (Dec 26th), Best Buy will have Crucial 256MB DDR PC2100 memory for $34.99 after rebates (same rebate):
(sorry, no ad link yet, see Fatwallet thread for "details")

Smoldering Hot:
(Dec 22-24) $99.99 - $35 Instant Rebate - $25.00 mail-in rebate = $39.99

Scorching HOT:
(Dec 26-28) $99.99 - $40 Instant Rebate - $25.00 mail-in rebate = $34.99

Blistering HOT:
So, for those of you that bought this same memory last week at Best Buy with the $30.00 mail-in rebate (Dec 8-14th), there will be an additional $11.00 and tax in it for you since the "after instant rebate - before mail-in rebate" price will be $59.99.... versus $69.99 last week....
After pricematch = $28.99 and tax on $59.99....

Those that buy Sunday/Monday/Tuesday will be eligible for a $5.50 and tax pricematch since the "after instant rebate - before mail-in rebate" price will be $59.99.... versus $64.99 earlier in the week (ie. pre-Christmas versus post-Christmas)....
After pricematch = $33.49 and tax on $59.99....

I guess a 110-percent pricematch is in order for those that bought Crucial memory in the last two (2) weeks!!!!

Why do these idiots keep shooting themselves in the foot like this - not once, but twice IN THE SAME WEEK????

Well, I can only say one thing....

May the stupidity continue ! ! ! !

  • HEY MODS -we need an emoticon that looks like a smiley-face kneeling-over, lowering their hands in a gregorian chant
    (ie. "bowing to the Gods"), for posts like this where it might be deemed "appropriate".

    So, Any chance????
NOTE: - if you intend on doing this pricematch, *DO NOT* waste your Best Buy 10-percent off magazine coupons, as they are one-time use coupons and *CANNOT* be "re-used" - not even when pricematching a prior receipt (read the terms and conditions). Once the coupon is used, it's used - not to mention that the pricematch negates the coupon unless it is applied after the pricematch - and then the store can technically refuse to do that. IF you use the $10 Gift Card coupon and already received the Best Buy gift card - you might be able to apply the gift card to the pricematch total, provided the manager/CSR doesn't put two-and-two together and figure-out that the gift you want to use, is the one you "earned" on the original receipt.

And like that's going to happen at Best Buy . . . .

My follow-up to above

The 10-percent off coupon is a one-time use coupon. It should only be used when:

  • 1. The cost of the magazine does not exceed the discount received;

    2. There is absolutely no chance of doing a return and/or pricematch;

    3. In conjunction with a pricematch, when the net after pricematch-before coupon cost does not violate #1.
In order for the 10-percent-off coupon to "be effective", the item purchase needs to equal or exceed $100.00 plus any difference in the cost of the magazine x ten (10). "Spin " currently has the $10 Gift Card coupon, and $3.50 newsstand cost. In order to equal a savings of the $10.00 Gift Card coupon, you would need to spend at least $100.00 to $134.90 depending on the cost of the magazine ($134.90 x .10 = $13.49 for "PC World "). So to use the 10-percent coupon in this case makes little, if any sense, as your net savings actually amounts to a loss of $0.99 (excluding sales tax), when you factor in the cost of the magazine alone.

Now let's look at the following scenario - using the 10-percent off coupon before pricematching:

Item "A" and item "B" both cost $100 - you only have one coupon, so you elect to use the coupon on item "B"
  • Item A:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $ -55.00 (pricematch $100 to $50.00)
    $*45.00 net cost excluding tax

    Item B:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $-10.00 (10-percent coupon)
    $-44.00 (pricematch $90 to $50.00)
    $*46.00 net cost excluding tax
So by pricematching AFTER using the coupon, you actually receive less on the pricematch, as well as lossing the full value of the coupon. Based upon the $6.99 newsstand cost for "PC World ", using the coupon "cost" you $7.99 and tax, plus any other costs associated in "acquiring" the coupon.

Now let's look at the following scenario - using the 10-percent off coupon in conjunction with pricematching:

Item "A" and item "B" both cost $100 - you only have one coupon, so you elect to use the coupon on item "B"

  • Item A:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $ -55.00 (pricematch $100 to $50.00)
    $*45.00 net cost excluding tax

    Item B:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $ -55.00 (pricematch $100 to $50.00)
    $*- 4.50 (10-percent coupon)
    $*40.50 net cost excluding tax
So by pricematching BEFORE using the coupon, you again actually receive less than you would using the $10 Gift Card coupon, as well as the difference in the newsstand cost of the two magazines, based upon the $6.99 newsstand cost for "PC World ". Thus, using the coupon "cost" you $3.49 and tax on $7.99, plus any other costs associated in "acquiring" the coupon. So in using the 10-percent coupon in conjunction with a pricematch, your after-pricematch cost would have to be at least $100.00 for the coupon to yield the return the $10 Gift Card will yield.

Now let's look at the same scenario using the $10 Gift Card coupon before pricematching:

Item "A" and item "B" both cost $100 - you only have one coupon, so you elect to use the coupon on item "A" this time:
  • Item A:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $ * 0.00 (FREE $10 Gift Card for qualified purchases of $50 or more)
    $ -55.00 (pricematch to $50.00)
    $*45.00 net cost excluding tax plus a $10 gift card (actual net cost $35.00 plus tax)

    Item B:
    $100.00 (initial cost)
    $ * 0.00 (no coupon)
    $-45.00 (pricematch to $50.00)
    $*45.00 net cost excluding tax plus an unused $10 Gift Card coupon

So by pricematching AFTER using the $10 Gift Card coupon results in no loss, and in return you now have an additional $10 gift card to spend later. So the coupon retained its full value regardless whether you do a pricematch or not. Based upon the $3.50 newsstand cost for "Spin ", "using" the coupon "cost" you $3.50 and tax. So the worse you can do, is to save $1.50 (excluding tax) - providing you didn't spend more than that in gas, chasing down a copy of the magazine.

Wasn't meant to, but if you don't explain yourself here, someone jumps down your throat telling you you don't know what the hell you're talking about....

Okay, you can boil the dissertation down to three (3) basic rules:

  • 1. Use the $10 Gift Card coupon if the item is $100.00 or less;

    2. Use the $10 Gift Card coupon if you have reason to suspect there will be a pricematch involved;

    3. Use the 10-percent coupon in conjunction with a pricematch when the after pricematch cost will be in excess of $100.00
How's that????

Now to round-up my posts on the magazines, costs, and the coupon(s) terms and conditions....

The Best Buy 10-percent-off and $10 Gift Card coupons have been reported on both forums (see threads below), in several magazines, as listed below.

And I am happy to report that the 10-percent coupon worked quite well - I first used one in mid-November and have since used it "several" times

The $10 Gift Card coupon would not ring-up properly (kept charging me $10.00 for the gift card), and a manager had to eventually manually override the price on one item.

When you're checking-out, pay attention to what "rings-up" on the register - it will show on their register screen as "Holiday Package ". While the coupon is coded into their computer system and will show on your receipt as "Holiday Magazine Coupon" - if the CSR doesn't know what they're doing, the coupon will come-up as a $10.00 off coupon - not 10-percent off. But then again, if the item is less than $100 - $10.00 off is better - so pray for incompetence if this is the only coupon you have!

So, I guess the real 10-percent-off question is, which magazine is cheaper????

Anyone see any other magazines with this coupon? The publisher responsible for "Maxim" and "Blender" publishes at least two (2) more magazines, Stuff (your basic soft-porn magazine, sealed at the newsstands) and The Weekly (a US News & World Report kind of periodical - not a snowball's chance in hell). I'm not sure 'who' publishes Rolling Stones, and it's likely "the" coupons are probably present in other magazines we've simply missed.

I hope this doesn't come off as stupid but I'm still confused as to where the "Best Buy $10 Gift Card Coupon" is coming from. As in, there is reference to a "$10 off $50 gift card" coupon in Spin magazine. How do I get the "Best Buy $10 Gift Card Coupon"? Or is this supossed to automatically ring up at the register when I buy the RAM?

Ah, I think the wording confused me, I thought the Spin coupon was $10 off the purchase of a $50 gift card. Not a free $10 gift card with the purchase of $50 or more stuff.

I'm a little confused, BestBuy will pricematch their own reduced price?

I went on their website and this is what it reads:

"If, within 30 days (14 days for computers, monitors, printers and notebooks, camcorders, digital cameras and radar detectors) of your purchase from Best Buy, you find a local competitor offering a lower price on an available product of the same brand and model, we'll refund the difference plus another 10% of the difference. Bring us verification of the lower price, plus your original Best Buy receipt to claim your refund. Does not apply to BestBuy.com pricing, special, bonus or free offers, and in California cellular phones and pagers."

I'm not sure, but that sounds like they won't pricematch a price from their own store. Can somebody explain this to me. Because if it is the case, as described above, every time they reduce the cost of their products, they are liable to having to pay an additional 10% of the reduced price difference, and that would s*ck for them.

From what I understand, BB will pricematch only to the exact price, i.e. if you bought it for $50 one week, and it droped to $40 the next week, they will pricematch it to $40, but no more.
