If memory serves correctly, Fry's ads are generally full page ads in one of the sections of the local paper. They are not inserts, but more like page 7 of the sports section in the trib kind of thing.

Just got home from Chicago and my visit to the Fry's store - IT IS HUGE and stocked to the gills with anything you can imagine. Even my 15-year old son was impressed!!

No deals yet but with Grand Opening around, the one assistance SM suggested that I look at the biggest stacks of stuff to buy now and PM later (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Can you say good bye COMPUSA in that area....?

PS Tried to get them to PM their own sale from San Jose and no-go but it was fun trying!

One clerk said yes. Then the checkout man couldn't speak Engrish. The next woman was Canadian and kept saying that "this is Chicago, the Ad is San Jose - Eh!" Never talked to the store manager, as he was sequestered in the Command Center like FarScape. I have never seen such a huge store before. You just have to see it to believe it!

By the way, it's not 200,000 square feet, it's actually 180,000.

Fry's going to have one hell of a grand opening; with Randy Fry and everyone else coming up. Many of the employees came from Texas stores, and are a pleasure to work with. hehe

But remember that many are also new hires, like I was, and prior to the soft opening, we've had no real experience with working with the public yet. Just constant Remedy training. And stocking the store was a bitch and a half, requiring several 17-hour workdays...

Anyway, I'll stop ranting here.

While it's cool to have a Fry's in Chicago - it's not really in Chicago! It's out there in the burbs. It's quite a trek ot head there from downtown. What would be ideal is some place central like North/Clybourn. Then again - someone posted about when Fry's would come Michigan. I know lots of folks who head to Chicago just to go to Ikea. Why not head to Chicago for Fry's too?

There are plans to get at least 4 more Fry's in the Chicagoland area in the not too distant future. I am assuming one will be in Chicago-proper; that's where I live anyway.

Any word on WHERE they will be? One in the northern burbs would be great. Something like the Evanston to Northbrook area would be perfect!

My primary interest now is when will the Grand Opening be (verified) and a link to the items that will be offered at that sale. I have heard July 1-2 but nothing confirmed.

Those that get the Tribune early enough, please share what you find with those who do not live in the immediate Downers Grove area...

Thank you!

The DSL reports thread showed an ad from the sun times. The Grand Opening is Friday, but didn't say much else except the three big drawing prizes (Car, Trip and something else). No specific deals listed in the ad.

Hopefully something will be in the Thursday paper...

If you've walked through the store already, there aren't many things on sale. .... but if you go past the MACs, the G5s are marked $500 cheaper than anywhere I've seen. This could be the hot news if I could afford $2500.

Here's the picture, blown up 3x, but it's hard to read some of the stuff. The Grand Opening is Friday and the car up for grabs is a Cadillac Escalade.

That is just plain weird! I clicked on it last night and it worked fine....today is another story.

However, if you cut and paste the link I found (not mine) above, you do get to the original and not redirected to www.pbs.org (spit!).

Here is the link again if the above starts to fail also: http://www.broadbandreports.com/r0/download/621160.thumb~7d79ed7b037f11b155d8d1ba3feef7ae/Frys.jpg

Hope all works out well and look forward to reading more about tomorrow's opening.

Your "link again" doesn't work, it just comes up Barney. That site does not allow hotlinking.

Go to pics.bbzzdd.com and open a free account, then upload your pic and link from there.

Its not my pic, its a link to the Broadband web site that has a major thread on Chicago and Fry's. I just happened upon it last night and shared it here. Sorry.

I guess we are still several hours away from anyone having a newspaper with the Ad's in it for Fry's...

PS Look forward to seeing some from here and at FW. I will be the ole fart wearing a black hat that says on the front, "Got Crabs?" I bought it at Joe's Crab Shack.

Ok, just bought luggage w/ wheels for $20 at Walgreens, and will be there ~7:30.. any lines yet?
Weather: Today Partly Cloudy 83°/64° No Chance of Rain

Do most people have cars? Anyone willing to ferry fellow ATers+swag back to Chicago (for a price of course)?
By the time I got out of fry's, Pace stopped running after 6 and I hiked 2 miles south on side of expressway. (not for timid hearted)

Also here are taxi #s
A Champs Taxi 630-824-0800
Courtesy Taxi 630-968-1323

If you live near blue line, this may be the bus for you, 15-45 minute.

Nah... no hot combos. You might have saved 30-40 bucks, but it's not worth it IMO. The P4/Mobo conbo turned out to be i848+Prescott, which is not hot.

Anyway, I just went there during my lunch break and the parking lot was almost full. Parkingwise it was a good thing to open on friday, otherwise there wouldn't have been enough parking place. By the time I got out - about 12:00, people actually had to look for the place to park. The P4/mobo combo like I said above was ECS i848 chipset and CPU is retail Prescott - not that hot. I was kind of hoping for i865 with Northwood, but the miracle didn't happen. They did have the whole 54G wireless lineup from NETGEAR for free after rebate though - and I mean the whole lineup - everything. Wireless router 54G, 54G PMCIA cards for laptops, 54G internal PCI cards, 54G USB2.0 wireless point... That was awesome. I also picked up external USB enclosure for FAR. I wasn't particularly impressed by other prices, but $250-300 worth of goods for free is still great. And of course they had Cadillac Escalade give-away. I asked the associate and she said they'll be drawing monday. Overall, the best grand opening I've seen. Way to go Frys...

Also they had 6800GT in stock, I don't remember which brand though... If it turns out PNY you could try PMing it to CompUSA who has 30% on all PNY cards including 6800 but OOS right now.

How much was that combo?

I saw the LA Times Fry's ad - did they have that CPU/Motherboard combo for the AMD chip? I'd love to snag one of those if they did...
